Jim Leyritz Autographed New York Yankees 8×10 Photo from his Big Home Run in the 1996 World Series $39.99 The best known of Jim Leyritz’s playoff heroics occurred in Game 4 of the 1996 World Series against the Atlanta Braves at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. The Yankees had lost the first two games of the series at home- and narrowly won Game 3 in Atlanta. Game 4 appeared to be going to the Braves- who led 6-0 after 5 innings. The Yankees rallied for 3 runs in the 6th- setting the stage for Leyritz in the 8th inning. Leyritz stepped up with one out and two men on base and hit a three-run home run to left field to tie the game and cap the improbable Yankee comeback. The home run was hit against Atlanta closer Mark Wohlers and the Yankees eventually won the game 8–6 in 10 innings. Leyritz’s Game 4 home run remains the most recognizable moment of that series and of his career. This baseball is signed by Jim Leyritz. This item comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and matching holograms from Athletic Promotional Events- Inc. This Certificate of Authenticity contains the date and location that this item was autographed.A Wonderful Autographed piece to add to any collection. |

”Genius Loci-Spirit of Place” for orchestra. $49.99 Genius Loci, from the Latin “spirit of place,” refers to the unique atmosphere of a place. Composers, writers and artists throughout history have been inspired by place. Genius Loci—Spirit of Place is my own exploration of the meaning of “place.” The piece is not a representation of place but instead represents the distinctive residue of a place that inspires expression.;The spirit of place is in itself organic to music, a time-based art. It is the essence, the residue, of the opening that emanates throughout a composition as “place,” or as a marker, for the composer and listener alike. In music of the classical period this sense of initial place is often referred to as home, as in the home key, and one of the period’s preeminent formal designs is the journey away from that opening place and an eventual return home.;Similarly, Genius Loci-Spirit of Place, emanates from its opening gesture. “Place” here is in the intervallic pitch-relationship of D♭–C–B♭, the music’s distinctive register, its bell-like character, as well as the repeated octave that creates an open harmonic sound world full of possibilities. What follows grows organically out of the spirit of that place and informs the remainder of the work. The opening gesture, for example, leads to the structural and registral climax of Genius Loci—Spirit of Place in measure 93. The descending pitches C-B-A (transposed from the opening), via a sequential progression toward the low register, initiate this climax in a slow build-up that starts in measure 76. This moment also coincides with a rhythmic and metric ‘coming-together’ of the beat. A return to the opening harmony, at the point of release of tension from the climax in measure 99, restores a sense of place. This homecoming is further emphasized by the return of the octave in its distinctive opening register. The spirit of place is the underlying current that flows throughout the entire composition. |

”Opium pushing and Bible smuggling”: Religion and the cultural politics of British imperialist ambition in China. $49.99 In the early decades of the nineteenth century, British missionaries disrupted the century-old tea-trade triangle by their insistence on penetrating the closed Chinese empire. Their cultural knowledge made these missionaries attractive potential allies for merchants while also giving accounts of their mission a literary appeal. Although missionary writing was intended for specifically Evangelical audiences, the influence of these works extended to popular culture and into the crafting of foreign policy for the Opium War as the political situation in China intensified due to opium trafficking.;The first chapter traces the scholarly traditions on mission and imperialism, and the missionary movement in China. It also shows that two differing perspectives on mission and empire derive from competing subcultures in early-nineteenth-century Britain: middle-class popular culture and the growing Evangelical subculture. The second chapter adapts the notions of “imagined communities” and an “imperial archive” for considering ways in which Evangelicals created literature—an “Evangelical Archive”—that formulated and maintained their conceptual unity both at home and with their missionaries and converts abroad. Aimed Benjamin Fischer at recruiting missionaries, encouraging believers, providing ethnology, and garnering support, mission narratives first emerged from the difficult mission context of China. The third chapter contrasts Evangelical representations of China with those by Thomas DeQuincey, Jesuit missionaries, and travel writers. Encoding spiritual terms for both spiritual and material subjects of attention, mission narratives assisted in coloring China as dark and depraved in opposition to Christianity’s enlightening brightness. The fourth chapter examines the work of Charles Gutzlaff, Journal of Three Voyages, and demonstrates a shift in the Evangelical approach to both British culture and foreign peoples, and thus a refiguring of the relationship between mission |

‘A severe and thankless task’: Managing the middle classes in nineteenth-century U.S. domestic fiction. $49.99 At its core, this study expands the socio-cultural work of literary in examining intra-class tensions during the Gilded Age, while also adding to the current work on women writers, domestic fiction, food studies, and feminist literary criticism. The domestic and household fiction of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Catherine Owen, Frances E.W. Harper, and Maria Amparo Ruiz de Burton resist the prevailing critical assumption that the "middle class" had a unified identity. Instead these texts depict middle classes riddled by profound insecurities. Due to these intra-class tensions, I do not use the term middle class and instead favor the more accurate description of middle classes. These tensions are particularly evident when the authors negotiate issues of social consequence, such as mistress-servant labor relations and evolving conceptions of ethnicity and race, but also when they write about daily events, such as cooking meals, performing the duties of a hostess and housewife, and serving tea in the parlor. These texts additionally disclose how much the middle classes depend on women’s unremunerated work within the home, community, and nation in forms ranging from mothering, to policing of appropriate class behavior, to assimilating an immigrant servant workforce in US customs. These concerns illustrate an intense authorial, editorial, and readerly engagement with the social and political climate of the day, while also offering readers a way to negotiate social change and to politicize their domestic knowledge. The works I discuss include Stowe’s House and Home Papers (1865), Pink and White Tyranny (1871), My Wife and I (1872), and We and Our Neighbors (1875); Owen’s Ten Dollars Enough (1887), Molly Bishop’s Family (1888), and Gentle Breadwinners (1888); Harper’s Sowing and Reaping (1876-77), Trial and Triumph (1888-89), and Iola Leroy (1892); and Ruiz de Burton’s Who Would Have Thought It? (1872), and The Squatter and the Don (1885). |

‘Work Hard, Study…and Keep Out of Politics!’: Adventures and Lessons from an Unexpected Public Life $19.99 White House chief of staff twice over, former secretary of state, past secretary of the treasury, and campaign leader for three different candidates in five successful campaigns—few people have lived and breathed politics as deeply or for as long as James Baker. Now, with candor, down-home Texas storytelling, and more than a few surprises, Baker opens up about his thirty-five years behind the scenes. Beginning in 1975 with the Ford administration, in a job procured for him by friend and tennis partner George H. W. Bush, Baker was in the thick of American politics. He recounts the inside story of Ford’s rejection of Reagan as a running mate in 1976 with the same insight he has into Reagan’s rejection of Ford four years later. When the White House was plunged into turmoil after the Reagan assassination attempt, he was there, and his stories take readers deeper into those chaotic days. Baker was on hand for the George H. W. Bush campaign’s battle over running mate Dan Quayle and, more recently, he was again on the front row as George W. Bush fought it out in Florida. Spellbinding and frank, his stories are the ones between the lines of our history books. In this new edition, Baker also responds for the first time in print to the George W. Bush administration’s reaction to the Iraq Study Group Report, written with his input. Baker is very qualified to comment on the political operation of the current administration, and his new writing for this paperback brings the full weight of his experience to bear. |

(Why Don’t You Take) The Other Side? $13.99 Given that he’s got an extensive background as a pianist in Germany’s rich jazz scene — having made a home in Munich after moving from his native Milan — Robert Di Gioia’s work as the virtually one-man-band behind (Why Don’t You Take) The Other Side? comes as something of a surprise. No doubt he’s had to gradually ease out of some of the most defining traits of his original craft throughout his tenure as Marsmobil; though it began as an amalgam of lounge jazz and electronica in 1999, it fully culminates here with a far-removed, fascinatingly wide-ranging set sporting an abundance of tributaries. This is a tour de force of immaculately mind-bending pastoral pop, with an arsenal of instruments at play and only one finger on the trigger. Early album highlight and single “Crazy Colored Lights” utilizes a neat little tactic of segmenting the words of the title in a fleeting vocal harmony, and cycling them repeatedly as an isolated sonic tidbit floating over the rest — the perfect sonic equivalent of a kaleidoscopic image that does much to set the stage for what follows. One of the album’s two guests also shows up on this track in the form of a spoken word interlude by an entity known as the Illusionists, a strangely riveting out-of-left-field segment on a song that has already done much to ingratiate itself. You could swear that Mark Everett of Eels makes an appearance on the equally strong “Moon of Dust,” but as it turns out the song is intended merely as an “homage to Eels,” and is actually that much more impressive for it. At 16 tracks it would be tempting to assume there’d be some filler here, but this masterwork simply unfolds with nary a dull or derivative moment. Pianos and keyboard-driven sounds are the most consistently featured sonic implement, but in many cases they are used to lay the groundwork or simply twinkle at the higher end of the spectrum while other instruments take the spotlight. Such is the case with the deftly executed “Lolly,” which… |

100 Years of Brooklands: The Birthplace of British Motorsport & Aviation. A Photographic History $36.03 Conceived and designed by Peter Campbell working in conjunction with top advertising photographer Ron Bambridge and the Brooklands Museum, this profusely illustrated book celebrates the centenary of the world’s first custom-built motor racing circuit and home of British aviation. In the pioneering days of driving, competitive racing was banned on public roads in the United Kingdom. British automobile manufacturers could only watch as their European counterparts such as Fiat, Renault, and Peugeot gained valuable publicity from city-to-city races held around the continent, despite the inherent dangers. To create a base for UK motor sport, Hugh Fortescue Locke-King designed a circuit where cars could race in comparative safety. In 1906 he set to work to build a huge concrete banked oval bowl, 100 feet wide and more than two miles long, on land he owned in Surrey. This formidable engineering project was completed within 18 months and in 1907, Brooklands held its first race. It remained in constant use until 1939 and the cars and drivers who competed there have passed into legend. Huge, powerful cars from companies such as Duesenberg, Railton, Lorraine-Dietrich, and Bentley, and smaller cars from MG and Morgan, all took part in long distance races and record breaking. Pioneer drivers such as Malcolm Campbell, Raymond Mays, and J. G. Parry-Thomas competed against fearless lady racers like Doreen Evans and Kay Petrie. It was John Cobb at the wheel of his mighty Napier Railton that established the ultimate circuit record of 143.33mph. The reputation of many motorcycle companies like Norton, Ariel, Zenith, and Douglas were established due to their exploits at Brooklands. Within the groundsof the concrete circuit, hangars were built alongside a small runway. From these buildings pioneer aviators Alliott Verdon-Roe, Tommy Sopwith, and Harry Hawker founded the British aviation industry. It became the home of the Vickers aircraft company and during WWII, numerous aircraft |

101 ProFUNdities $7.17 What in the world is a “proFUNdity”? Well, it’s a sentence or two that describes everyday situations (like misplacing your glasses or laughing at the wrong time) in a tongue-in-cheek “profound” style. Everybody experiences frustrating moments at home or work, while shopping or driving, or when dealing with others. In retrospect, though, those moments often make for amusing stories to share with friends. As you will see from the illustrations and the Table of Contents, 101 ProFUNdities emphasizes the humorous aspects of life, even while sounding like it might have been written by a career bureaucrat (it was). Success in understanding and personally relating to a proFUNdity and its plainspoken title/subtitle is where the FUN comes in.101 ProFUNdities will “capture the fancy” of word-loving adults who have a sense of humor, have “been there and done that”, and who enjoy wholesome books that require a little thought. Puzzled by “Purposeful Jerk” (#44) or “Cerebral Perversity” (#73)? Don’t worry; there’s a “Cheat Sheet” in the back that explains everything. Open to any page and enjoy reading for a minute, ten minutes, or an hour. |

112 Mercer Street: Einstein, Russell, Godel, Pauli, and the End of Innocence in Science $0.99 As World War II wound down and it became increasingly clear that the Allies would emerge victorious, Albert Einstein invited three close friends-all titans of contemporary science and philosophy-to his home at 112 Mercer Street in Princeton, New Jersey, to discuss what they loved best, science and philosophy, and perhaps to ponder their vision of the postwar world. His guests were the legendary philosopher and pacifist Bertrand Russell; the boy wonder of quantum physics Wolfgang Pauli; and the brilliant logician Kurt Gödel, whose “incompleteness” theorems a decade before had shattered the link between logic and mathematics. Their casual meetings took place far from the horrific battlefields of the war and the (then) secret lair of experimental atomic physicists, Los Alamos, New Mexico. Just how many times they met and precisely what they discussed remains a matter of conjecture. All four men were well along in years by scientific standards-where youth tends to dominate with major breakthroughs-and they had to be aware of what Feldman terms “the pathos of science,” that their own work would one day be superseded. As they met, they and their scientific brethren were awakening to the dire consequences of atomic power-as well as the fact that henceforth science and politics were inextricably intertwined. It was, as Feldman notes, the end of innocence in science.Taking these historic meetings as his starting point, Feldman sketches the lives and contributions of the four friends, colleagues, and rivals-especially Einstein, innately self-confident but frustrated in his attempt to come up with a unified theory, and the aristocratic but self-doubting Lord Russell. In a final section, Feldman also discusses the roles of J. Robert Oppenheimer and his German counterpart, Werner Heisenberg. Though neither was present at any of these meetings, they both cast long shadows over 112 Mercer Street during that cold winter of 1943-44. |

We all need a little help every once in a while. Barb Rogers has been sober for a long time. And she knows that doesn’t make a difference — what makes a difference is that she’s clean and sober today. Rogers’ newest book offers true stories from real life people. Their addictions have led them to a 12-step program. Yet, in working the program, they have found, as the saying goes, things are simple but not always easy. The important thing is — no matter what difficulties we have with any of the steps — is to keep working the steps, as many times as it takes. There is no perfection, there is no goal, there is only walking the talk, one day at a time. In 12 Steps That Can Save Your Life, Barb Rogers once again offers down-home sensible advice, along with stories a struggling reader can identify with. 16 Biggest Hits $7.99 16 Biggest Hits does a good job representing the highlights of Bobby Bare’s unwieldy catalog, which ranges from the early ’60s to the early ’80s and includes a stint with RCA Victor (1962-1969), Mercury (1970-1972), a second one with RCA (1973-1977), and then one with Columbia (1978-1983). Most Bare best-ofs round up his RCA hits, especially those from the ’60s. Some even tack on a little of his Columbia work now that the RCA and Columbia vaults both fall under Sony BMG ownership. In rare cases, a best-of will include licensed Mercury recordings. 16 Biggest Hits is one such rarity. Granted, it only includes a token Mercury hit, “That’s How I Got to Memphis,” but one is better than none, especially when it’s such a fine song. And so 16 Biggest Hits represents all eras of Bare’s career. His first RCA stint is well represented with seven inclusions: “500 Miles Away from Home,” “The Streets of Baltimore,” “Detroit City,” “Miller’s Cave,” “Four Strong Winds,” “(Margie’s At) The Lincoln Park Inn,” and “It’s Alright.” The second RCA stint is fairly well represented with five inclusions: Billy Joe Shaver’s “Ride Me Down Easy,” a trio of Shel Silverstein-penned songs from the 1973 live classic Bobby Bare Sings Lullabys, Legends and Lies (“Daddy What If,” “Marie Lavaux,” “The Winner”), and “Dropkick Me, Jesus.” The generally neglected Columbia era is poorly represented, unfortunately, with only a pair of songs from Bare’s second live classic, Down & Dirty (“Tequila Sheila,” “Numbers” — both Silverstein-penned). Some non-live Columbia inclusions would have been nice, even if it were only a single song, if only for the sake of representation. On the other hand, there’s precious little room on this 16-track best-of for a catalog as deep and wide-ranging as Bare’s. Curiously, the compilers tacked “The All American Boy,” Bare’s often-compiled 1958 rarity, onto the end. It’s a fun addition, even if doesn’t fit in, and it only adds to the wondrous… |

16 Lighthouse Road (Cedar Cove Series #1) $9.99 Olivia Lockhart16 Lighthouse RoadCedar Cove, WashingtonDear Reader, You don’t know me yet, but in a few hours that’s going to change. You see, I’m inviting you to my home and my town of Cedar Cove because I want ou to meet my family, friends, and neighbors. Come and hear their stories — maybe even their secrets! I have to admit that my own secrets are pretty open. My marriage failed some years ago, and I have a rather … difficult relationship with my daughter, Justine. Then there’s my mother, Charlotte, who has plenty of opinions and is always willing to share them. Here’s an example: I’m a family court judge and she likes to drop in on my courtroom. Recently I was hearing a divorce petition. In Charlotte’s view, young Cecilia and Ian Randall hadn’t tried hard enough to make their marriage work — and I agreed. So I rendered my judgement: Divorce Denied. Well, you wouldn’t believe the reaction! Thanks to an article by Jack Griffin, the editor of our local paper (and a man I wouldn’t mind seeing more of!), everyone’s talking. Cedar Cove — people love it and sometimes they leave it, but they never forget it! See you soon … Olivia New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber’s day starts long before the sun is up: when her alarm clock rings 4:00 a.m., her home on Washington’s Puget Sound is still shrouded in darkness. Even her husband’s pleas for “just one more snooze, honey” don’t dissuade her from focusing on the day ahead. “I spend so much of my time writing that I hardly have a chance to read,” says the talented author, who has written over 100 books to date. “From four to six in the morning is a precious time for me — I get to immerse myself in someone else’s words!” Readers worldwide clamor for her heartwarming stories of home and hearth, lively romantic adventures, inspirational tales |

Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Female American; or, The Adventures of Unca Eliza Winkfield, is a novel, originally published in 1767, under the pseudonym of the main character/narrator, Unca Eliza Winkfield and edited in recent editions by Michelle Burnham. The novel describes the adventures of a half-Native American, half-English woman, who is shipwrecked on a deserted isle. The protagonist uses her knowledge of Christianity to convert the indigenous inhabitants on the island as part of her survival mode. This work belongs to the literary genre of the Robinsonade, in that – like other works of its era – it emulates Daniel Defoe’s 1719 novel Robinson Crusoe. Although there are many similarities to Defoe’s novel, the differences are what make The Female American distinctive. For instance, the narrator is not only a woman but is also biracial, as the daughter of a Native American princess and an English settler who resided in Virginia. The protagonist is also multilingual. Although Defoe’s protagonist (Robinson Crusoe) chooses to leave his home and set out into an unexplored and dangerous life abroad, Winkfield’s protagonist’s (Unca Eliza Winkfield) trials and adventures are forced upon her. It is only in the latter part of the narrative that the female protagonist finds a living condition on the island that is more favorable than her American or European origins. In addition, the novel engages with the theme of finding one’s home away from the native land, which can be identified in a range of fiction of 18th-century England. |

1833 Works $21.18 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The “Word of Wisdom” is the common name of a section of the Doctrine and Covenants, a book considered by many churches within the Latter Day Saint movement to consist of revelations from God. It is also the name of a health code based on this scripture, practiced most strictly by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), and to a lesser extent, some other Latter Day Saint denominations. In the LDS Church, compliance with the Word of Wisdom is currently a prerequisite for baptism, service in missionary work, attendance at church schools, and entry into the church’s temples; however, violation of the code is not considered to be grounds for excommunication or other disciplinary action. The scripture discourages “hot drinks”, the non-medicinal use of tobacco, the consumption of wine (excluding sacramental wine) or “strong drinks”, and the consumption of meat, except sparing use only in time of winter or famine. The scripture also recommends the consumption of herbs, fruits, and grains, as well as grain-based “mild drinks”. As practiced by the LDS Church, there is no firm restriction relating to meat consumption, but there are additional restrictions against narcotics, and all alcoholic beverages are forbidden, including “mild drinks” such as beer. The LDS Church interprets “hot drinks” to mean coffee and tea (except herbal tea). According to Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, the Word of Wisdom was received in 1833 as a revelation from God. After Smith’s death, Brigham Young stated that the revelation was given in response to problems encountered while conducting meetings in the Smith family home: “When they assembled together in this room after breakfast, the first they did was to light their pi… More: |

Not illustrated. Excerpt: Helen is a novel by Maria Edgeworth (1767-1849). It was written in 1834, late in the author’s life, and was her last work. It is currently unavailable from any major publisher, but may be found in several reprint editions. Helen tells the story of a young orphan, Helen Stanley, whose guardian, Dean Stanley, has squandered his fortune and left Helen without means of support. She is forced to take up residence with the local vicar, whose wife is astonished that none of the Stanleys’ aristocratic friends have offered a refuge to her. Eventually, however, the Davenant family returns from abroad and invite Helen to their daughter’s new home, Clarendon Park. (Cecilia Davenant has just married General Clarendon.) Helen journeys to join her dear friend Cecilia, and the first half of the novel describes Helen’s experiences among the most fortunate of Britain’s elite under the tutelage of Lady Davenant, who in some ways favors Helen over her own daughter Cecilia. In the second and more dramatic half of the novel, Lady Davenant departs with her husband, who has been named ambassador at the Court of St. Petersburg, Russia. Helen is left to the care of General Clarendon and Cecilia. By this time she is engaged to Granville Beauclerc, a young and handsome man who is another of Lady Davenant’s favorites. All does not run smoothly for Helen, however. Before her marriage, Cecilia has carried on an amorous correspondence with Colonel d’Aubigny, a worthless roué who has since died. These letters reappear in a packet addressed to Cecilia’s husband. Cecilia implores Helen to act as if the |

Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is a book that was published in 1861 by Harriet Jacobs, using the pen name “Linda Brent”. While on one level it chronicles the experiences of Harriet Jacobs as a slave, and the various humiliations she had to endure in that unhappy state, it also deals with the particular tortures visited on women at her station. Often in the book, she will point to a particular punishment that a male slave will endure at the hands of slave holders, and comment that, although she finds the punishment brutal in the extreme, it cannot compare to the abuse that a young woman must face while still on the cusp of girlhood. Incidents in the Life of Slave Girl is considered a slave narrative. Portions of it were first published in serial form before being published as a complete work in 1861, after some difficulty finding a publisher. It is also considered an example of feminist literature. Linda Brent- The lead protagonist and a pseudonym for Harriet Jacobs. In the story, Linda at a young age is unaware of her being a slave due to the fact of her parents not telling her and her parents’ masters allowing them to have their own home and raise their family. She faces betrayal and harassment by her many white masters. Linda along the way learns how to defend herself against her masters. Also later on she is torn between her wants of personal freedom and her feeling of personal responsibility to her family, especially her children Benny and Ellen. 1861 Novels (Study Guide): Great Expectations $19.99 Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Great Expectations. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Great Expectations is a novel by Charles Dickens. It was first published in serial form in the publication All the Year Round from 1 December 1860 to August 1861. It has been adapted for stage and screen over 250 times. Great Expectations is written in the style of bildungsroman, which follows the story of a man or woman in their quest for maturity, usually starting from childhood and ending in the main character’s eventual adulthood. Great Expectations is the story of the orphan Pip, writing about his life and attempting to become a gentleman along the way. The novel can also be considered semi-autobiographical of Dickens, like much of his work, drawing on his experiences of life and people. The main plot of Great Expectations takes place between Christmas Eve 1812, when the protagonist is about seven years old (and which happens to be the year of Dickens’ birth), and the winter of 1840. On Christmas Eve of 1812, Pip, a boy aged 7, encounters an escaped convict in the village churchyard while visiting his mother and father’s graves. The convict scares Pip into stealing food for him and a file to grind away his leg shackles. He threatens Pip not to tell anyone and do as he says or his friend will cut out Pip’s heart. Pip returns home, where he lives with Mrs. Joe, his older sister, and her husband Joe Gargery. His sister is very cruel and beats him and Joe regularly, while Joe is much more kind to Pip. Early the next morning, Pip steals food and drink from the Gargery pantry (including a pie for their Christmas feast) and sneaks out to the graveyard. It is the first time in Pips life hes felt truly guilty. This is an important event in the book because the convict will never forget the kindness |

1866 Works $19.99 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Symphony in E, first performed on March 10, 1866, was the only symphony composed by Arthur Sullivan. It is frequently called the ‘Irish’ Symphony. There are four movements: The playing time is about thirty five minutes (or slightly longer if the exposition repeat is taken in the first movement). Sullivan began work on his symphony in 1863, very early in his career. From holiday in Ireland, he wrote that ‘as I was jolting home through wind and rain… in an open jaunting-car, the whole first movement of a symphony came into my head with a real Irish flavour about it besides scraps of the other movements.” The composer later wrote, “I always meant to call it the ‘Irish Symphony’, but I modestly refrained, as it was courting comparison with the ‘Scotch Symphony’.” The title did not appear on the published score until after Sullivan’s death, in the Novello edition of 1915. The first performance of the symphony was at The Crystal Palace in March 1866, thanks to the popular singer, Jenny Lind, who sponsored the concert and attracted an audience of 3,000 for her singing in the first half of the programme. The conductor was August Manns who had previously conducted the première of Sullivan’s incidental music to The Tempest. The symphony was well received, though the music critics, both then and later, observed the influence of other composers. The Times wrote, “Mr Sullivan should abjure Mendelssohn, even Beethoven and above all Schumann, for a year and a day.” In his 1960 study of Sullivan’s music Gervase Hughes also detects echoes of Schumann, and of Schubert as well. The symphony was performed frequently during Sullivan’s lifetime, but received few performances in the twentieth century. It has, however, been performed more frequently in recent… More: |

1930s Britain $15.95 In the 1930s, Britain underwent the most profound economic crisis of the twentieth century, with high unemployment, wage cuts, benefit cuts and an overall deterioration in living standards. This was Britain suffering from the cold spread around the world by the Wall Street Crash of 1929, and it was a decade remembered for its austerity. Yet there was another side to the decade. Industrial output, which fell in 1930-32, picked up in 1933, and by the following year had exceeded 1929 totals. Remarkable growth was experienced in 1935-38, despite a shorter working week, as productivity rose with the adoption of more productive industrial techniques. There was a housing boom and also a consumer boom fuelled by cheaper clothes and household goods. Slums were cleared and smart new houses erected all over Britain. At the same time social services improved markedly, and a diversification of leisure activities was made possible by new technology, transport improvements and the provision of paid holidays. 1930s Britain provides a realistic portrait of a very diverse, and always fascinating, decade in British social history, with coverage of the home and neighborhood, work, food and drink, shopping and style, entertainment, education, social services, health and transport giving readers a truly well-rounded view of life in 1930s Britain. |
