A Way of Work and a Way of Life: Coal Mining in Thurber, Texas, 1888-1926 $4.83 The coal mine represented much more than a way of making a living to the miners of Thurber, Texas, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries–it represented a way of life. Coal mining dominated Thurber’s work life, and miners dominated its social life. The large immigrant population that filled the mines in Thurber had arrived from more than a dozen nations, which lent a certain distinctiveness to this Texas town. In 1888 Robert D. Hunter and the Texas & Pacific Coal Company founded the town of Thurber on the site of Johnson Mines, a small coalmining village on the western edge of North Central Texas where Palo Pinto, Erath, and Eastland counties converged. William Whipple and Harvey E. Johnson first established a small community there in 1886 as the railroads’ demand for coal enhanced the possibility of financial reward for entrepreneurs willing to risk the effort to tap the thin bituminous coal veins that lay beneath the ground. Where the first comers failed, Hunter and his stockholders prevailed. For almost forty years the company mined coal and owned and operated a town that by 1910 served as home to more than three thousand residents. In some respects, the town mirrored the work and culture of bituminous coal mining communities throughout the United States. Like most, it experienced labor upheaval that reached a dramatic climax in 1903 when the United Mine Workers, emboldened and strengthened by successes in other parts of the Southwest, organized Thurber’s miners. Unlike elsewhere, however, the miners’ success at Thurber was not fraught with violence and loss of life; furthermore, in the strike’s aftermath good relations generally characterized employer/employeenegotiations. Marilyn Rhinehart examines the culture of the miners’ work, the demographics and social life of the community, and the benefits and constraints of life in a company town. Above all she demonstrates the features both at work and after work of a culture shaped by the occupation of |

A social work intervention for children with emotional and behavioral disabilities. $108 Partners in Success is a school social work intervention for children with emotional and behavioral disabilities who attend school in a separate site or segregated placement due to the severity of the behaviors associated with the disability. The purpose of the study was to improve school outcomes for children who have been removed from the mainstream. The key intervention strategy was the engagement of parents through joint goal setting with school social workers and teachers. Several decades of research show that when parents are invited to participate in the education of their children, children show improvement in grades and behaviors. Engaging the parents of children who have emotionally and behavioral disabilities has been challenging. Feelings of misunderstanding, mistrust and the rejection of both parents and children by schools, and a lack of understanding and accommodations for parents and children have been barriers to effective home-school partnerships.;A partial crossover design, delaying the intervention for the control group was used to test the intervention. Parents and teachers completed questionnaires at pretest, the time of crossover, and at posttest. The dependent variables, functional reading and math scores and behaviors were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention.;Most children in both groups showed modest improvement. No significant differences between the experimental and control groups at posttest were found. |

Bradford A.F.C. $19.75 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Valley Parade – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Manningham Rugby Football Club, formed in 1876, originally played games at Cardigan Fields, in the Carlisle Road area of Bradford. When their ground was sold to facilitate the construction of Drummond School, the club required a new home. Consequently, they bought one-third of the Valley Parade site in Manningham, taking a short-term lease out on the rest of the land in time to play there for the 188687 season. The new ground and the road it was built upon both adopted the name of the local area, Valley Parade, a name deriving from the steep hillside below Manningham. The land was previously a quarry, and formed part of a greater site owned by Midland Railway Company. The club spent £1,400 appointing designers to oversee the excavation and levelling of the land, and moved a one-year-old stand from Carlisle Road to the highest part of the new ground. The original ground comprised the relocated stand, a 2,000-capacity stepped enclosure with the players’ changing rooms beneath the stand, the playing area, a cinder athletics track and fencing to limit the total capacity to 18,000. The playing field was made of ballast, ashes, soil and sods. The ground was officially opened on 27 September 1886 for a game against Wakefield Trinity which was watched by a capacity crowd, but construction work meant most of Manningham’s early games were away fixtures. The ground’s current main standManningham RFC continued playing until 1903, when financial difficulties, caused by relegation at the turn of the century, prompted club officials to change codes from rugby football to association football. The first association football game to be played at Valley Parade was a promotional fixture on 6 April 1903 between a … More: |

The cathedral site has been home to a church for over a thousand years and the first stone church was built on there in Norman times. History With the creation of the Diocese of Blackburn in 1926 (taken from the Diocese of Manchester ) the impressive parish church of St Mary the Virgin was raised to cathedral status. The church, which was built in 1826 and designed by architect John Palmer , now forms the cathedral’s nave. In the early 1930s, fundraising began to enlarge the cathedral so that the building complemented its newfound importance. By 1938, enough money had been raised and work began on enlarging the new cathedral. Although work was interrupted by the war , it was resumed afterwards and continued through the 1950s and into the early 1960s. After the death of architect W.A. Forsyth in 1950, architect Laurence King joined the project and designed the distinctive lantern tower. The lantern tower, which consists of 56 different panes of coloured glass and an aluminium spire, was completed in 1967. The cathedral was finally completed in 1977 and what had been built over the past decades was finally consecrated as Blackburn Cathedral. Good Times Are All Gone Now: Life, Death, and Rebirth in an Idaho Mining Town $19.95 Julie Whitesel Weston left her hometown of Kellogg, Idaho, but eventually it pulled her back. Only when she returned to this mining community in the Idaho Panhandle did she begin to see the paradoxes of the place where she grew up. Her book combines oral history, journalistic investigation, and personal reminiscence to take a fond but hard look at life in Kellogg during “the good times.”Kellogg in the late 1940s and fifties was a typical American small town complete with high school football and basketball teams, marching band, and anti-Communist clubs; yet its bars, gambling dens, and brothels were entrenched holdovers from a rowdier frontier past. The Bunker Hill Mining Company, the largest employer, paid miners good wages for difficult, dangerous work, while the quest for lead, silver, and zinc denuded the mountainsides and laced the soil and water with contaminants.Weston researched the late-nineteenth-century founding of Kellogg and her family’s five generations in Idaho. She interviewed friends she grew up with, their parents, and her own parents’ friends—miners mostly, but also businesspeople, housewives, and professionals. Much of this memoir of place set during the Cold War and post-McCarthyism is told through their voices. But Weston also considers how certain people made a difference in her life, especially her band director, her ski coach, and an attorney she worked for during a major strike. She also explores her charged relationship with her father, a hardworking doctor revered in the community for his dedication but feared at home for his drinking and rages. The Good Times Are All Gone Now begins the day the smokestacks came down, and it reaches far back into collective and personal memory to understand a way of life now gone. The company town Weston knew is a different place, where “Uncle Bunker” is a Superfund site, and where the townspeople, as in previous hard times, have endured to |

Good, the Bad and the Difference: How To Tell The Right From Wrong In Everyday Situations $13.99 The man behind the New York Times Magazine’s immensely popular column “The Ethicist”–syndicated in newspapers across the United States and Canada as “Everyday Ethics”–casts an eye on today’s manners and mores with a provocative, thematic collection of advice on how to be good in the real world.Every week in his column on ethics, Randy Cohen takes on conundrums presented in letters from perplexed people who want to do the right thing (or hope to get away with doing the wrong thing), and responds with a skillful blend of moral authority and humor. Cohen’s wisdom and witticisms have now been collected in The Good, the Bad & the Difference, a collection of his columns as wise and funny as a combination of “Dear Abby,” Plato, and Mel Brooks. The columns are supplemented with second thoughts on (and sometimes complete reversals of) his original replies, follow-up notes on how his advice affected the actions of various letter writers, reactions from readers both pro and con, and observations from such “guest ethicists” as David Eggers and the author’s mom. Each chapter also features an “Ethics Pop Quiz,” and readers will be invited to post their answers on the book’s Web site. The best of them will appear in a future paperback edition of the book. The Good, the Bad & the Difference is divided into seven sections: •Civic Life (what we do in public) •Family Life (what we do at home) •Social Life (what we do in other people’s homes) •Commercial Life (what we do in situations wheremoney is a factor) •Medical Life (the rights and obligations of patients and caregivers) •Work Life (ethics for the professional sphere) •School Life (moral questions from and about kids)Each section provides a window into how we live |

Here, George Washington Was Born: Memory, Material Culture, and the Public History of a National Monument $9.95 In Here, George Washington Was Born, Seth C. Bruggeman examines the history of commemoration in the United States by focusing on the George Washington Birthplace National Monument in Virginia’s Northern Neck, where contests of public memory have unfolded with particular vigor for nearly eighty years.Washington left the birthplace with his family at a young age and rarely returned. The house burned in 1779 and would likely have passed from memory but for George Washington Parke Custis, who erected a stone marker on the site in 1815, creating the first birthplace monument in America. Both Virginia and the U.S. War Department later commemorated the site, but neither matched the work of a Virginia ladies association that in 1923 resolved to build a replica of the home. The National Park Service permitted construction of the “replica house” until a shocking archeological discovery sparked protracted battles between the two organizations over the building’s appearance, purpose, and claims to historical authenticity.Bruggeman sifts through years of correspondence, superintendent logs, and other park records to reconstruct delicate negotiations of power among a host of often unexpected claimants on Washington’s memory. By paying close attention to costumes, furnishings, and other material culture, he reveals the centrality of race and gender in the construction of Washington’s public memory and reminds us that national parks have not always welcomed all Americans. What’s more, Bruggeman offers the story of Washington’s birthplace as a cautionary tale about the perils and possibilities of public history by asking why we care about famous birthplaces at all. |

Hidden Lives $13.5 LIKE MONTICELLO, Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest offers a significant archeological view of slave life at the turn of the nineteenth century in rural Virginia. In Hidden Lives, Barbara J. Heath re-creates the daily life of slaves at Jefferson’s second home from 1773, the year he inherited the plantation, until 1812, when his reorganization of its landscape resulted in the destruction of a slave quarter. Drawing on census data, letters, memoranda, and other primary material, Heath describes the slave community’s family ties, the agricultural cycle of work, and the sickness and health care they experienced. Her portrait is enhanced by fresh archaeological findings and a wealth of illustrations, including site and contemporary maps,../images of slaves at work and at home, artifacts, and interpretive drawings.By looking at the social meaning of buildings, yards, and artifacts, Heath presents new interpretations of how individuals used materials to create a sense of self and community, how they acquired belongings, and how they safeguarded them. For visitors to historic sites and students and scholars of archaeology, Heath’s book offers a visual and textual exploration of complex relationships within the plantation and of the resulting choices, compromises, and limitations that Jefferson’s slaves negotiated in the process of making a home within the confines of institutionalized slavery. |

Historic Virginia Gardens: Preservation Work of the Garden Club of Virginia, 1975-2007 $33.76 For more than seventy-five years, The Garden Club of Virginia has undertaken garden research and preservation work at numerous historic sites across the Old Dominion, restoring and creating beautiful landscapes for the education and enjoyment of all, from backyard gardeners to design professionals. Historic Virginia Gardens documents in breathtaking fashion this important contribution to the Commonwealth’s botanical and architectural heritage. Picking up where an earlier volume, dedicated to the period from 1930 to 1975, left off, this new book brings the Club’s work from the period 1975 to 2007 to life through a graceful and informative text by Margaret Page Bemiss, a host of historical and contemporary drawings, extensive native and heritage plant lists, and 125 splendid new color photographs from the award-winning garden photographer Roger Foley. The gardens highlighted here range in location from the Eastern Shore to Blacksburg, and date from the seventeenth century to the twenty-first. Margaret Bemiss describes not only the preservation of the gardens, but also each place, its builder, and its historic context. Giving the reader a fuller understanding of why each particular garden or landscape was worth restoring or re-creating, Bemiss explains the site’s significance, in Virginia’s rich history as well as in the history of gardening and landscape design. In addition to Foley’s photographs, each narrative is also accompanied by bird’s-eye-view drawings and site plans for the gardens, along with working drawings of garden buildings, furniture, fences, and gates. Of particular interest to practicing gardeners and garden historians is the comprehensive list of native and imported plants that were utilized in the gardens. The significance of the projects, from George Washington’s Mount Vernon and Gari Melcher’s Belmont to the Prestons’ frontier home in Blacksburg and Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, make this book of interest not only to |

There is also a home in Washington City, exclusively for the benefit of soldiers who have served in the regular army. THE CENTRAL HOME, AT DAYTON, OHIO. In the selection of an eligible site for the Central Home, the attention of the Board of Managers was directed to the rich and fertile valley of the Miami, so well known for its beauty and salubrity; and finding it admirably adapted to the purposes of a home, they at once entered into negotiations for the purchase of five hundred and forty acres of land, about three miles west of the city of Dayton, and in 1867 active work was commenced. The lands at the time of the purchase were in the ordinary condition of farm lands of the state, possessing, however, natural beauty and great facilities for improvement. Above all, the supply of water was both abundant and excellent. On the grounds are several mineral springs, two of which have rare medicinal properties. Chaplain T. B. Van Horn, of the United States Army, was detailed bythe Secretary of “War, at the request of the Board of Managers, to lay out the grounds; and the Home, with its broad avenues, heautiful lakes, splendid groves, and cultivated lawns, presents one of the most attractive places in the country. The site overlooks the cityand the beautiful scenery of the Miami valley for miles around. The work of improvement has been prosecuted most vigorously, and alterations and additions are being made continually. House: Black Swan Theory $25 In 1989, Princeton Architectural Press published Anchoring, the first book on the work of the then up-and-coming architect Steven Holl. Since then, Holl has become one of the most famous and highly regarded architects in the world through his award-winning residential and institutional work; his teaching, writings, and drawings; and his persistent vision of an architecture that takes into consideration its place, time, and all the senses of the viewer. This philosophy helped to create some of the richest and most celebrated buildings of the past several decades. Indeed, in 2001, Time magazine called Holl “America’s Best Architect for ‘buildings that satisfy the spirit as well as the eye.’”Sequels to AnchoringIntertwining and Parallaxchronicled Holl’s work from the period 1988 to 1995. House brings us up-to-date on Holl’s most recent residences and collects his best-known projects from the past including a total of fifteen of Holl’s residential works. Rather than having an unvarying style, these houses aim at the sometimes elusive ideal of the specific. Each house tackles a different design challenge, using site as the physical and metaphysical foundation upon which to build. Fusing building and situation, Holl creates a unique expression in each home. Beautiful andinnovative, the houses span the globe, ranging from a secluded location in Hawaii, to the Catskill Mountains of New York, to Martha’s Vineyard, to the Hague in the Netherlands. Each project is accompanied by Holl’s charming watercolor building studies as well as an insightful explanation of how he was inspired by the land upon which the house sits and how the sumptuous materials utilized reflect the spirit of the location. |

Laboring To Play $6.85 A compelling analysis of how middling Americans entertained themselves and how these entertainments changed over time. The purposes of Laboring to Play are several: to give new and sustained attention to the parlor as an important site of social and cultural formation; to consider the ways in which home entertainment texts and practices helped shape an emerging middle-class identity in the United States; to chart the evolution of such texts and practices and thus also their changing effects on class formation; to extend existing scholarship on the middle class; to reexamine the inter-relationship of work and play in American culture; and to explore the roles of pleasure and game-playing in American identity. Highly effective are the detailed readings of the ‘entertainment chronotope’ in a number of important American literary texts, including Alcott’s Little Women, Wharton’s The House of Mirth, Lewis’s Main Street, Gilman’s Herland, and Cather’s My Antonia. –William Gleason, author of The Leisure Ethic: Work and Play in American Literature, 1840-1940. A learned and engaging analysis based on an impressive body of research. . . . Dawson’s focus on entertainment in the home has the benefit of providing us with a close and careful look at the intersections between ideologies of domesticity, class, and leisure. –Cynthia J. Davis, author of Bodily and Narrative Forms: The Influence of Medicine in American Literature, 1845-1915 |

Mobile Home $46.16 Mobile homes or static caravans are prefabricated homes built in factories, rather than on site, and then taken to the place where they will be occupied. They are usually transported by tractor-trailers over public roads to sites which are often in rural areas or high-density developments. In some countries they are used for temporary accommodation on campsites. While these houses are usually placed in one location and left there permanently, they do retain the ability to be moved as this is a requirement in many areas. Behind the cosmetic work fitted at installation to hide the base, there are strong trailer frames, axles, wheels and tow-hitches. The two major sizes are single-wides and double-wides. Single-wides are eighteen feet or less in width and 90 feet (27 m) or less in length and can be towed to their site as a single unit. Double-wides are twenty feet or more wide and are 90 feet (27 m) in length or less and are towed to their site in two separate units, which are then joined together. |

Mothballed $13.97 MOTHBALLEDLondon has been awarded the 2012 Olympic Games, but preparations are not going to plan. There is an immediate requirement for an expensive, indoor training facility, but times are tough, and money does not grow on trees. The problem could be solved by a generous act of selflessness, from the European Community…….motivated by a desire to keep under wraps, recent illegitimate funding, of French agriculture.Better still, Milton Pigden, an entrepreneurial Developer, with all the right connections, is aware of a piece of land that will be ideal for the development……and he’s well connected with its owners, the international consumables manufacturer, Oswald and Parker. The O & P Company even have the right men on hand to ensure the project will be a redoubtable success; Paul Silverman their local Chief Executive, has years of business experience, and allowing that he can keep his alcoholism and penchant for the fairer sex under control, will be just the man for the job. Better still, he can be assisted by O & P’s workaholic Export Manager, Melvyn Garratt, who appears to have most of his phobia’s and neurosis, in check, these days…..and Simon Chang, a man with a big heart, and small understanding of English, whose father owns a slice of the Company. Problem solved then? Well possibly, but we should remember that the proposed site is perilously close to the infamous Newhall Wood Estate, the home of the ultra right wing, English Assembly political party……..and not forget that the recent escalation of violence, as street gangs vie for control of the local drug trade……… and bear in mind that the Moslem community, is still outraged at the rejection of their offer, to buy the land and build asuper mosque? I suppose we should also not forget, that construction work could prove unsettling for a timid resident of the wood, the elusive Carriage Clock moth……and that disruption of this type is not likely to be welcomed by the resident |

Nuuk: University of Greenland, Royal Arctic Line, Kalaallit Nunaata Radioa, Nuuk Stadium, Godthabhallen $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Nuuk – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Statue of Hans EgedeThe site has a long history of different inhabitation: first by the ancient pre-Inuit, Paleo-Eskimo people known as the Saqqaq culture around 2000 BC, later by Viking explorers in the 10th century, and shortly thereafter by Inuit peoples. Inuit and Norsemen both lived with little interaction in this area from around 1000 AD until around 1500 AD, when Norse habitation stopped, most likely due to change in climate and vegetation. The city was founded in 1728 by the Danish-Norwegian missionary Hans Egede, and given the name Godthåb (Good Hope). Hans Egede had arrived at a place close to the already existing Inuit population living in Kangeq. At that time, Greenland was a Norwegian colony under the Dano-Norwegian Crown, but the colony had not had any contact with Norway proper for almost three centuries . In 1733 to 1734 a smallpox epidemic killed most of the native population as well as Hans Egede’s wife. Hans Egede went back to Denmark after 15 years in Greenland leaving his son Paul Egede to continue his parent’s work. In 1979, the city was renamed Nuuk by the Greenland Home Rule government. Like the rest of Greenland, Nuuk is populated today by both Inuit and Danes. Currently, over a third of Greenland’s total population lives in the Nuuk’s Greater Metropolitan area. Nuuk is located at approximately . at the mouth of the Nuuk Fjord (Kalaallisut: , Danish: ), some 10 km from the shores of Davis Strait on the southwestern coast of Greenland, and about 240 km (150 mi) south of the Arctic Circle. All of Greenland’s electricity is powered by the government owned company Nukissiorfiit, that has the monopoly of electricity in Greenland Nuuk gets its electric power mainly fro… More: |

(In Ethiopian languages: Amharic, Adis Abäba “new flower”; Oromo, Finfinne; Ge’ez ??? ???) It is the largest city in Ethiopia, with a population of 3,384,569 according to the 2008 population census. As a chartered city (ras gez astedader), Addis Ababa has the status of both a city and a state. It is where the African Union and its predecessor the OAU are based. Addis Ababa is therefore often referred to as “the political capital of Africa”, due to its historical, diplomatic and political significance for the continent. The city is populated by people from different regions of Ethiopia – the country has as many as 80 nationalities speaking 80 languages and belonging to a wide variety of religious communities. The site of Addis Ababa was chosen by Empress Taytu Betul and the city was founded in 1886 by her husband, Emperor Menelik II. The name of the city (??? ???) was taken from parts of the city called hora Finfinnee (“hot springs”) in Oromo. Another Oromo name of the city is Sheger. Menelik, as initially a King of the Shewa province, had found Mount Entoto a useful base for military operations in the south of his realm, and in 1879 visited the reputed ruins of a medieval town, and an unfinished rock church that showed proof of an Ethiopian presence in the area prior to the campaigns of Ahmad Gragn. His interest in the area grew when his wife Taytu began work on |

Otherwise Known as Home $5.01 Used – Poetry. “The poems shimmering in this volume represent an intense and vertiginous new beginning of the sonnet, erupting from the site of ‘end words.’ Tim Wood’s re-embarkations are thrilling. I hesitate to impose metaphors on a work of art that stands on its own terms, but something related to time travel might turn attention in the right direction. Yet again, knowing that the poems originate with Shakespeare’s sonnets simply doesn’t prepare one for reading them, or at least only to the d |

Pentagon: A History $13.99 The creation of the Pentagon in seventeen whirlwind months during World War II is one of the great construction feats in American history, involving a tremendous mobilization of manpower, resources, and minds. In astonishingly short order, Brigadier General Brehon B. Somervell conceived and built an institution that ranks with the White House, the Vatican, and a handful of other structures as symbols recognized around the world. Now veteran military reporter Steve Vogel reveals for the first time the remarkable story of the Pentagon’s construction, from it’s dramatic birth to its rebuilding after the September 11 attack. At the center of the story is the tempestuous but courtly Somervell–“dynamite in a Tiffany box,” as he was once described. In July 1941, the Army construction chief sprang the idea of building a single, huge headquarters that could house the entire War Department, then scattered in seventeen buildings around Washington. Somervell ordered drawings produced in one weekend and, despite a firestorm of opposition, broke ground two months later, vowing that the building would be finished in little more than a year. Thousands of workers descended on the site, a raffish Virginia neighborhood known as Hell’s Bottom, while an army of draftsmen churned out designs barely one step ahead of their execution. Seven months later the first Pentagon employees skirted seas of mud to move into the building and went to work even as construction roared around them. The colossal Army headquarters helped recast Washington from a sleepy southern town into the bustling center of a reluctant empire.Vivid portraits are drawn of other key figures in the drama, among them Franklin D. Roosevelt, the president who fancied himself an architect; Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson and Army Chief of Staff General George C. Marshall, both desperate for a home for the War Department as the country prepared for battle; Colonel Leslie R. |
