Critical Cyberculture Studies $81.72 View the Table of Contents .nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; Read the Introduction . As studies of the Internet and cyberculture begin to mature, it is a particularly important time for critical studies–critical of the subject matter, and critical of the emerging field itself. The consciously interdisciplinary approach ofCritical Cyberculture Studies, and the depth and breadth of the contributions, make this an important foundational work for a new field of study. If only we had had a critical study of communication when the Gutenberg revolution was beginning! Howard Rheingold, author ofThe Virtual CommunityandSmart Mobs This expansive book functions as both survey and call to action. Even as they map the shifting contours of an emergent field, the editors and contributors warn against the deadening force of disciplinarity. They encourage a nimble, flexible formulation of cyberculture studies, one that can keep pace with the rapid pulse of technological change and, more importantly, also address the injustices wrought of life in a networked age. Like the best traditions of cultural studies, they aim not just to describe our moment but to matter in the world. Tara McPherson, USC School of Cinema-Television Starting in the early 1990s, journalists and scholars began responding to and trying to take account of new technologies and their impact on our lives. By the end of the decade, the full-fledged study of cyberculture had arrived. Today, there exists a large body of critical work on the subject, with cutting-edge studies probing beyond the mere existence of virtual communities and online identities to examine the social, cultural, and economic relationships that take place online. Takingstock of the exciting work that is being done and positing what cyberculture’s future might look like, Critical Cyberculture Studiesbrings together a diverse and multidisciplinary group of scholars from around the world to assess the state of the field. Opening with a historical |

Design Entrepreneur: Turning Graphic Design into Goods That Sell (Design Field Guide Series) $40 Designers are used to working for clients, but there is nothing better than when the client is oneself. Graphic and product designers, who are skilled with the tools and masters aesthetics, are now in the forefront of this growing entrepreneur movement. Whether personal or collective, drive is the common denominator of all entrepreneurial pursuit; of course, then comes the brilliant idea; and finally the fervent wherewithal to make and market the result. The Design Entrepreneur is the first book to survey this new field and showcase the innovators who are creating everything from books to furniture, clothes to magazines, plates to surfboards, and more. Through case studies with designers like Dave Eggers, Maira Kalman, Charles Spencer Anderson, Seymour Chwast, Jet Mous, Nicholas Callaway, Jordi Duró, and over thirty more from the United States and Europe, this book explores the whys, hows, and wherefores of the conception and production processes. The design entrepreneur must take the leap away from the safety of the traditional designer role into the precarious territory where the public decides what works and what doesn’t. This is the book that shows how that is accomplished.Steven Heller and Lita Talarico are co-chairs of the MFA Design program of the School of Visual Arts where students are encouraged to become design entrepreneurs. Heller is the author and co-author of over 100 books on design and popular culture. He is the editor of AIGA VOICE the online design journal and a contributing editor to Print, ID, EYE, and Baseline magazines. For thirty-three years he was an art director of the New York Times and now writes a column for the New York Times Book Review. He is the recipient of the AIGA Medal for Lifetime Achievement. Talarico holds an MFA in art criticism and is the co-author of books on design, including Design Career. The authors have created a website for the book. Disability documentation criteria for students with learning disabilities in higher education. $69 As students with learning disabilities transition from high school to post-secondary education they encounter a multitude of barriers. It is essential that these transitioning students carefully plan and fully prepare themselves to succeed in the higher education environment. A few keys to success include (a) selecting the right institution, (b) providing sensitivity training for faculty and staff, (c) encouraging parents to promote independence in their children, and (d) incorporating assistive technology. Students are expected to take the lead for the first time by documenting their disability and requesting accommodations. Unfortunately, the documentation that they are expected to present is typically not what they received in high school. This disconnect should be mended to facilitate a seamless transition.;This study surveyed disability support services programs at institutions of postsecondary education and collected information about their criteria for documentation for students with learning disabilities. The researcher worked in collaboration with the Association of Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) to create a robust online survey and to reach a wide population of disability support services programs. One hundred and sixty two respondents completed the online survey.;The results of the survey confirmed the researcher’s hypothesis that there is a great deal of incongruency between schools regarding their documentation requirements for students with learning disabilities. These results could be devastating to students who need and expect to obtain academic accommodations at the post-secondary level. |

Chapters: The Black Scorpion, Wake of the Red Witch, They Just Had to Get Married, the Fighting Seabees, That Certain Age, the Big Wheel, Big Jim Mclain, Swiss Family Robinson. Excerpt: The Black Scorpion is a 1957 horror film released by Warner Brothers, with stop motion special effects done by Willis O’Brien. The film begins when an earthquake hits Mexico, resulting in the overnight birth of a new volcano. Sent to study this phenomenon are geologists Dr. Hank Scott and his partner Dr. Arturo Ramos. En route to the village of San Lorenzo, the two men happen upon a destroyed house and an equally totaled police car. Shortly afterward, they find the dead policeman nearby, as well as an abandoned infant. They take the baby to San Lorenzo and give it to some friends of its (now missing) parents, and are welcomed by the village’s priest, Father Delgado. In addition to the disappearances of locals and the destruction of their homes, there have been wholesale slaughters of livestock and strange roars in the night. The villagers believe the culprit to be a demon bull, and have been pestering Delgado for divine assistance. Undaunted, Hank and Arturo begin their geological survey as members of the Mexican army, led by Major Cosio, arrive in San Lorenzo to begin disaster relief efforts. Hank meets and falls in love with local rancher Teresa Alvarez and makes friends with a young boy named Juanito. The volcano erupts again and the true culprits behind the disappearances and deaths are revealed as giant prehistoric scorpions. After attacking a trio of telephone repairmen, the scorpions turn their attention to San Lorenzo itself, with the guns of Major Cosio’s troops having no effect on them. Come morning, the scorpions have returned to their underground lair (whi… More: |

Excerpt: Quantitative marketing research is the application of quantitative research techniques to the field of marketing. It has roots in both the positivist view of the world, and the modern marketing viewpoint that marketing is an interactive process in which both the buyer and seller reach a satisfying agreement on the “four Ps” of marketing: Product, Price, Place (location) and Promotion. As a social research method, it typically involves the construction of questionnaires and scales. People who respond (respondents) are asked to complete the survey. Simply, there are five major and important steps involved in the research process: A brief discussion on these steps is: The design step may involve a pilot study to in order to discover any hidden issues. Excerpt: The Noachis quadrangle is one of a series of 30 quadrangle maps of Mars used by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Astrogeology Research Program. The Noachis quadrangle is also referred to as MC-27 (Mars Chart-27). The Noachis quadrangle covers the area from 300° to 360° west longitude and 30° to 65° south latitude on Mars. It lies between the two giant impact basins on Mars: Argyre and Hellas. Noachis is so densely covered with craters that it is considered among the oldest places on Mars. When a location on Mars is as old, it is said to be Noachian in age. In many places on Mars, buried craters are being exposed. That is a crater was formed long ago, then was buried, and is now being exposed. This takes place in Noachis, as Noachis is plenty old enough for this process to take place. The fist bit of human hardwear to land on Mars landed (crashed) in the Noachis quadrangle. The Soviet’s Mars 2 crashed at 44.2° S and 313.2° W. It weighed about one ton. The automated craft attempted to land in a giant dust storm. To make conditions even worse, this area also has many dust devils. Certain regions of Mars display scalloped-shaped depressions. The depression are believed to be the remains of an ice-rich mantle deposit. Scallops were caused by ice sublimating from frozen soil. This mantle material probably fell from the air as ice formed on dust when the climate was different due to changes in the tilt of the Mars pole. The scallops are typically tens of meters deep and from a few hundred to a few thousand meters across. They can be almost circular or elongated. Some appear to have coalesced causing a large heavily pitted terrain to form. The process of forming the terrain may begin with sublimation from a crack. There are often polygon … |

Excerpt: The China Study (ISBN 1-932100-38-5) is a 2005 book by T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D., and his son, Thomas M. Campbell II. Dr. Campbell is a professor of Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University, and one of the directors of the China Project. The book examines the relationship between the consumption of animal products and illnesses such as cancers of the breast, prostate, and large bowel, diabetes, coronary heart disease, obesity, autoimmune disease, osteoporosis, degenerative brain disease, and macular degeneration. “The China Study,” referred to in the title is the China Project, a “survey of death rates for twelve different kinds of cancer for more than 2,400 counties and 880 million (96%) of their citizens” combined to study the relationship between various mortality rates and several dietary, lifestyle and environmental characteristics in 65 mostly rural counties in China conducted jointly by Cornell University, Oxford University, and the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine over the course of twenty years. The authors introduce and explain the conclusions of scientific studies, which have correlated animal-based diets with disease. The authors conclude that diets high in animal protein (including casein in cow’s milk) are strongly linked to diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and Type 2 diabetes. The authors recommend that people eat a whole food, plant-based diet and avoid consuming beef, poultry, eggs, fish and milk as a means to minimize and/or reverse the development of chronic disease. The authors also recommend that people take in adequate amounts of sunshine in order to maintain sufficient levels of Vitamin D and consider taking dietary supplements of vitamin B12 in case of complete avoidance of animal products. Virtual rituals: Structural ritualization theory and massive multiplayer online role-playing games. $49.99 Scope and method of study. Special collective events and rituals are important to strengthening commitment to a community. The world of MMORPGs has their own unique collective events and rituals that help build the community that players participate in. A recent theoretical framework known as Structural Ritualization Theory provides a set of formal definitions for rituals that allow the impact of special events on emotional states and commitment to a group in special collective events to be measured. This thesis will present data collected from an online survey that was designed to measure how the collective events that players take part in while online (i.e., in MMORPGs) create an emotional intensity that builds commitment to the virtual community in which they play. Findings and conclusions. Ritual events in MMORPGs do generate emotional intensity and commitment to community. A path analysis indicated that certain components of a collective event have direct effects on emotional intensity and commitment to community. Emotional intensity does not provide an indirect path to commitment to community. |
