To the Lighthouse $21.66 Used – Virginia Woolf’s best-known novel has often been thought of as symbolic and difficult. This book surveys the critical work done on it and argues that assumptions about Woolf’s modernist intentions have obscured other aspects of the text. It goes on to suggest that a more fertile way of interpreting the text is to regard it as a meditation on the experience of women and especially the problems of motherhood in the light of psycho-analytic theory. |

Work, Female Empowerment and Economic Development $160 Accumulation of assets to enable the diversification of activities has been established as crucial in helping the rural poor escape poverty. The empowerment of women has been identified as a way to overcome inefficiencies in the allocation of resources within the family and so improve agrarian households’ productivity. However, achieving diversification is not necessarily empowering for women and some initiatives may worsen their position. This book uses the information collected in original household surveys conducted in rural areas in four countries to investigate the links between women’s position in the household, diversification strategies, labour market participation and poverty reduction. The book centres on country-specific chapters that provide an in-depth focus on an issue of relevance to the location and that tease out the interplay between female empowerment and development in that context. In particular, the chapters examine:Landlessness in EthiopiaFeminization of the agricultural labour market in Andhra Pradesh, IndiaFemale labour supply and women’s power within the household in UgandaDisadvantages faced by female-headed households in ZimbabweThe analysis calls for caution in assuming that labour market expansion necessarily acts to empower women and emphasizes the role female access to assets can have in facilitating diversification and escaping poverty. It will appeal to all those studying development economics, with particular interest in areas such as diversification, poverty and female empowerment. |

”From every shires ende”: Chaucer and forms of nationhood. $49.99 Despite Geoffrey Chaucer’s longstanding reputation as the English nation’s first writer, his relation to the problem of nationhood has just begun to receive extensive critical attention. This dissertation clarifies the nature of Chaucer’s national imagination by drawing on recent developments in postcolonial critique, in particular the work of Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri. It argues that Chaucer’s concept of nationhood relies on his engagement with internationalism. It argues further that Chaucer finds the first possibilities for the concept in vernacular language and popular access to British history. The latter characteristically involves anachronism, a tool which, paradoxically, Chaucer uses to reshape the two fundamental components of his national ideals: sovereignty and domesticity. Chaucerian nationhood predates modern nationalism, but they cannot be divorced. The dissertation argues that nationhood can be better understood by comparing historically disparate forms.;The first chapter surveys nationhood’s place in Chaucer’s reception history. Chapter two considers his relation to thinkers like Dante, Marsilius of Padua and Nicole Oresme, and fourteenth-century politics. Chapter three argues that by imagining England as a national homeland in the Canterbury Tales’ General Prologue and frame narrative, Chaucer uses nationhood to understand why people participate in political community even when its costs outweigh its benefits. Chapter four exposes tensions between the Knight’s Tale’s imperial and national ambitions. Chapter five presents the Man of Law’s Tale and the Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale as complementary facets of the Matter of Britain. In its reading of the Man of Law’s Tale, English national sovereignty depends on anachronistic misreadings of Islam. Chapter five then argues that the Wife of Bath amends the Man of Law’s conception of sovereignty, rendering it a cross-class, cross-gender affair that extends expectations of love and continuity |

The books of 1 and 2 Chronicles bring a divine word of healing and reaffirm the hope of restoration to a nation that needed to regain its footing in God’s promises and to reshape its life before God.The Chronicler expounds the Bible as he knows it, skillfully weaving his commentary into the linear text of Israel’s history. His theme is straightforward–the promises of God revealed in the Davidic covenant are as trustworthy and as effective as the God who first uttered them.In two volumes Martin Selman provides an excellent interpretation of these sorely neglected yet profound books of the Old Testament. The first volume on 1 Chronicles provides a full introduction that surveys the Chronicler’s method, summarizes major theological themes and serves as a valuable entrée into the heart of the work we now know as 1 & 2 Chronicles. The original, unrevised text of this volume has been completely retypeset and printed in a larger, more attractive format with the new cover design for the series. |

4 Elements For Reducing Stress In The Workplace-Vol. 7b $19.95 Talent management is a critical strategy for the future hopes for many organizations’ competitive advantage. Surveys keep warning about the looming talent shortage and how challenging it is today to not only find but to keep good people. One element that is critical in any strategic approach to talent management is understanding and recognizing the kinds of stresses that are operating throughout an organization (e.g., ineffective management, toxic workplaces, and rusted or burned out employees). Organizations continue to see rising costs in disability management, increased sick time, and greater numbers of employees applying for short-term psychological stress leave. With these rising costs organizations are taking on added financial burden that provides no direct value to profitability.Talent management programs must consider what is within an organization’s control to mitigate stress. The cost of doing nothing is growing in epidemic proportions for many organizations but fortunately many are making a much more concerted effort to facilitate and promote employee health and healthy work conditions. 4 Elements for Reducing Workplace Stress is Volume 7b of the Howatt HR Consulting Talent Management Series that has been developed to promote strategic talent management considerations.Volume 7b Introduces four elements that will help an organization facilitate discussions on the current level of stress within its workforce and the risks and strategies for assisting employees to manage their current stress levels. Each of the four sections has been developed to assist human resource and business leaders to discuss what their organization is doing well to reduce organizational andindividual stress and what opportunities are available to make the work environment better. A core pillar for effective talent management is to retain a healthy and productive workforce.William A. Howatt, PhD, EdD, Post Doc Behavioral Science UCLA School of Medicine, is CEO of Howatt HR |

A Bibliographic Guide to the History of Computing, Computers, and the Information Processing Industry $166.67 As millions of people have been exposed to computing through the tremendous growth of microcomputers, there has developed an increasing appreciation of the history of data processing, which dates back many decades before the arrival of the computer. Stretching back to at least the 1860s, such early technologies as adding machines, punch cards, and the office appliance industry are now being recognized for their place in the history of the information processing industry. This work brings together a comprehensive list of sources that offer a general introduction to the literature of the industry. Divided into nine chapters covering topics and historical periods, the bibliography provides an annotated list of published materials describing both the history of the industry and significant items of general interest. Each chapter is introduced with a short review of historically important issues and comments on the literature, and contains contemporary publications as well as more recent material. To give the work a continuing usefulness, ongoing publications, such as computer magazines, are highlighted. Entries are grouped under nearly 100 subheadings, covering such material as contemporary descriptions of hardware and software of the past, seminal technical papers, industry surveys, programming languages, significant individuals and companies, and the role of Japan and microcomputing. All citations are annotated with a brief summary of either the work’s contents or its historical importance, while two indexes provide both subject references and author citations. As you unclothe yourself, reflect that so must your soul at last, unclothed of its vesture of flesh, stand before God; pray that it may be with joy, and not with grief. Let your last words be — Into Thy hands I commend my spirit, for Thou hast redeemed me, O Lord Thou God of truth. MORNING HYMNS. I. Now that the daylight fills the sky, We lift our hearts to God on high, That He, in all we do or say, Would keep us free from harm to-day. May He restrain our tongues from strife, And shield from anger’s din our life ; And guard with watchful care our eyes From earth’s absorbing vanities. O may our inmost hearts be pure, From thoughts of folly kept secure, And pride of sinful flesh subdued Through sparing use of daily food. So we, when this day’s work is o’er, And shades of night return once more, Our path of trial safely trod, Shall give the glory to our God. All praise to God the Father be; All praise, Eternal Son, to Thee; Whom, with the Spirit, we adore For ever and for evermore. Amen. Awake, my soul, and with the sun Thy daily stage of duty run; Shake off dull sloth, and early rise To pay thy morning sacrifice. Redeem thy mis-spent time that’s past, And live this day as if thy last: Improve thy talent with due care, For the great day thyself prepare. Let all thy converse be sincere, Thy conscience as the noon-day clear ; Think how all-seeing God thy ways And all thy secret thoughts surveys. Wake and lift up thyself, my heart, And with the Angels bear thy part, Who all night long u… |

A Commentary on Jeremiah $38 This widely praised expository commentary by Walter Brueggemann – one of the premier Old Testament scholars of our time – explores the historical and social milieu of Jeremiah and offers a theological interpretation of this central book of the Old Testament. In contrast to current approaches to Jeremiah, Brueggemann uses a combination of sociological and literary analysis to provide a fresh look at the critical theological issues in the Jeremiah tradition – a look that ultimately yields compelling insights into the message and significance of Jeremiah both for this tumultuous period in the history of ancient Israel and for our own complicated times. This combined edition of Brueggemann’s original two-volume work, published until recently as part of the International Theological Commentary series, will continue to be an essential resource for pastors, students, and general readers. It is reprinted here with an important new preface by Brueggemann that surveys the current state of Jeremiah studies. |

A History Of Economic Theory $42 A History of Economic Theory offers a comprehensive account of the builders and building blocks of modern mainstream economics. Jurg Niehans shows how the analytical tools used by economists have evolved from the eighteenth century to the present. Niehans first surveys the development of classical economics from the scholastic and mercantilist traditions to Marx. He then follows the progress of marginalist economics from Thunen to Fischer. In the book’s final section, he describes economic theory in the model-building era from Pigou and Keynes to Rational Expectations.Building his story around the economists themselves, Niehans presents a pantheon of economic theory. It includes the famous from Smith and Riccardo to Samuelson and Friedman, as well as detailed discussions of lesser-known figures who have nevertheless made classic contributions. For each theorist Niehans offers a biographical sketch followed by a description, interpretation, and critical assessment of his work. With the current revival of interest in the history of economics, economists will find A History of Economic Theory not only a rich source of information but also a challenging analysis of the dynamics of scientific progress. |

A History Of Rome Under The Emperors $44.95 This book caused a sensation when it was published in Germany in 1992, and was front page news in many newspapers. For readers of English, it will be an authoritative survey of four centuries of Roman history, and a unique window on the German tradition of the last century.Theodor Mommsen (d. 1903) was one of the greatest Roman historians of the nineteenth century, and the only one ever to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. But the work that would have concluded his history of Rome – which ran to the reign of Augustus – was never completed. This book represents that great lost work.In 1980 Alexander Demandt discovered in an antiquarian bookshop a full and detailed handwritten transcript of the lectures on the Roman Empire, which Mommsen gave for many years from 1863 to 1886, made by two of his students. This transcript has been edited to provide the authoritative reconstruction of the book Mommsen never wrote, A History of Rome Under the Emperors.Barbara and Alexander Demandt have carefully edited the text and provided detailed annotation and explanatory references. A History of Islamic Spain $24.22 The period of Muslim occupation in Spain represents the only significant contact Islam and Europe was ever to have on European soil. In this important as well as fascinating study, Watt traces Islam’s influence upon Spain and European civilization–from the collapse of the Visigoths in the eighth century to the fall of Granada in the fifteenth, and considers Spain’s importance as a part of the Islamic empire. Particular attention is given to the golden period of economic and political stability achieved under the Umayyads. Without losing themselves in detail and without sacrificing complexity, the authors discuss the political, social, and economic continuity in Islamic Spain, or al-Andalus, in light of its cultural and intellectual effects upon the rest of Europe. Medieval Christianity, Watt points out, found models of scholarship in the Islamic philosophers and adapted the idea of holy war to its own purposes while the final reunification of Spain under the aegis of the Reconquista played a significant role in bringing Europe out of the Middle Ages. A survey essential to anyone seeking a more complete knowledge of European or Islamic history, the volume also includes sections on literature and philology by Pierre Cachia. This series of Islamic surveys is designed to give the educated reader something more than can be found in the usual popular books. Each work undertakes to survey a special part of the field, and to show the present stage of scholarship here. Where there is a clear picture this will be given; but where there are gaps, obscurities and differences of opinion, these will also be indicated. Full and annotated bibliographies will afford guidance to those who want topursue their studies further. There will also be some account of the nature and extent of the source material. The series is addressed in the first place to the educated reader, with little or no previous knowledge of the subject; its character is such that it should be of value also to un |
