BACKGROUND MATERIAL FOR TEACHERS, Old Testament Bible Survey Course, Genesis — Esther $19.22 BACKGOUND MATERIAL FOR TEACHERS, Book One, surveys the first seventeen Old Testament books for Bible teachers of youth and adults. Teachers must build a firm foundation for studying/teaching the Old Testament by answering ten questions:What is the Old Testament? Who wrote the Old Testament? Where, When, Why and How was the Old Testament written? What are three major features of the Old Testament: Revelation, Inspiration and Preservation? How should we study the Word of God? Why should you memorize the Word of God? When should one read the Word of God?Teachers must also build a personal knowledge through surveying the Old Testament utilizing four areas of study: INTRODUCTORY MATERIAL for the first two sections of the Old Testament; BACKGROUND INFORMATION about the author and book; “TEACHER’S STUDY GUIDE” for each of the 17 books; PRESENTATION MATERIAL for teachers [a teaching survey presented by a Scripture verse or passage].Following high school, a Bachelor of Science degree was received from Piedmont College, Demorest, GA plus a Georgia Teacher’s Professional Certificate. Then came the Army Security Agency and three years later came employment with the National Security Agency, Washington, DC. Meeting Edith Campen from North Carolina led to marriage, February 1, 1957.A year after marriage, God called me to the ministry. Graduating from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth, TX with a Bachelor of Divinity (updated to Masters of Divinity) and Masters in Religious Education (updated to Masters of Arts), God directed me to serve Him.For some 50 years, it was a pleasure to serve God and people in churches and classrooms as Minister of Youth, Minister of Education, Minister of Education/Administration, and Minister of Pastoral Care. To Everything There is a Season: Pete Seeger and the Power of Song $1.99 Author or coauthor of such legendary songs as “If I Had a Hammer,” “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” and “Turn, Turn, Turn,” Pete Seeger is the most influential folk singer in the history of the United States. In “To Everything There Is a Season”: Pete Seeger and the Power of Song, Allan Winkler describes how Seeger applied his musical talents to improve conditions for less fortunate people everywhere. This book uses Seeger’s long life and wonderful songs to reflect on the important role folk music played in various protest movements of the twentieth century.A tireless supporter of union organization in the 1930s and 1940s, Seeger joined the Communist Party, performing his songs with banjo and guitar accompaniment to promote worker solidarity. In the 1950s, he found himself under attack during the Red Scare for his radical past. In the 1960s, he became the minstrel of the civil rights movement, focusing its energy with songs that inspired protestors and challenged the nation’s patterns of racial discrimination. Toward the end of the decade, he turned his musical talents to resisting the war in Vietnam, and again drew fire from those who attacked his dissent as treason. Finally, in the 1970s, he lent his voice to the growing environmental movement by leading the drive to clean up the Hudson River. The book seeks to answer such fundamental questions as: What was the source of Seeger’s appeal? How did he capture the attention and affection of people around the world? And why is song such a powerful medium? Richly researched and crisply written, “To Everything There Is a Season”: Pete Seeger and the Power of Song is an ideal supplement for U.S. history survey courses, as well as twentieth-century U.S. history and history of American folk music courses. To purchase Pete Seeger songs discussed in the text, visit the following link for an iTunes playlist compiled by Oxford University Press: |

”Gaming” genre: Serious games, genre theory, and rhetorical action. $49.99 Despite recent increases in digital gaming research from rhetoric/composition scholars, there have been relatively few scholarly treatments of serious games as sites of rhetorical action and critique. In response to this gap, I argue for the need for rhetoric/composition scholars to start “paying attention” to serious games. The disciplinary frameworks of rhetorical studies, literacy studies, and communication are employed to survey the current literature on serious gaming and identify points of synthesis. I then introduce a more focused idea drawn from rhetorical studies, genre theory, to examine the question of why scholars in rhetoric/composition should pay attention to and focus their work on serious games. I conclude by discussing implications of the relationship between serious games and genre in various contexts, including implications for first-year composition pedagogies, digital rhetoric and new media pedagogies, and potential research projects and questions to be taken up by rhetoric/composition as a field. |

”Mrs. Lindsey, word problems CAN be fun!” How constructing authentic problems develop math language. $49.99 Research question. How does direct instruction on the structure of math word problems while students engage in collaborative group work to construct authentic word problems influence math learning?;(1) How does the use of academic language in student created word problems increase over time?;(2) How do students attitudes towards word problems change over the course of the intervention?;Research activities. Context: This intervention took placed in a self-contained 5th grade classroom at an urban K-6 school where the majority of the population was Hispanic. The class was composed of 25 students of which 17 were EL students ranging from Beginning to Advanced CELDT levels. Focus students were chosen based on CELDT, performance during the intervention, and attendance record during the intervention. Methods and data. The intervention occurred over six weeks with two distinct phases where students were given explicit instruction on word problems (phase one) and then created their own word problems in groups (phase two). Academic language was measured by baseline datum through student-constructed word problems, results showed only 12% of students correctly constructing word problems and properly using academic language, but outcome datum showed that 96% correctly constructed word problems using correct academic language. Student performance was measured pre and post by word problem drawn and adapted from the curriculum, Macmillan McGraw-Hill. Attitude data were collected through survey, student journaling, and observation notes. Engagement was monitored through teacher observation field notes. Results. When creating word problems the whole class, as well as all six focus students, improved their use of academic language. In attitude and engagement, all students in the class showed greater interest and demonstrated positive attitudes towards word problems. In survey questions about word problems, 14 students had no confidence in their ability of word problems. By the end |

”Teach us, don’t tell us”: Young adults with interfaith parents choose their religious and ethnic identities. $49.99 How do children of intermarriages involving one Jewish parent make sense of, experience and arrive at their identities? Are they torn between dissonant norms and expectations of their parents’ religious and ethnic heritages? Do they forge something new? Do they care? In the United States today, people are increasingly setting up households with partners of different backgrounds. The 2000/2001 National Jewish Population Survey (NJPS) found that half of marriages involving a Jewish partner were to a non-Jewish partner, a dramatic rise from the intermarriage rate of 13% in 1970 (NJPS 2000/2001, Fishman 2004). But what role does the identification of children of intermarriage play in the continuity of an ethnic or religious group if they can choose how they wish to identify? If boundaries of belonging are personally negotiable, rather then defined by tradition or doctrine, do they have meaning or must they transform and evolve with changes in society?;To address these questions and others, this study examined the religious and ethnic identities of young men and women at the transition to adulthood, ages 18–22, who are the children of one parent who was born Jewish and one parent who was not. The data for this qualitative interview-based study came from in-depth interviews with 30 young adults, 16 women and 14 men. Most of these young people were living in the Boston area.;Five distinguishing features characterize this study. First, this study places a discussion of religious and ethnic identity in the context of the larger sociological question of group cohesion and boundary construction. Second, it combined research on religious identity and intermarriage with theories of ethnicity, socialization, transmission of culture, and of cultural dissonance between agents of socialization. Third, although many studies of Jewish intermarriage in the United States have been conducted over the past half-century, few actually examined the children of intermarriage, particularly |

‘Getting to know your neighbor’: The efficacy of social networks in mixed-income housing. $49.99 In 1992 Congress launched the HOPE VI (Housing Opportunities for People Everywhere) program as a means of addressing concentrated urban poverty. One of the goals of the program is to replace severely distressed public housing projects, occupied exclusively by poor families, with redesigned mixed-income housing. Mixed-income housing is the latest trend in public housing. Whether it is through dispersal strategies using vouchers or planned developments this new strategy is becoming increasingly popular. One of the primary rationales for mixed-income housing is to counteract the negative effects associated with concentrated poverty and promote upward mobility for low-income families through the creation of social networks. A primary premise of the mixed-income approach is that neighbors will in fact interact so it is imperative in the wake of this popular model to examine what is actually taking place. Using qualitative and quantitative methods this dissertation explores the questions of (1) are people interacting? (2) If they do interact, are there social and economic benefits related to their interactions? I conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with 50 residents as well as a shorter survey with 100 residents at a HOPE VI site. Findings from this research demonstrated that neighbors did interact on some level and when they did, they frequently gained something from those interactions often in the form of some social control in the neighborhood. However, it is important to note that residents had few interactions with those of a dissimilar lifestyle, background, or life cycle and instead tended to form social relationships with neighbors more like themselves. Thus, interactions across class lines did not occur. This study has shown that at least in the short-term there have not been dramatic effects on individual outcomes for residents living in a mixed-income neighborhood. The neighborhood itself has improved with revitalization, the housing in the |

1749 in Europe: 1749 in Denmark, 1749 in England, 1749 in Great Britain, 1749 in Ireland, 1749 in Norway, 1749 English Cricket Season $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Events Arts and literature Births Full date unknown Deaths A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at In 1749 a large-scale census and statistical investigation was conducted in the Crown of Castile (15.000 places including Galicia and Andalusia, but not including the Basque provinces , Navarre or the Crown of Aragon ). It included population, territorial properties, buildings, cattle, offices, all kinds of revenue and trades, and even geographical information from each place. It was encouraged by king Fernando VI of Spain and his minister the Marquis of Ensenada , and is known today as the Catastro of Ensenada .The general answers of each place to the 40 questions of the Catastro produced a huge volume of documentation that affords historians an opportunity to analyze the economy, the society, the practices of the señorío system (manorialism ) and environmental data from 18th-century Spain. It is the best statistical register of the pre-statistical age of the Ancien Régime in Europe.Today the word catastro means “register of the properties”, but the etymology comes from “enquire”. In the 18th century there was a distinction between a catastro , which was made by central officers who traveled to the places to enquire, and the amillaramiento , which was made by local authorities. The single tax The Catastro originated in a proposal for a single tax (única contribución ), studied by 16 members of the Council of Castile , the Hacienda (Treasury ), the Indies (America), the Military Orders , five intendentes (first provincial authorities) and the head of the Barcelona Court. After receiving the negative opinion of Councils and the positive opinion of the intendentes , the king saw fit to begin the survey in the interest of the Crown and the |

A Companion to Art Theory $199.95 This survey of art theory in the context of Western visual art consists of 41 original essays written by experts in the field. Following an extensive introduction on the formation of modern art theory, the Companion is organized chronologically so that readers can trace developments of visual art theory, from Classical and Medieval sources and modern conceptions of art as they have been theorized since the Renaissance, through to some current theoretical preoccupations. In addition to outlining and describing various theoretical positions, the book’s chapters articulate some assumptions that underpin them and raise more general questions about the nature of theorizing about art. In this way the Companion provides both an introduction to main themes of Western art theory and a source for critical enquiry into the purposes, possibilities and limitations of theory in the context of artistic practice. The work can also be used alongside the three Art in Theory anthologies published by Blackwell, as a further art theory resource. |

A Grand and Bold Thing: An Extraordinary New Map of the Universe Ushering In A New Era of Discovery $0.01 LATE IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, what had been a fevered pace of discovery in astronomy for many years had slowed. The Hubble Space Telescope continued to produce an astonishing array of images, but the study of the universe was still fractured into domains: measuring the universe’s expansion rate, the evolution of galaxies in the early universe, the life and death of stars, the search for extrasolar planets, the quest to understand the nature of the elusive dark matter. So little was understood, still, about so many of the most fundamental questions, foremost among them: What was the overall structure of the universe? Why had stars formed into galaxies, and galaxies into massive clusters? What was needed, thought visionary astronomer Jim Gunn, recently awarded the National Medal of Science, was a massive survey of the sky, a kind of new map of the universe that would be so rich in detail and cover such a wide swath of space, be so grand and bold, that it would allow astronomers to see the big picture in a whole new way. So was born the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, a remarkable undertaking bringing together hundreds of astronomers and launching a new era of supercharged astronomical discovery, an era of “e-science” that has taken astronomy from the lonely mountaintop observatory to the touch of your fingertips. Critically acclaimed science writer Ann Finkbeiner tells the inside story of the Sloan and how it is revolutionizing astronomy. The Sloan stitched together images of deep space taken over the course of five years, providing a remarkably detailed, three-dimensional map of a vast territory of the universe, all digitized and downloadable for easy searching on a personal computer, and available not only to professional astronomers but to the public as well. Bringing together for the first time images of many millions of galaxies—including the massive structure known as the Sloan Great Wall of galaxies, never seen |

A History of American Architecture: Buildings in Their Cultural and Technological Context $32.43 Why did the Victorians drape their buildings in elaborately ornate decoration? Why was the Arts and Crafts movement so popular with the American middle class at the end of the 19th century? Why did Modernism replace traditional architectural styles after World War II? Mark Gelernter provides fresh answers to questions like these, convincingly showing how buildings express powerful cultural forces. Embodying deeply felt attitudes about fundamental issues, buildings express our relationship with nature, our social relations with others, the importance of the individual, the value of science and technology, and our political role in the world. He explains how designers sometimes expressed these ideas with available building technologies, while at other times they invented new technologies in order to realize new ideas. Each of the ten chronological chapters, accompanied by almost 300 photographs, drawings, and maps, begins with a broad survey of the dominant cultural forces and technologies, and then discusses how designers of the day responded with particular architectural forms. |

A Survey Of Statistical Network Models $85 Networks have found a prominent place in our everyday life. In science, networks have been used to analyze interpersonal social relationships, communication, academic paper co-authorships and citations, protein interaction patterns, and much more. Popular books on networks and their analysis began to appear a decade ago, and online “networking communities” such as Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn now include millions of people from around the world. Formal statistical modeling for the analysis of network data has emerged as a major research topic in diverse areas of study.A Survey of Statistical Network Models aims to provide the reader with an entry point to the voluminous literature on statistical network modeling. It guides the reader through the development of key stochastic network models, touches upon a number of examples and commonalities across different parts of the network literature, and discusses major schools of thought in static and dynamic network modeling. In addition, it illuminates the interconnections between existing models. Despite the rich and extensive network modeling literature, many statistical questions remain unanswered. It is hoped that the concluding discussion of gaps and challenges will help the interested reader deduce important future research directions. |

A Transition to Advanced Mathematics: A Survey Course $79.95 A Transition to Advanced Mathematics: A Survey Course promotes the goals of a &’grave;bridge” course in mathematics, helping to lead students from courses in the calculus sequence (and other courses where they solve problems that involve mathematical calculations) to theoretical upper-level mathematics courses (where they will have to prove theorems and grapple with mathematical abstractions). The text simultaneously promotes the goals of a &’grave;survey” course, describing the intriguing questions and insights fundamental to many diverse areas of mathematics, including Logic, Abstract Algebra, Number Theory, Real Analysis, Statistics, Graph Theory, and Complex Analysis. The main objective is "to bring about a deep change in the mathematical character of students — how they think and their fundamental perspectives on the world of mathematics." This text promotes three major mathematical traits in a meaningful, transformative way: to develop an ability to communicate with precise language, to use mathematically sound reasoning, and to ask probing questions about mathematics. In short, we hope that working through A Transition to Advanced Mathematics encourages students to become mathematicians in the fullest sense of the word.A Transition to Advanced Mathematics has a number of distinctive features that enable this transformational experience. Embedded Questions and Reading Questions illustrate and explain fundamental concepts, allowing students to test their understanding of ideas independent of the exercise sets. The text has extensive, diverse Exercises Sets; with an average of 70 exercises at the end of section, as well as almost 3,000 distinct exercises. In addition, every chapter includes a section that explores an application of the theoretical ideas being studied. We have also interwoven embedded reflections on the history, culture, and philosophy of mathematics throughout the text. |

A World Without Ice $0.9 A cowinner of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize offers a clear-eyed explanation of the planet’s imperiled ice. Much has been written about global warming, but the crucial relationship between people and ice has received little focus-until now. As one of the world’s leading experts on climate change, Henry Pollack provides an accessible, comprehensive survey of ice as a force of nature and the potential consequences as we face the possibility of a world without ice.A World Without Ice traces the effect of mountain glaciers on supplies of drinking water and agricultural irrigation, as well as the current results of melting permafrost and shrinking Arctic sea ice-a situation that has degraded the habitat of numerous animals and sparked an international race for seabed oil and minerals. Catastrophic possibilities loom, including rising sea levels and subsequent flooding of low-lying regions worldwide. A World Without Ice answers our most urgent questions about this pending crisis, laying out the necessary steps for managing the unavoidable and avoiding the unmanageable. |

A case study of the digital divide: A study of teacher awareness and efforts to bridge the gap in underserved communities. $69 The purpose of this research was to examine the digital divide as it relates to teacher perceptions regarding the importance of narrowing the technology gap for low-income and minority students. This research was a replication of a study conducted by Wilson in 2002. The original study questioned whether teachers were aware of the term digital divide and how closely their definitions coincided with the review of literature. This present study sought to underscore the awareness levels of teachers regarding the problems associated with the digital divide and to bring their perceptions to light on a community-level basis. Descriptive statistics were used to illustrate teachers’ responses to survey questions. Out of the 41 surveys that were distributed, 21 teachers responded, many of whom were female. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to support the following conclusions: (a) most educators were unaware of the term digital divide, (b) all respondents agreed or strongly agreed that technology use in the classroom increased student motivation, (c) all respondents agreed or strongly agreed that technology enhanced learning, (d) few teachers at the school site reported using technology on a daily basis for instructional purposes, (e) most respondents agreed that guidance in how to integrate technology into daily lesson planning was needed, (f) most educators cited time constraints as being a large barrier to true technology integration in the curricula, and (g) many of those studied would have liked to have seen more technical support from the school district. The review of literature supported the idea that staff development plays an essential role in determining teacher performance within individual classrooms. Evidence points to the fact that without proper training and adequate support, teaching practices would fail to meet the technology needs of at-risk students, most of whom are minorities from economically impoverished neighborhoods. A community intervention strategy to increase immigrant youth resilience. $49.99 In institutions of higher learning across Arizona, undocumented students often go unnoticed. Many of these students were brought into the U.S. as young children and many have graduated from Arizona high schools. Arizona’s Proposition 300, implemented in 2007, has impacted undocumented students by denying them state sponsored financial aid and in-state classification for tuition. This has resulted in a growing concern as to how undocumented students and college staff are going to deal with this mandate. In this study, the following two research questions were developed to investigate this issue: (1) How will this mandate impact undocumented students’ lives?; and, (2) What are the obstacles these individuals will face when they can no longer afford a higher education? Using an action research approach, a website was created to provide the undocumented students as well as the community information about Proposition 300, college access and resources available. Data were collected through administration web statistics, a 42 question survey, blog postings and follow-up interviews. The website was open to any interne user, which allowed people from various geographic locations to participate. Quantitative analyses gathered from website statistics indicated significant activity from participants. The total number of website visits from participants was 752, viewing 3,310 total pages and averaging 6:44 minutes per visit. Participants visited the website from various locations throughout the U.S. and from Mexico and Puerto Rico. Of the participants (n = 299), many indicated they were female, students and Hispanic. Most participants found the website useful and confirmed high resilience characteristics and, due to the website, felt optimistic about their educational future. A comprehensive examination of the determinants and consequences of political trust among Latinos. $69 Political trust is an important concept in a representative democracy because it defines citizens’ expectations of their elected officials, their willingness to allow government to act on their behalf, and the quality of democratic accountability. Distrust, or when government outcomes fail to meet citizens’ expectations, has been linked to discontent and disaffection, and to a broad decline in the legitimacy of government institutions.;Research consistently shows that Latinos are more trusting than non-Latinos—a finding which seems discordant in light of the socio-economic and cultural differences between these groups. The concept of expectations is especially interesting and useful in examining differences in levels of political trust among Latinos and non-Latinos. The literature on Latino trust lacks any comprehensive analysis of the determinants and consequences of political trust among Latinos.;This dissertation attempts to answer the following questions: What are the determinants of political trust among Latinos? Why are Latinos more trusting of government than non-Latinos? What impact does political trust have on Latino policy preferences and vote choice? Utilizing survey data of Californians, evidence I find that acculturation and country-of-origin variables account for differences between Latinos and non-Latinos, and that socio-economic variables do not. Latinos of Mexican origin are less trusting that other Latinos. Political trust has a negative impact of Latino support for health care reform, but no impact on non-Latino policy preferences in this area. Once again, trust impacts Mexican and non-Mexican Latinos differently. Finally, I confirm the positive relationship between political trust and voting for an incumbent (the negative relationship between trust and support for a major or minor party challenger); this relationship is constant across Latino and non-Latino groups. |

A descriptive quantitative study of credit union succession planning. $69 The purpose of the descriptive quantitative study was to identify whether or not, and to what degree, succession planning was occurring in credit unions affiliated with the Filene Research Institute’s Research Council and Filene i3 work group. The study involved an online survey, the Credit Union Succession Planning Survey, developed and pilot tested as a part of the study. Forty respondents participated in the study, for an overall response rate of 39.6%. The analysis included frequency counts for responses, determining the mean and standard deviation, and calculating the Spearman correlation coefficients based on the participants’ demographics and the survey questions. The survey results found that 70% of the credit union leaders who responded indicated their organizations have succession plans in place. The key positions for these credit unions included the chief executive officer/president, financial executive, and operations executive. The number of these positions included in the succession plan ranged from one to five (M = 3.59, SD = 1.73). The findings showed that both large credit unions, those over {dollar}500 million in assets, and small credit unions, those under {dollar}500 million in assets, lacked succession plans. Study recommendations included: (a) that credit union leaders begin looking at employees skills on a long-term basis, 6-10 years from now; (b) to include positions beyond executives in succession plans by providing retention, recruitment, and potential successors for any key position in the organization; (c) the recommendation to the NCUA, as the regulator of credit unions, is to address the issue of succession planning separately from the CAMEL rating; and (d) further exploration of credit union succession planning with emphasis on a broader population to see if the results of the study’s small population match the results from a broader credit union population. |

A descriptive study for improving communications through the FBI intranet redesign. $49.99 Prior to September 11, 2001, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was criticized for lack of communication within the Bureau and with other Federal agencies. The Director established internal communication as one of the priorities within the Bureau and recommended the use of information technology as the solution. The purpose of this quantitative descriptive study was to investigate the factors that were instrumental in successfully meeting the internal communication needs of the FBI as indicated by users’ satisfaction levels of the intranet redesign. The Office of Public Affairs conducted interviews that found that the intranet was one area that needed a change in an effort to improve communication. Prior research found that the involvement of users in the redesign processes had a positive influence on the functionality and usability of the intranet.;A quantitative descriptive survey research methodology was employed to explore the factors of the intranet redesign that helped to improve user satisfaction of the FBI. A survey technique was used to gather information from a sample population of 910 employees. This sample was selected using a purposeful, randomized sampling method. This research used a Likert-type questionnaire instrument developed by Foresee Results Inc. using the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), which had been thoroughly tested for validity and reliability (Merz, 2008).;The present findings confirmed that the involvement of users within the redesign process positively influence the redesign of the FBI Intranet. The findings also concluded a significant relationship between changes to the intranet and executive leadership’s commitment to the redesign. The results indicated overall user satisfaction with the intranet redesign and the use of intranet as an effective tool to communicate within the Bureau. The researcher recommended that the results of the open-ended questions be reviewed and categorized with usable data for future |

A mixed methods portrait of urban instrumental music teaching. $49.99 The purpose of this mixed methods study was to learn about the ways that instrumental music teachers in Chicago navigate the urban landscape. The design of the study most closely resembles Creswell and Plano Clark’s (2007) two-part Triangulation Convergence Mixed Methods Design, with the addition of an initial exploratory focus group component. Phase 1 of the study included a focus group composed of urban instrumental music teachers (N = 7) that informed the development of the survey questionnaire. Phase 2 of the study involved a survey of instrumental music teachers in the Chicago Public Schools (N = 90). Phase 3 of this study was based on interviews with and observations of 4 selected instrumental music teachers within the Chicago Public Schools. The reason for collecting both quantitative and qualitative data was to corroborate results and paint a more comprehensive portrait of urban instrumental music teaching.;Research questions focused on the contextual knowledge that teachers hold regarding their students and communities, the specialized skills they rely upon to be successful, the attitudes and beliefs they hold towards teaching instrumental music in an urban school, and the challenges and rewards that they perceive from teaching in this context. Of the 22 instances where quantitative and qualitative data aligned to address the same phenomenon, there were 11 instances where the methods confirmed one another, 1 instance where the methods contradicted one another, 4 instances where the data provided mixed convergence, and 6 categories where the methods did not directly confirm or contradict one another but rather enhanced the general understanding of the phenomenon. The results suggest that instrumental music teachers utilize their knowledge of the urban context to modify their general pedagogical approach, that they believe a specialized set of skills is required for success in the urban context, that they have relatively positive levels of job satisfaction |

A mixed methods study of behavioral changes based on a course in agroecology. $49.99 This study described and evaluated student perceptions of a course in the area of agroecology. Specifically, this study was designed to determine if participants experienced changed perceptions and behaviors resulting from the Agroecosystems Analysis Course.;Research questions were addressed via a triangulation validating quantitative data mixed methods approach, with a written survey comprised of both quantitative and open-ended questions serving as the evaluation document. Qualitative data garnered from the 2001-2007 Agroecosystems Analysis daily evaluations were also analyzed to locate and categorize central factors essential for the development of an experiential learning environment (N=140).;Study participants consisted of students and instructors who participated in Agroecosystems Analysis. A matched study design method was utilized, with matched subjects serving as the control group to assist in the formation of baseline comparisons (N=66).;Quantitative responses were collected and analyzed statistically using item analysis and ANCOVA. Qualitative responses were coded in accordance with grounded theory research practices. Although there was no significant difference between the responses of the course participants and the control group, five causal conditions were identified as playing a major role in creating an experiential environment more conducive to behavior change: hands-on experience, emotional response, human interaction, self-efficacy, and intensity of experience. These causal conditions formed the initial grounded theory model.;Based on the research conclusions, five additional causal conditions were added to create a more comprehensive, effective model for creating an agricultural environment more conducive to experiential learning: length of course, appropriateness and rigor of curriculum, learner-centered curriculum, ongoing education, and metacognitive processes. A new tool to measure the relationship between health-related quality of life and workforce productivity. $49.99 Quality of life and productivity are two important measures in health outcomes that usually require the use of self-reported surveys for accurate assessment. Measuring health-related quality of life (HRQOL) has been established as an important field in the past century, and many psychometrically validated instruments exist for both general and specific population use. Another health measure that has attracted a significant amount of attention in recent years, although there is no gold standard, is that of workforce productivity. Most productivity studies measure the amount of work loss incurred by employees in the form of absenteeism and presenteeism.;A new survey that combines questions from existing HRQOL and workforce productivity surveys, the Health-Related Quality of Life and Work Productivity Questionnaire (HQWP), was constructed and tested using a descriptive, cross-sectional study of faculty and staff at a major research university. As expected, HRQOL and work loss were found to be negatively correlated. In addition, staff were found to have statistically higher levels of absenteeism than faculty, but faculty had higher levels of presenteeism. Using multivariate regression models on several measures of productivity, including both absenteeism and presenteeism, we concluded that mental health measures were stronger predictors of productivity than physical health measures for our overall sample, as well as faculty and staff groups separately. In addition, those who work extra hours to make up for lost production had significantly lower social function scores compared to those who do not. Other statistical analyses performed include PCA factor analyses on presenteeism covariates. Lastly, we performed economics analyses on the cost savings that could be achieved through health management programs to reduce absenteeism and presenteeism levels.;A better understanding of reasons for absenteeism and presenteeism could help inform targeted workplace programs to |

The aerospace industry is a dynamic industry that requires continual skill updates to keep up with advancements in technology and operational trends within the industry. The purpose of this study was to examine intellectual capital requirements of selected professional positions within the Boeing Company in Oklahoma. Data obtained through interviews was used to determine if educational skills gaps existed. The findings of the study can be used to develop an aerospace educational pipeline based on collaborative relationships between industry and higher education to facilitate educational and training programs. Three broad research questions were used to address and support the findings of this study related to educational background, career progression, and gaps. A purposive sample of 10 professional positions was selected for interview using an interview guide containing 18 questions. Data was analyzed using manual coding techniques.;Findings and conclusions. The study found that minimum education requirements for selected professional positions consisted of a bachelor’s degree. Although the majority of participants identified a business degree as optimal, several participants indicated that an education background from multiple disciplines would provide the greatest benefit. Data from interviews showed educational degrees were not specialized enough and skills required to perform job functions were obtained through direct on the job experience or through corporate training. Indications from participant responses showed employees with a thorough knowledge of government acronyms had a decided advantage over those that did not. Recommendations included: expanding the study to multiple organizations by conducting a survey; expanding industry and academic partnerships; establishing a structured educational pipeline to fill critical positions; creating broad aerospace curricula degree programs tailored |

A study of the relationship of three social activities and an individual’s extrinsic career success. $69 Individuals are discovering that they are now operating in a business environment different then in the past. In order to achieve extrinsic career success in this new environment, employees are finding that they need to learn and implement nontraditional business skills. The purpose of this study was to investigate if there was a relationship between participating in certain social activities and achieving extrinsic career success through the use of nontraditional business skills. The specific activities reviewed were sporting activities, volunteer activities, and drinking activities. The nontraditional business skills identified in the study were the use of networking, mentoring, political skills, and social skills. This research was conducted using a quantitative study employing an online survey. The survey consisted of four-point Likert-style questions concluding with three open-ended questions. There were 114 usable surveys which provided the data for this research study. Frequency analysis, regression analysis, and the test of independent means were the different analyses used to analyze the survey responses. There were five primary conclusions drawn from this research study. Several conclusions centered around the small amount of time spent on the three social activities and their moderate impact on career success highlighting specific activities which were of more value. Several other findings focused on the moderate impact on career success of attending social activities with work colleagues and that if more time were spent attending these functions, and using nontraditional business skills, additional career benefits would be possible. The last finding was that adjusted R2 values were consistently generated during regression analysis, albeit with small values all below .10. As the sole determinant of career success, this is not a good predictor; however, as a compliment to traditional skills, this is an important finding. Participating in these activities |

Abducted: How People Come to Believe They Were Kidnapped by Aliens $19 They are tiny. They are tall. They are gray. They are green. They survey our world with enormous glowing eyes. To conduct their shocking experiments, they creep in at night to carry humans off to their spaceships. Yet there is no evidence that they exist at all. So how could anyone believe he or she was abducted by aliens? Or want to believe it? To answer these questions, psychologist Susan Clancy interviewed and evaluated “abductees”—old and young, male and female, religious and agnostic. She listened closely to their stories—how they struggled to explain something strange in their remembered experience, how abduction seemed plausible, and how, having suspected abduction, they began to recollect it, aided by suggestion and hypnosis. Clancy argues that abductees are sane and intelligent people who have unwittingly created vivid false memories from a toxic mix of nightmares, culturally available texts (abduction reports began only after stories of extraterrestrials appeared in films and on TV), and a powerful drive for meaning that science is unable to satisfy. For them, otherworldly terror can become a transforming, even inspiring experience. “Being abducted,” writes Clancy, “may be a baptism in the new religion of this millennium.” This book is not only a subtle exploration of the workings of memory, but a sensitive inquiry into the nature of belief. |

About to Die: How News Images Move the Public $14.16 Due to its ability to freeze a moment in time, the photo is a uniquely powerful device for ordering and understanding the world. But when an image depicts complex, ambiguous, or controversial events-terrorist attacks, wars, political assassinations–its ability to influence perception can prove deeply unsettling. Are we really seeing the world “as it is” or is the image a fabrication or projection? How do a photo’s content and form shape a viewer’s impressions? What do such images contribute to historical memory? About to Die focuses on one emotionally charged category of news photograph–depictions of individuals who are facing imminent death–as a prism for addressing such vital questions. Tracking events as wide-ranging as the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, the Holocaust, the Vietnam War, and 9/11, Barbie Zelizer demonstrates that modes of journalistic depiction and the power of the image are immense cultural forces that are still far from understood. Through a survey of a century of photojournalism, including close analysis of over sixty photos, About to Die provides a framework and vocabulary for understanding the news imagery that so profoundly shapes our view of the world. |

Academic diversity in Rhode Island middle schools: Teacher beliefs about instructional practice. $49.99 National and state data indicate that the majority of schools continue to struggle in reaching the goal of 100% academic proficiency for all students (Campbell, Hombo, & Mazzeo, 2000; Information Works! , 2005, 2006). Experts in the area of meeting the needs of diverse learners have offered opinions about how teacher belief systems influence curricular, instructional, and assessment practices. Teacher practices significantly impact student performance providing evidence that it is the failure to effectively differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, preventing schools from meeting accountability targets (Marzano, 2003; Tomlinson, 2005; Tomlinson & Allan, 2002). The purpose of this research study was to identify the degree to which the literature base and Rhode Island regulations have influenced the belief structures of middle level educators and how those belief systems drive the instructional practices of teachers in Rhode Island middle schools. The study was guided by three research questions, including: (a) What do middle school practitioners in RI believe about the nature and needs of middle school learners, and what do those beliefs foreshadow for academically diverse students? (b) To what degree do middle school educators appear to understand, plan for, and engage students in developmentally appropriate practices likely to address the wide range of academic readiness, interests, and learning profiles inevitable in middle level populations? (c) Are there differences between teachers’ beliefs and instructional practices with respect to teacher certification type? The mixed methods design consisted of a survey containing closed questions and one focus group discussion. The research was conducted using purposeful, stratified sampling procedures, to elicit responses from (N=107) teachers in (N=5) middle schools. Descriptive statistical analyses were used to determine the ways in which the current best practices for meeting the needs of |

Administrative Reform $31.61 What is administrative reform? How is it differentiated from other kinds of social reform? Who are administrative reformers and how do they approach their task? And who benefits and who suffers from it? Does a theory of administrative reform exist? A survey of published research on administrative reform reveals that satisfactory answers to these questions are handicapped by methodological and theoretical shortcomings. There are no common definitions, no agreement over content, no selected boundaries, no clear links with the wide phenomenon of social reform, no firm hypothesis tested by empirical findings, and no continuous dialogue between practitioners and theorists. This book is the first comprehensive and systematic treatment of the subject for professionals and students in the fields of public and private administration. It carefully examines the diverse interdisciplinary literature on the subject and identifies and develops the most promising approaches towards a unified theory. Caiden shows how the study of administrative reform can contribute substantially to the development of administrative theory, and constructs a working definition of the phenomenon of administrative reform, distinguishing it from social change and from administrative change. The practical use of this definition is tested by the analysis of various case histories of administrative cultures of different periods in history, from which a common cycle of reform processes is discerned. The author follows with a detailed examination of the processes themselves. The book concludes with a discussion of the obstacles to reform and a review of the author’s findings and conclusions. |
