5th in Series: How to Get Paid Taking Surveys and Other Creative Online Jobs
Working From Home has many advantages for all types of people. I read an article the other day about how the elderly are getting in to making money from home because so many of them have lost their retirement funds when the market crashed. The elderly are very fortuitous to be living in an age where they have an opportunity to make money when their bodies are worn out. The saddest part of the situation to me is that the elderly are the smartest folks in our society. They have sharp minds and capability to work, but their bodies just can’t do what they used to.
Anyone that has spent a significant amount of time around the elderly knows how strapped they are for money, how bored they are and how much they worry. I think it’s wonderful that the elderly are learning how to use computers to make enough money to pay their bills, buy their medications, give their grandkids birthday and Christmas money and ease their stress. It makes me want to high five all the old folks who are smart enough and creative enough to kick butt making money.
As I’ve mentioned before in this series, when my daughter was born I was a single mom. I was struggling hard to make ends meet and finally found a way to make money at home taking online surveys. It isn’t easy to take care of a child alone and work from home, but it can be done. Because I did online Surveys For money I stayed off of welfare and managed to go to college. Now it’s my turn to help others that are in the same situation I was once in. Surveys aren’t the only way to work from home, but they’re easy, even when you’re distracted. A good place to find Legitimate Paid Surveys is at http://www.getpaidtotry.com/. You can get paid to read emails through them too. Now it’s time to mention other ways to make money from home.
1) If you’ve got graphic design skills you can do tons of different projects. One good one is to create clip art. Clip art is used in everything from letter heads to power point presentations.
2) If you love to read, there are companies you can find through bidding sites like oDesk, Elance, etc. that pay people to dig, stumble, etc articles. Some even pay for sharing these stories on Facebook.
3) Speaking of Facebook, some companies will pay you to find Facebook friends. The world of social networking is huge, and companies are coming up with new ways to use Facebook and other networking sites to advertize. If you can find the opportunity to do a job like this, stick with it. The market is going to boom.
Stay tuned for more on how to get paid taking surveys and other creative online jobs. If you have success stories or job ideas, please leave them in the comments section. I hope these ideas are paying off for you folks.

A Guide To Biblical Commentaries & Reference Works $16.95 With thousands of commentaries on the Bible available, including dozens and sometimes hundreds for individual books, it can be difficult for students and pastors (and even many academics) to keep track of the options. How do the different series and authors approach the Bible? What commentaries are critical and/or more theologically liberal in their interpretation? Which writers share a given theological approach (e.g., Reformed, Wesleyan, etc.)? Without help, students and pastors could waste precious time and money searching for the tools they need to aid their study. Now in its 9th edition, Dr. Evans’s guide is a comprehensive survey and bibliography of resources that is one of the most thorough and detailed aids available to help pastors and theological students sort through the many volumes of commentaries and reference works that are available to them. Evans surveys the vast majority of commentary series, individual commentaries by book, and other resources directly related to exegetical research and biblical interpretation. In addition, Evans includes recommendations for: a “Bare-Bones” library of essentials; an ideal pastor’s reference library; and a suggested “ultimate reference library”. Regularly updated, A Guide to Biblical Commentaries & Reference Works is one of the very few works of its kind to be conversant with recent releases. It is also the largest of its kind, and one of the few single-volume surveys that covers the entire Bible. |

Analysis of Multidimensional Poverty: Theory and Case Studies $159 This book presents a new method for measuring multidimensional poverty. The author critically analyzes various statistical approaches, and proposes a new way of applying the factorial technique, Multiple Correspondence Analysis, to poverty analysis. The core of this new appraoch rests on the identification of poverty types and on the construction of a Composite Indicator of Poverty, which objectively weights the multiple categories of poverty. Built as a two-step approach, Multiple Correspondence Analysis allows for the integration of money-metric income techniques. The author reflects on the conceptual debates and dimensions of poverty, presenting empirical studies showing the strengths and weaknesses of various poverty-measurement methodologies. The first part of the book is theoretical. In it, the author uses examples to develop the rationale underlying the new approach. The second part of the book presents two case studies: one from Vietnam and the other from Senegal. Each study uses Multiple Correspondence Analysis and both are based on large household surveys implemented by the respective national statistical offices. The unique structure of this book makes it practical for use by poverty and policy researchers, professionals in international development, and graduate students interested in poverty and inequality. |

Breadcrumbs and Banana Skins: The Birth of Thrift $14.95 In the early twentieth century, many housewives had no choice but to make every penny count. Stringent meal-planning, thrifty shopping, and careful cooking were second nature in families where money was tight, and vigilant use and re-use of every resource from coal to hot-water bottles ensured that nothing was wasted and little was thrown away. Cookery books of the period offered cheap recipes, menu plans, meals made by means of little or no fuel in hay boxes and jam jars, and prepared using leftovers. This book surveys the range of money-saving and thrifty living advice offered to housewives in the years before the Second World War, from strict budgeting to penny capitalism, and demonstrates that the practice of thrift was entrenched in the national consciousness before the war years. Moreover, it contains advice that can still be followed in today’s households. |

Comparative Consumer Insolvency Regimes: A Canadian Perspective $119.85 All modern legal systems within advanced economies must address the question of how to respond to the needs of insolvent consumers whose burden of debt greatly exceeds their capacity to repay within a reasonable time frame. This study surveys comparatively the insolvency regimes currently in place or likely to be adopted in the foreseeable future in Canada, the United States, Australia, England and Wales, Scotland, Scandinavia and a representative group of Western countries on the continent of Europe. Modern legal systems have two basic alternatives in providing relief for over-committed consumers. The first, which involves restricting the enforcement of individual creditor remedies is a method with which this study is not concerned. Where the consumer is seriously insolvent and owes money to many creditors, a different approach is required – a collective solution to debtor”s problems – and this, the solution provided by modern insolvency systems, is the focus of this study. |

Discover the Wealth Within You: A Financial Plan For Creating a Rich and Fulfilling Life $10.99 Chapter OneDoes the Cabbie KnowWhere You Want to Go?Have you ever gotten into a cab but refused to tell the driver where you want to go? Of course not. The whole point of hailing a cab is to have the driver help you get to your destination. You tell him your goal, and the cabbie both develops the plan for getting you there and implements it for you.Financial planning operates the same way. Thus, if you don’t have goals, the planning effort is as pointless as asking a cabbie to drive you around town, with no destination in mind.I bet you can tell me what surveys reveal are the top three reasons people save money. They are:To buy a homeTo pay for collegeTo afford a comfortable retirementIf you were to expand this list, you could add:wedding costscapital expenses, such as a carcelebrations, such as a couple’s 50th anniversaryvacationsmajor medical expenseselder care costsand, ultimately, leaving your money to your kids and/or other heirs. Each of the aboveis a common reason why people save and invest. Each requires or constitutes a set of goals. And when combined, each fits into an overall financial plan. But one thing bothers me about this entire list. And I imagine it bothers you, too. You know what the problem |

Don’t Call Us Out of Name: The Untold Lives of Women and Girls in Poor America $20 A radically new vision of women and girls living below the poverty line; Lisa Dodson makes a frontal assault on conventional attitudes and stereotypes of women in poor America and the seriously misguided “welfare reform” policies of the end of the century.”I hear Odessa, a thirty-two-year-old woman, speak at a forum on welfare reform. I ask her about the phrase she used, ‘Don’t call me out of name,’ for it seemed to speak for a whole nation of people. Odessa tells me that women who have no money and no one to stand up for them get put into a bad position and they get misnamed. Most often they get called ‘welfare mothers’ or ‘recipients,’ words she will no longer acknowledge. With millions alongside her, Odessa has emerged by her own strength and some opportunity, and now she insists upon naming herself.”While Lisa Dodson was working in a Charlestown factory twenty years ago, the stories of the women she worked with daily captivated her; she listened to them speak about harsh lives and their deep commitment to family and community. It was the beginning of Dodson’s desire to learn the truth and write it down. For over eight years, Dodson has been documenting the lives of girls and women-hundreds of white, African-American, Latino, Haitian, Irish, and other women in personal interviews, focus groups, surveys, and Life-History Studies. This book is a crossing—a class crossing—taking readers into fellowship with people who are seldom invited to speak but who have powerful stories to tell and who force us to abandon common myths that have been fed to us by the media about school dropouts, teen pregnancy, and welfare “cheats.” Don’t Call Us Out of Name delves deeply into the realities of their lives, often with surprising and uplifting stories of commonplace courage, unimaginable strength, and resourcefulness. Lisa Dodson does not simply give us the truth about women living in poverty but offers realistic hope for meaningful policy reform based on |

First Person Political $93.48 First Person Politicalilluminates why people run for and serve in state legislatures from the standpoint of the legislators themselves and in a way that increases our appreciation of representative democracy. Part of the charm of this book is that it is intensely personal and, therefore, compelling. Karl Kurtz, co-author ofRepublic on Trial: The Case for Representative Democracy First Person Politicalfills an important void in our understanding of politicians and politics. Through a combination of surveys and the tools of the political scientist, Reeher provides for the reader both empathy and insight into what makes politicians tick at the state legislative level. We may not like what our state legislators do, but reading this work will help us understand much better who we elect and the constraints that operate on them. Thomas J. Volgy, author ofPolitics in the Trenches: Citizens, Politicians, and the Fate of Democracy ocirc; An informative, sophisticated, and entertaining book. Reeher’s interviews with three sets of state lawmakers in three distinct legislatures provide candor, real food for thought, and wonderful insights.First Person Politicalstands as a real contribution to understanding legislative politics, the people who practice these politics, and how to gently nudge politicians to provide candid glimpses of their world.ouml; Burdett Loomis, co-author ofThe Sound of Money: How Political Interest Groups Get What They Want InFirst Person Political, Grant Reeher combats the public’s alienation from and distrust of politicians by putting a personal face on everyday political life. Through moving personal interviews, Reeher allows legislators to tell their ownstories about how and why they came to politics, the experience of serving in their state legislature, their decisions to stay or leave, and the many trials they face in the name of public service. Reeher contends that these politicians do have the public good in mind and often su |

How to Read the Victorian Novel $32.95 How to Read the Victorian Novel provides a unique introduction to the genre. Using examples from the classics, like The Pickwick Papers, David Copperfield, Jane Eyre, The Woman in White, and Middlemarch, it demonstrates just how unfamiliar their familiarity is. The book attempts to break free of the sense that the Victorian novel is somehow old fashioned, moralizing, and formally careless by emphasizing the complexity, difficulty, and rare pleasures of the Victorian writers’ strenuous efforts both to entertain and to teach; to create serious “art” and to appeal to wide audiences; to respond both to the demands of publishing and also to their own rich imaginative engagement with a world heading into modernity at full speed. Broad in its scope, the text surveys a wide variety of literary types and explores the cultural and historical developments of the novel form itself. The book also poses a series of “big questions” pertaining to money, capitalism, industry, race, gender, and, at the same time, to formal issues, such as plotting, perspective, and realist representation. In addition, it locates the qualities that give to the great variety of Victorian novels a “family resemblance,” the material conditions of their production, their tendency to multiply plots, their obsession with class and money, their problematic handling of gender questions, and their commitment to realist representation. How to Read the Victorian Novel challenges our comfortable expectations of the genre in order to explore intensively a burgeoning and changing literary form which mirrors a burgeoning and changing society. |

But as Fred McChesney shows, this perspective affords only a partial understanding of why private interests are paying, and what |

There are introductions to each section, and an introduction to the entire collection that outlines the connections throughout and surveys the current state of macroeconomic theory. |

Money, Inflation, and Capital Formation: An Analysis of the Long Run from the Perspective of Overlapping Generations Models $82.63 This book offers a comprehensive analysis of long run effects of inflation on real activity. The first part presents detailed surveys of the theoretical and empirical literature. The second part introduces a monetary version of an overlapping generations economy with production and a single outside asset as a base model and offers thereby a unified framework to organize the debate. Drawing on recent contributions from the theoretical literature and new results established by the author, various modifications to the base model are discussed. These modifications address a diverse range of features such as imperfections in credit markets, random liquidity needs, transaction aspects of money in a context with multiple means of payment, and the coexistence of multiple outside assets. Throughout the second part of the book consistent notation is used, and particular attention is paid to a careful classification of comparative statics and dynamic properties of steady state equilibria. |

Neuroeconomics: A Guide to the New Science of Making Choices $39.99 As technology has opened new windows into the brain, it has clarified what happens there when people make decisions about money. This clarity has produced a new science called neuroeconomics, which addresses diverse questions, such as why people save, buy stocks, steal, and overspend. The many different methods used in neuroeconomics have, however, often yielded unclear findings about the quality of these decisions, primarily because the field has lacked both guidelines for categorizing the different aspects of quality, and guidelines for selecting methods to study these aspects. Before this book, in which Peter Politser guides the reader through the different regions of study, there was no scientific guide for those interested in neuroeconomics. Politser shows how to evaluate specific elements of choice, such as regret, expectation, risk, ambiguity, time preference, and learning, and surveys economic and behavioral models of decision making skills. He reviews the neural correlates of decisional impairments and inconsistenciesclarifying, for example, why we do not recall what we experience, experience what we expect, or like what we want, and provides detailed tables of decision-making skills, their neural correlates, and possible impairments. Politser also considers what the field of neuroeconomics may add to future conceptions of decision making, and outlines the limitations of various studies of different capacities. He then introduces a broader field for the design and interpretation of neuroeconomic studiesa neuroepidemiology of decision making. Everyone who wants to understand the research in neuroeconomics or use its methods should read this book. Its accessible text, along with an extensive glossary, will guide those with little economic or neuroscience background, and make the book an excellent supplement for courses on neuroscience and decision making. |

Passing the Plate: Why American Christians Don’t Give Away More Money $24.95 Passing the Plate shows that few American Christians donate generously to religious and charitable causes — a parsimony that seriously undermines the work of churches and ministries. Far from the 10 percent of one’s income that tithing requires, American Christians’ financial giving typically amounts, by some measures, to less than one percent of annual earnings. And a startling one out of five self-identified Christians gives nothing at all. This eye-opening book explores the reasons behind such ungenerous giving, the potential world-changing benefits of greater financial giving, and what can be done to improve matters. If American Christians gave more generously, say the authors, any number of worthy projects — from the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS to the promotion of inter-religious understanding to the upgrading of world missions — could be funded at astounding levels. Analyzing a wide range of social surveys and government and denominational statistical datasets and drawing on in-depth interviews with Christian pastors and church members in seven different states, the book identifies a crucial set of factors that appear to depress religious financial support — among them the powerful allure of a mass-consumerist culture and its impact on Americans’ priorities, parishioners’ suspicions of waste and abuse by nonprofit administrators, clergy’s hesitations to boldly ask for money, and the lack of structure and routine in the way most American Christians give away money. In their conclusion, the authors suggest practical steps that clergy and lay leaders might take to counteract these tendencies and better educate their congregations about the transformative effects of generous giving.By illuminating the social and psychological forces that shape charitable giving, Passing the Plate is sure to spark a much-needed debate on a critical issue that is of much interest to church-goers, religious leaders, philanthropists, |

Serious Money: Fundraising and Contributing in Presidential Nomination Campaigns $45 Serious Money offers a detailed analysis of the relationship between fundraising methods and contributing decisions in presidential nomination campaigns, specifically 1988 and 1992. Brown, Powell, and Wilcox explore the fundamental differences between direct mail solicitation and personal solicitation networks, and how candidate resources dictate the use of unique methods of solicitation. Candidate resources analyzed include home-state power bases, access to national party networks and the national legislative agenda, congressional office, social identity, and ideological proximity. With respect to contributing decisions, the book focuses on the three fundamental sources of the decision to contribute: the purposive, solidary, and material motives of contributors. The research is based largely upon newly conducted surveys of contributors to presidential candidates in 1992 and 1988, on a panel study of the 1988 contributors designed to examine campaign targeting decisions and contributing behavior during the 1992 election cycle, and on interviews with campaign fundraising professionals. |

Social Causes of Psychological Distress $47.12 A core interest of social science is the study of stratification–inequalities in income, power, and prestige. Few persons would care about such inequalities if the poor, powerless, and despised were as happy and fulfilled as the wealthy, powerful, and admired. Social research often springs from humanistic empathy and concern as much as from scholarly and scientific curiosity. An economist might observe that black Americans are disproportionately poor, and investigate racial differences in education, employment, and occupation that account for disproportionate poverty. A table comparing additional income blacks and whites can expect for each additional year of education is thus as interesting in its own right as any dinosaur bone or photo of Saturn. However, something more than curiosity underscores our interest in the table. Racial differences in status and income are a problem in the human sense. Inequality in misery makes social and economic inequality personally meaningful. There are two ways social scientists avoid advocacy in addressing issues of social stratification. The first way is to resist projecting personal beliefs, values, and responses as much as possible, while recognizing that the attempt is never fully successful. The second way is by giving the values of the subjects an expression in the research design. Typically, this takes the form of opinion or attitude surveys. Researchers ask respondents to rate the seriousness of crimes, the appropriateness of a punishment for a crime, the prestige of occupations, the fair pay for a job, or the largest amount of money a family can earn and not be poor, and so on. The aggregate judgments, and variations in judgments, representthe values of the subjects and not those of the researcher. They are objective facts with causes and consequences of interest in their own right. This work is an effort to move methodology closer to human concerns without sacrificing the scientific grounds of research as such. The auth |

Sound Wormy: Memoir of Andrew Gennett, Lumberman $24.95 Set in what remains some of the wildest country in the United States, Sound Wormy recalls a time when regulations were few and resources were abundant for the southern lumber industry. In 1901 Andrew Gennett put all of his money into a tract of timber along the Chattooga River watershed, which traverses parts of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. By the time he wrote his memoir almost forty years later, Gennett had outwitted and outworked countless competitors in the southern mountains to make his mark as one of the region’s most seasoned, innovative, and successful lumbermen. His recollections of a rough-and-ready outdoors life are filled with details of logging, from the first “cruise” of a timber stand to the moment when the last board lies “on sticks” in the mill yard. He tells how massive poplars, oaks, and other hardwoods had to be felled and trimmed by hand, dragged down mountain slopes by draft animals, floated downstream or carried by rail to the mill, and then sawn, graded, and stacked for drying. He tells of buying timber rights in a land market filled with “sharp” operators, where titles and surveys were often contested and kinship and custom were on an equal footing with the law.Gennett saw more than potential “boardfeet” when he looked at a tree. He recalls, for instance, his efforts to convince the U.S. Forest Service to purchase undisturbed areas of wilderness at a time when its mandate was to condemn and buy up farmed-out and clear-cut land. One such sale initiated by Gennett would become the Joyce Kilmer Wilderness in North Carolina.Filled with logging lore and portraits of the southern mountains and their people, Sound Wormy adds an absorbing new chapter to the region’s natural and environmental history. |
