Market Research Online Surveys Australia – How to Maximise Your Response Rate
Market Research Online Surveys Australia
Online surveys are undoubtedly the most cost effective way to gather important data such as customer satisfaction and employee opinions. But how do you maximise your response rate? This is a problem incurred by most businesses undertaking online surveys and there is much literature available relating to the topic, all with varying facts and figures in relation to what response rate to expect, techniques for increasing responses, what length of survey should be used etc. Market Research Online Surveys Australia
The simple truth is that there is no single guideline to follow when undertaking an online survey, as each survey has its own set of variables affecting its response rate. However, there are some common techniques used to enhance the likelihood that a potential survey respondent will complete your questionnaire.
Having undertaken hundreds of online surveys of customers, employees, businesses, membership groups and event guests, I began recording survey response rates and the types of key variables likely to affect them. The variables recorded were:
- Whether survey invitations were personalised (i.e. Dear John Smith v Dear customer)
- Length of survey (categorised into completion times of 1-4 minutes, 5-9 minutes & 10+ minutes)
- If a reward/prize was offered
- Whether or not the survey was sent to people with a known interest in the survey subject (i.e. job related, previous customer, linked to social interests etc.)
The figures shown below were derived from the data of 143 online surveys, which were completed by a total of 49,335 respondents. As a general process, potential respondents were contacted twice via email to encourage participation in the online surveys.
Please note that the majority of respondents had submitted their details to various databases or were customers of my clients; therefore, it is likely that they were aware of the brand/company prior to receiving the online survey invitation. People sending email invites to random sub-sets of contacts should not expect to achieve response rates as high as those listed below.
Taking into account the 4 variables and their options, there were 24 possible combination’s – this will make sense when looking at the dot-points below. The combinations with the 5 highest and 5 lowest response rates have been listed.
5 highest response rates
- Personalised email & 1-4 minutes to complete & reward offered & respondents had a known interest in the survey subject = 45.3% average response rate
- Personalised email & 5-9 minutes to complete & reward offered & respondents had a known interest in the survey subject = 40.1% average response rate
- Non-personalised email & 1-4 minutes to complete & reward offered & respondents had a known interest in the survey subject = 39.8% average response rate
- Personalised email & 1-4 minutes to complete & no reward offered & respondents had a known interest in the survey subject = 39.2% average response rate
- Personalised email & 5-9 minutes to complete & no reward offered & respondents had a known interest in the survey subject = 38.4% average response rate Market Research Online Surveys Australia
5 lowest response rates
- Non-personalised email & 10+ minutes to complete & no reward offered & respondents did not have a known interest in the survey subject = 8.2% average response rate
- Non-personalised email & 10+ minutes to complete & reward offered & respondents did not have a known interest in the survey subject = 15.5% average response rate
- Personalised email & 10+ minutes to complete & no reward offered & respondents did not have a known interest in the survey subject = 16.2% average response rate
- Non-personalised email & 5-9 minutes to complete & no reward offered & respondents did not have a known interest in the survey subject = 19.4% average response rate
- Non-personalised email & 10+ minutes to complete & no reward offered & respondents had a known interest in the survey subject = 19.5% average response rate
So what works best?
The above findings show some clear correlations between response rates and the variables affecting them. As a general rule, it appears that the following actions should ensure that you gain the highest possible response rate when undertaking an online survey:
- Personalise your email invitations. People are more likely to respond to emails that address them by their name rather than ‘Dear Sir/Madam’, Dear Colleague’ or ‘Dear Customer’. If you have the names of potential survey respondents, use them! This is easily done using simple software such as Microsoft Word in a mail-merge format sent via your Outlook account. It links directly to your database, removing the burden of typing every single name into each email invitation.
- Keep the survey as short as possible. In most cases, the shorter the survey – the higher the response rate. Obviously some online surveys need to be in-depth and cannot avoid being 10+ minutes in length; however, try to avoid asking questions that only gather irrelevant information. This is a common crime amongst survey developers when preparing questions for an online survey.
- Offer a reward. Everybody loves getting something for free, so try and offer a reward when sending out online survey invitations. Some experts such as Kurt Knapton, Executive Vice President of e-Rewards Market Research, suggest that you are more likely to gain a higher response rate if you offer every respondent a small reward rather than a chance of winning a large sweepstakes prize. His study found that offering 4,000 people $2 each to complete a survey achieved a 19.3% response rate. Offering the same volume of people with an entry into a $2,500 sweepstakes draw only managed a 12.2% response rate.
- Find contacts that are likely to have an interest in the survey subject. This is no scientific discovery, but response rates are always going to be higher if the potential respondent has some interest in the survey subject. Job satisfaction surveys always gain high response rates because employees believe that their answers will influence beneficial changes. Likewise, repeat purchasers of a particular product/service will undoubtedly have more interest in a related online survey than someone who has only used it once or never at all. I Didn’t Divorce My Kids!: How Fathers Deal With Family Break-ups $37 Popular culture often portrays divorced fathers as deadbeats who have little interest in caring for the emotional, physical, and financial needs of their children. In the stereotype-shattering book, “I Didn’t Divorce My Kids!”, Gerhard Amendt presents the long-neglected plight of the divorced father who is plagued by grief and loneliness after being separated from his children. Based on surveys and in-depth interviews of thousands of such dads, Amendt reveals how fathers cope with trying to salvage their own lives while simultaneously maintaining relationships with their children after a painful divorce.Amendt’s incisive look at divided families also explores the impact that a single-parent household has on children’s well-being, criticizing the American tendency to over-pathologize normal reactions to familial upheaval. Even the most civilized of divorces, Amendt argues, can cause rage, sadness, potential health problems, and behavioral disturbances in otherwise well-adjusted children. The broad spectrum of experiences recounted in “I Didn’t Divorce My Kids!” will be essential reading for anyone interested in, or personally shaped by, the changing face of the modern family. |

Unemployment, Inequality and Poverty in Urban China $175 Although the Chinese economy is growing at a very high rate, there are massive social dislocations arising as a result of economic restructuring. Though the scale of the problem is huge, very few studies have examined the changes in income inequality in the late 1990s due to a lack of data on household incomes. Based on extensive original research, this book redresses this imbalance, examining the issue of unemployment and the problems it has brought for the people of China. Investigating the market outcomes in post-reform urban China, the book focuses on the relationships between unemployment, inequality, and poverty. In addition, the authors provide an analysis on the emerging urban labour market and its stratified structure, job mobility, profit sharing, and the role of social capital. Empirical analysis is supported by rich data from nationally representative urban household and rural migrant surveys, providing the latest picture of the widening inequality in Chinese urban society. |

Work, Female Empowerment and Economic Development $160 Accumulation of assets to enable the diversification of activities has been established as crucial in helping the rural poor escape poverty. The empowerment of women has been identified as a way to overcome inefficiencies in the allocation of resources within the family and so improve agrarian households’ productivity. However, achieving diversification is not necessarily empowering for women and some initiatives may worsen their position. This book uses the information collected in original household surveys conducted in rural areas in four countries to investigate the links between women’s position in the household, diversification strategies, labour market participation and poverty reduction. The book centres on country-specific chapters that provide an in-depth focus on an issue of relevance to the location and that tease out the interplay between female empowerment and development in that context. In particular, the chapters examine:Landlessness in EthiopiaFeminization of the agricultural labour market in Andhra Pradesh, IndiaFemale labour supply and women’s power within the household in UgandaDisadvantages faced by female-headed households in ZimbabweThe analysis calls for caution in assuming that labour market expansion necessarily acts to empower women and emphasizes the role female access to assets can have in facilitating diversification and escaping poverty. It will appeal to all those studying development economics, with particular interest in areas such as diversification, poverty and female empowerment. |

”Am I my brother’s keeper?” A historiography of twentieth century Black-Jewish relations. $49.99 Between 1920 and 2007, approximately one hundred articles and essays, twenty monographs, and six anthologies have been published on the intriguing relationship between Black and Jewish Americans. This body of scholarship is dense, wide-reaching, analytically sound, and is often times a reflection of changes in American history and society. This essay critically surveys the significant scholarship published on the relationships between African Americans and Jewish Americans during the twentieth century. This comprehensive historiography serves as a tool for exploring how various historical interactions between Blacks and Jews were influenced by the rules, conventions, and protocols of a broader American culture. By critically studying the intersection between race, class, economics, politics, education, and identity formation, I am better able to assess historical interactions between African Americans and Jewish Americans. Looking at the associations between these two historically marginalized groups we can better understand the implications of categories such as ethnicity on intercultural coalition building and how we can overcome barriers that have strained and divided Black-Jewish relations. |

”From every shires ende”: Chaucer and forms of nationhood. $49.99 Despite Geoffrey Chaucer’s longstanding reputation as the English nation’s first writer, his relation to the problem of nationhood has just begun to receive extensive critical attention. This dissertation clarifies the nature of Chaucer’s national imagination by drawing on recent developments in postcolonial critique, in particular the work of Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri. It argues that Chaucer’s concept of nationhood relies on his engagement with internationalism. It argues further that Chaucer finds the first possibilities for the concept in vernacular language and popular access to British history. The latter characteristically involves anachronism, a tool which, paradoxically, Chaucer uses to reshape the two fundamental components of his national ideals: sovereignty and domesticity. Chaucerian nationhood predates modern nationalism, but they cannot be divorced. The dissertation argues that nationhood can be better understood by comparing historically disparate forms.;The first chapter surveys nationhood’s place in Chaucer’s reception history. Chapter two considers his relation to thinkers like Dante, Marsilius of Padua and Nicole Oresme, and fourteenth-century politics. Chapter three argues that by imagining England as a national homeland in the Canterbury Tales’ General Prologue and frame narrative, Chaucer uses nationhood to understand why people participate in political community even when its costs outweigh its benefits. Chapter four exposes tensions between the Knight’s Tale’s imperial and national ambitions. Chapter five presents the Man of Law’s Tale and the Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale as complementary facets of the Matter of Britain. In its reading of the Man of Law’s Tale, English national sovereignty depends on anachronistic misreadings of Islam. Chapter five then argues that the Wife of Bath amends the Man of Law’s conception of sovereignty, rendering it a cross-class, cross-gender affair that extends expectations of love and continuity |

”History is bunk”: Historical memories at Henry Ford’s Greenfield Village. $49.99 In 1929, Henry Ford opened Greenfield Village, his outdoor history museum in Dearborn, Michigan. Fourteen years earlier, Ford announced that written history was bunk. The museum was designed to reshape the historical project by celebrating farmers and inventors in lieu of military heroes and politicians. Included among the structures were Thomas Edison’s Menlo Park Laboratory, Noah Webster’s home, and Ford’s Quadricycle shop. Ford used architecture and material culture to connect American progress to self-made manhood, middle-class domesticity, and the inventive spirit. Despite signs that the struggling automotive industry is responsible for Michigan’s economic decline, the site is popular—since 1976 over one million visitors have attended each year. This project examines this phenomenon, which exemplifies how publics often fail to link past and present in the same way that scholars do. The Village’s largely unexplored archives documenting its internal history are mined, along with primary and secondary sources on the histories of public history and the Detroit metropolitan-area. Chapter one studies the site’s construction and audiences during Ford’s presidency arguing that the populist public images of Ford and Edison mediated encounters with the Village. Chapter two links the site to the racial politics of the Detroit metro-area, which marked the Village as an alternative public space for whites. Chapter three draws on visitor surveys, to show how patrons’ worldviews were shaped by the politics of populist-conservativism. Chapter four explains how the appointment of an academic as president ensured the addition of progressive historical narratives, but the site’s location in Dearborn impeded efforts to draw a larger African American audience. In the mid-1990s, the fifth chapter contends, administrators successfully sought new patrons by blending progressive history and entertainment. This project argues that the Village is popular because it articulates both |

”It’s the journey”: Exploring the consequences of a professional development workshop for college astronomy faculty. $49.99 The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the range of consequences of a professional development workshop for two- and four-year college astronomy faculty. Its focus was how faculty participants chose to incorporate ideas and teaching strategies from the workshop with their own teaching ideas and practices. Data included pre- and post-workshop open-ended survey responses on teaching strategies from 126 faculty, follow-up online survey responses on reported teaching practices from forty-one faculty, semi-structured interviews and classroom observations with five faculty “heavy adopters” of the workshop teaching techniques, and surveys from their students. Analytical techniques used were both traditional, such as clustering, counting, and iterative descriptive coding (Miles and Huberman, 1994); as well as non-traditional, such as circle graphs (Aumann et al., 1999), and analysis of linguistic metaphors (Martin and Lueckenhausen, 2005). The main consequence of this study is that faculty development workshops can help support faculty as they create their own teaching path, and support their students in doing the same. Faculty participants reported incorporating workshop teaching strategies to their teaching practice following their participation. Interviews with and classroom observations with the five “heavy adopters” characterized how each individual retrofitted the techniques to suit his or her own teaching approaches, as revealed by their dominant teaching metaphor, as well as the metaphors used by their students to describe their classes. |

”Someone, anyone”: Contemporary theatre’s empathetic villain. $49.99 Over the course of theatre’s history, villains had stereotypical traits: revenge, greed, and power. Contemporary villains, though, evoke more empathy and sympathy from audiences than classic villains. In an effort to understand the roots of villainous behavior in contemporary characters, this thesis surveys a few notable classic villains to help compare the classic to the contemporary. While holding on to qualities of the classic stereotypes, contemporary playwrights create frequent moments of sympathy and empathy for villains who appeal to audiences’ desires to connect, justify, and understand the reasons for their villainies. This thesis investigates despicable yet empathetic villains in three plays: Tony Kushner’s Angels in America, Martin McDonagh’s The Beauty Queen of Leenane, and Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s Assassins. An analysis of the playwrights’ manipulation of characters and traits, as well as audience expectations, provides a theory on the new villain type and the lessons that can be learned. |

”There is always a path to success for every student:” Educator thinking patterns and inclusion at Parkview Primary Center*. $49.99 Since the passage of the landmark Education for All Handicapped Children Act (PL 94-142) in 1975, and its subsequent reauthorizations as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), increasing numbers of students with disabilities have been educated in regular K-12 classrooms every year. The move toward greater inclusion, however, has involved considerable controversy throughout its history. For decades, educators, policy makers, researchers, and advocates have debated what constitutes the least restrictive environment and appropriate degree of inclusion. Complicating the issue is the fact that many teachers, particularly general educators, have had serious misgivings about teaching students with disabilities in regular classes. These stem from a lack of adequate preparation and training for inclusion, and of administrative and collegial support, leading to the formation of negative beliefs about inclusion of these students.;Prior studies have identified characteristics of successfully inclusive schools, such as strong leadership and support from principals and special educators, a welcoming attitude toward students with disabilities on the part of general educators, and a flexible approach to student placement and teaching methods. Also, previous studies consistently show that educators who have strong critically reflective thinking skills, high-level epistemological beliefs (i.e., beliefs about knowledge and learning), and a high comfort level with inclusion are likeliest to create an inclusive school environment.;The present study’s purpose was to determine the degree to which teachers, paraeducators, and the principal at a diverse elementary school exhibit the essential cognitive variables for inclusion listed above, and the degree to which the staff display the characteristics identified as hallmarks of inclusive schools. Nine teachers, two paraeducators, and the principal completed surveys and interviews measuring their comfort level with |

”Whatever it means to you”: Ethnicity, language, and the survey response in telephone-administered health surveys of African Americans. $49.99 Many public health surveys match the race of telephone interviewers to the anticipated race of respondents. This practice may be particularly prevalent when surveying populations with a possible mistrust of health research, such as African Americans. Interviewer race effects have received little scientific evaluation in telephone-administered health surveys with African Americans, and no empirical studies have explored respondents’ preferences for interviewer race or the role of ethnic identity in survey interactions. These dynamics may have important implications for respondents’ experiences with health surveys and, ultimately, survey data. This dissertation reviewed the interviewer effects literature and considered the importance of interviewer-associated measurement error in public health surveys. It also described the results of two empirical studies. The first study explored African American telephone survey respondents’ preferences for interviewer race. This study found that respondents with Afrocentric, Black American, and Cultural Mistrust ethnic identity components preferred to interact with African American interviewers and that interviewer race was less important to respondents with Assimilated, Bicultural, or Multicultural identity components. Respondents’ preferences for being surveyed by an African American interviewer were stronger when a survey contained more racial content. The second study explored the influence of African American telephone interviewers’ ethnic identity types and the use of African American English (AAE) on the survey interaction. Interviewers with a Bicultural ethnic identity component may have been more prone to using AAE features during telephone surveys with African American respondents than interviewers with other identity components. Interviewers used AAE features less when engaged in recruitment tasks and appeared to have used them more when administering nonracial, sensitive survey items. No pattern emerged for use of AAE |

‘Almost knowing how to read’: Scribes as creative partners in Homeric transmission. $49.99 The ultimate origins of the Homeric texts are mysterious, despite centuries of theorizing. Although the textual transmission can be traced as far back as the medieval period, there is much disagreement about the nature of the texts and their transmission prior to that period. The present study endeavors to shed light on these issues through a close study of early papyri of Homer with a high degree of textual variation. Such papyrus texts, the majority of which are pre-150 BCE, tend to contain many readings that differ from the medieval vulgate, and are known for this reason as eccentric papyri. The first chapter of my study surveys various theories that have been put forward to explain the textual variation in early papyrus texts, and makes the case for my theory regarding the improvisational copying of certain passages. Chapter 2 examines Iliad papyrus 12, in which textual variants have a particular tendency to heighten the emotional appeal of speeches, always an essential feature of oral performance. In Chapter 3 I turn to Odyssey papyrus 31, in which variants are particularly abundant in passages that use the discourse marker autar to focus the narrative on the thoughts and actions of Odysseus. My conclusion argues that these variants, far from being the thoughtless products of incompetent copyists, make the poem both more Homeric and more Hellenistic and that my approach, which emphasizes the phenomenology of these variants rather than focusing on any particular reading, will be one of the most productive ways to interpret early textual variants of Homer as the field of Homeric studies moves forward. |

1 Chronicles $9.72 The Chronicler wrote as a pastoral theologian. The congregation he addressed was an Israel separated from its former days of blessing by a season of judgment. The books of 1 and 2 Chronicles bring a divine word of healing and reaffirm the hope of restoration to a nation that needed to regain its footing in God’s promises and to reshape its life before God.The Chronicler expounds the Bible as he knows it, skillfully weaving his commentary into the linear text of Israel’s history. His theme is straightforward–the promises of God revealed in the Davidic covenant are as trustworthy and as effective as the God who first uttered them.In two volumes Martin Selman provides an excellent interpretation of these sorely neglected yet profound books of the Old Testament. The first volume on 1 Chronicles provides a full introduction that surveys the Chronicler’s method, summarizes major theological themes and serves as a valuable entrée into the heart of the work we now know as 1 & 2 Chronicles. The original, unrevised text of this volume has been completely retypeset and printed in a larger, more attractive format with the new cover design for the series. |

100 Best Piano Classics $19.98 EMI’s 100 Best Piano Classics is a six-CD set focused on the standard keyboard repertoire of the Classical and Romantic eras. The most familiar names associated with piano music are represented here, including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Fr? d? ric Chopin, Franz Liszt, Ludwig van Beethoven, Sergey Rachmaninov, Claude Debussy, and many other celebrated composers who worked at the keyboard and wrote much of their best music for it. Included are great performances by illustrious pianists such as Martha Argerich, Sviatoslav Richter, Aldo Ciccolini, Emil Gilels, Maurizio Pollini, Christian Zacharias, and others who have had long and distinguished careers recording for EMI. The performances span several decades, but because specific years are not given in the tracklisting, experienced listeners may resort to educated guesswork, while everyone else must take the copyright dates 1988 to 2001 on faith as the range of recording sessions . As is usually the case with these multi-disc surveys, the sound is a little variable, but EMI has balanced the volume well enough that the whole set may be played comfortably at home without need of adjustments. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi |

12 Going on 29: Surviving Your Daughter’s Tween Years $40 Motivational speaker/mom Silvana Clark, in concert with her now-teenaged daughter Sondra, confirms in this book the confusion and possible unpleasantness tween girls and their moms around the world face in these sometimes-trying years. Through surveys and interviews with some 100 mother-daughter pairs, the Clarks show us what preteen girls are thinking and wanting, how mothers can successfully help their daughters navigate these years to avoid the potential minefields, and how they can successfully guide their daughters while keeping a respectful and loving relationship intact. The tween years—ages about 9 to 12—are a time when girls seem to grow astonishingly quickly toward establishing their independence and adult identity. It is a time of testing new feelings, thoughts, and behaviors, and can be a time of testing mom’s patience, persistence and energy. From cell phones to body piercings and hair dye, seductive clothes and strange boyfriends, girls want to test the waters and experience what the world has to offer. The good part is that (although they likely wouldn’t admit it) mothers remain the number one role model for girls at this age.
