50 Years of Integer Programming 1958-2008: From the Early Years to the State-of-the-Art $99 In 1958, Ralph E. Gomory transformed the field of integer programming when he published a short paper that described his cutting-plane algorithm for pure integer programs and announced that the method could be refined to give a finite algorithm for integer programming. In January of 2008, to commemorate the anniversary of Gomory’s seminal paper, a special session celebrating fifty years of integer programming was held in Aussois, France, as part of the 12th Combinatorial Optimization Workshop. This book is based on the material presented during this session.50 Years of Integer Programming offers an account of featured talks at the 2008 Aussois workshop, namely- Michele Conforti, Gérard Cornuéjols, and Giacomo Zambelli: Polyhedral Approaches to Mixed Integer Linear Programming- William Cook: 50+ Years of Combinatorial Integer Programming – Francois Vanderbeck and Laurence A. Wolsey: Reformulation and Decomposition of Integer Programs It includes a DVD containing a recording of the three original lectures as well as a panel discussion with six pioneers. The book contains reprints of key historical articles together with new introductions and historical perspectives by the authors: Egon Balas, Michel Balinski, Jack Edmonds, Ralph E. Gomory, Arthur M. Geoffrion, Alan J. Hoffman & Joseph B. Kruskal, Richard M. Karp, Harold W. Kuhn, and Ailsa H. Land & Alison G. Doig.It also contains written versions of survey lectures on six of the hottest topics in the field by distinguished members of the integer programming community: – Friedrich Eisenbrand: Integer Programming and Algorithmic Geometry of Numbers- Raymond Hemmecke, Matthias Köppe, Jon Lee, and Robert Weismantel: Nonlinear Integer Programming- Andrea Lodi: Mixed Integer Programming Computation- Francois Margot: Symmetry in Integer Linear Programming- Franz Rendl: Semidefinite Relaxations for Integer Programming - |

A Guide For The Implementation And Use Of Chloramines $158.4 Chloramination of drinking water is not a new technology. Some water utilities have successfully used chloramines for over 40 years; other utilities have experienced problems including nitrification, stimulation of biological growth, an inability to maintain adequate chlorine residuals, and customer complaints about the taste and/or odor of the water. Today, many utilities are considering chloramines as a secondary disinfectant within their distribution system, primarily as an economical method to meet ever more stringent disinfection byproduct limits. The primary purpose of this project was to develop material that could be used as a concise and practical guidance manual for those responsible for chloramination at water works facilities.A survey was conducted by mail of 63 public water systems that use chloramines. Telephone interviews were used as a follow-up to clarify information and gain additional insight into daily operations. Thirteen utilities were selected for an in-depth on-site visit to establish today’s best operating practice for chloramination. These results were compared against a review of the current pertinent literature. Finally, a user’s guide was compiled for those implementing or using chloramines |

A History Of Philosophy $39.62 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:In contrast with this external method of pronouncing sentence, the scientific history of philosophy must place itself upon the standpoint of immanent criticism, the principles of which are two: formal logical consistency and intellectual fruitfulness. Every philosopher grows into a certain set of ideas, and to these his thinking remains bound, and is subjected in its development to psychological necessity. Critical investigation has to settle how far it has been possible for him to bring the different elements of his thinking into agreement with each other. The contradiction is almost never actually present in so direct a form that the same thing is expressly maintained and also denied, but always in such a way that various positions are put forward which, only by virtue of their logical consequences, lead to direct contradiction and really irreconcilable results. The discovery of these discrepancies is formal criticism; it frequently coincides with pragmatic explanation, for this formal criticism has been performed in history itself by the successors of the philosopher in question, and has thus determined for them their problems. Yet this point of view alone is not sufficient. As purely formal it applies without exception to all attested views of a philosopher, but it gives no criterion for decision on the question, in what the philosophical significance of a doctrine really consists. For it is often the case that philosophy has done its work just in conceptions which must by no means be regarded as in themselves perfect or free from contradiction; while a multitude of individual convictions, which there is no occasion to oppose, must remain unnoticed in a corner, so far as our historical survey is concerned. In the history of philosophy great errors are weightier |

A Literary Guide to the Bible; A Study of the Types of Literature Present in the Old and New Testaments $19.99 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:Chapter IV HISTORY SECTION i: THE CHARACTER OF HISTORICAL WRITING Two points should be noted at the outset in the discussion of history as a type of literature in the Bible. This is the day when the historical method of study of the Biblical text is recognized as fundamental by all real scholars. No longer is it considered reasonable to make up a system of theology by wrenching texts away from their historical setting and putting them together like pieces in a puzzle; all texts to be understood rightly must be considered in their context against the background of the age in which they were written. This of course has resulted in some revisions of ideas concerning the meaning of certain passages. To the naturally conservative this change has sometimes seemed to indicate destruction, whereas really the historical method has meant a nearer approach to the original meaning, and advancement in our understanding of the messages of the Bible. To know, for example, that the second part of the book of Isaiah was written more than a hundred years later than the first part, by an entirely different man, under entirely different circumstances, does not detract in the least from the divine inspiration which gripped and held both men and made them see visions and draw pictures of the future quite unparalleled; and it does help us very materially in understanding, for instance, the references to Cyrus and the significance of the wonderful imagery of “the Suffering Servant.” But the point is that such historical study of the Bible which to-day is recognized as fundamental in all scholarly approach, does not mean that the books are books of history. As we shall see before we have finished this survey of the literature of the Bible, a great proportion ofthem are poetry and must be |

A Survey Of The Woman Problem $19.99 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:MOTHERHOOD AND CULTURE It will always be a clumsy proceeding to apply the method of averages to an individual in order to trace out the lines of his development or to decide a priori the limitations of his nature. But having conceded that the majority-type of the female sex differs in nature from that of the male, one must set forth the consequences of this phenomenon. In doing so, generalisations drawn from the average are unavoidable; but be it premised that every generalisation is to be received with caution, because the scope of its application is only in breadth, not in depth. The more general an assertion is, the more general must be its application. For example : it may be said that woman is the child-bearing part of mankind; but when one proceeds to the formula, ” the vocation of woman is to become a mother,” one oversteps the bounds of the generalisation, in that a new idea—that of vocation—is introduced, from which individual constituents cannot be eliminated. With this reservation, then, we concede that the female majority-type is not the equal of the male either in intellect or in strength of will. As to the causes of this, opinions are strongly opposed. They are sought on the one hand in environment, in education, and in the consequences of a subjection which has lasted for thousands of years; on the other hand,in the predestined nature and calling of woman and the limitations appertaining to motherhood. These limitations are innate, according to this view; they are involved by the burden of motherhood; but according to the opposite theory man, not Nature, is responsible for making motherhood into a drag-chain interfering with the spiritual and intellectual development of the female sex. The influence of environment and education and of the |

A case study of leadership characteristics of teacher leaders in an urban literacy program. $49.99 This dissertation study used a case study method to determine the perceived important leadership characteristics of seven teacher leaders serving as literacy specialists in a Reading First initiative in a Midwestern urban district. The researcher used a self-survey instrument and focus group interview to gather the reflections of the teacher leaders on their perceptions of important leadership characteristics for their current roles. Peer teachers and administrators reported their observations through use of a separate survey. The researcher was able to determine, by using the combined data from these data collection methods, that four leadership characteristics were deemed to be important for these teacher leaders. These characteristics include: (a) Consideration—building personal relationships, (b) Tolerance and Freedom—sharing the leadership and decision-making, (c) Initiation of Structure—accepting the leadership challenge and holding peer teachers to high standards, and (d) Demand Reconciliation—dealing with conflicting demands. This research report also includes how and when these important characteristics are employed in the daily work of the teacher leaders. Recommendations are made for the participating district in their selection criteria and possible training of current and future teacher leaders. Finally, additional topics for research concerning teacher leadership characteristics are presented. |

A comparison of grid-based techniques for Navier-Stokes fluid simulation in computer graphics. $49.99 Fluid simulation is becoming increasingly common in the film industry and in computer games, however, understanding and implementing a numerical solution to the Navier-Stokes equation can be a daunting task. In this thesis we present an introduction to fluid simulation in computer graphics with a full derivation of the compressible and incompressible Navier-Stokes equation from Newton’s Second Law, explaining concepts such as pressure and viscosity as they are derived. We also present a survey and comparison of four different methods for solving the advection equation: a simple 1st order differencing method, a 4 th order QUICK scheme, the popular semi-lagrangian method, and the PIC & FLIP particle based methods. We present these advection scheme comparisons in a series simplified 1D channel plots, and a set of 2D fluid animations. Based on these results, we classify algorithms as stable or unstable, and discuss methods to prevent divergence in unstable solvers. |

A comparison of the aptitude and attitude of college students toward social and technical computer technology. $49.99 The purpose of this study was to investigate college students’ technical and social technology competencies based upon their attitudes toward computers and their perception of technical computer knowledge. The participants for this investigation were college undergraduates majoring in apparel merchandising and design and other related and non-related majors at the University of Arkansas. The research model selected for use in this study was the survey design method. There were a total of 1270 students responding to the survey with 1052 usable surveys remaining after cleaning the data for missing entries. This constituted an 83% response rate. The findings included significant effects of social aptitude by age and major, and technical aptitude by major. Males had significantly higher perceptions of technical aptitude, and both social and technical attitude toward computer technology than females. Whites had significantly higher perceptions of social aptitude toward computer technology than Nonwhites. Class standing had no significant effect on college student’s perceptions of either aptitude or attitude in social or technical computer technology. There were strong correlations between social aptitude and technical aptitude and social attitude and technical attitude. Colleges and universities as well as industry are taking advantage of social technology not only for recruitment but in the classroom and on the job as well. A strong relationship between social and technical aptitude and social and technical attitude would tend to indicate that students are ready for this type of interaction. |

A descriptive study for improving communications through the FBI intranet redesign. $49.99 Prior to September 11, 2001, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was criticized for lack of communication within the Bureau and with other Federal agencies. The Director established internal communication as one of the priorities within the Bureau and recommended the use of information technology as the solution. The purpose of this quantitative descriptive study was to investigate the factors that were instrumental in successfully meeting the internal communication needs of the FBI as indicated by users’ satisfaction levels of the intranet redesign. The Office of Public Affairs conducted interviews that found that the intranet was one area that needed a change in an effort to improve communication. Prior research found that the involvement of users in the redesign processes had a positive influence on the functionality and usability of the intranet.;A quantitative descriptive survey research methodology was employed to explore the factors of the intranet redesign that helped to improve user satisfaction of the FBI. A survey technique was used to gather information from a sample population of 910 employees. This sample was selected using a purposeful, randomized sampling method. This research used a Likert-type questionnaire instrument developed by Foresee Results Inc. using the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), which had been thoroughly tested for validity and reliability (Merz, 2008).;The present findings confirmed that the involvement of users within the redesign process positively influence the redesign of the FBI Intranet. The findings also concluded a significant relationship between changes to the intranet and executive leadership’s commitment to the redesign. The results indicated overall user satisfaction with the intranet redesign and the use of intranet as an effective tool to communicate within the Bureau. The researcher recommended that the results of the open-ended questions be reviewed and categorized with usable data for future |

A model of continuous feedback for aligning curriculum of bachelor of science degree programs with the changing needs of technical industries. $49.99 Many university programs aim to prepare graduates for positions in technical fields. As technology is continuously changing and the focus of business enterprises has shifted to more of a global nature, institutions of higher education must develop a method of updating program curricula in order to most appropriately prepare graduates for entry-level positions. The purpose of this study was to develop a method of surveying industry experts to identify changes technical industries will face in the future for application in higher education curriculums. Specifically, this study was completed to determine current and future skills required of apparel designers for entry level positions.;Apparel design program administrators are continually faced with updating curriculum in order to most appropriately prepare graduates for careers in the apparel industry. The problem with identifying the skills currently required of entry-level designers is that the skills change as the apparel industry evolves. Therefore, in order for the changing needs of the apparel industry to be addressed by an apparel program, a method of surveying the apparel industry for current and future needs must be developed. This study involved surveying current apparel industry professionals via a Delphi study technique to identify current and future skills required of fashion designers in entry level positions. The Delphi Technique utilized to gather expert opinions employed 2 rounds of surveys all delivered and returned via Survey Monkey, an on-line survey tool. The first round requested that participants identify the current and future skill sets required of entry-level apparel designers, and identify potential changes the apparel industry will experience over the next seven years. The second round refined these skill sets and attempted to reach general agreement amongst the panelists. A surrogate measure of customer satisfaction in the manufacture of Printed Wiring Boards. $108 The objective of this research is to determine and develop a model that is capable of accurately measuring customer satisfaction for different industries and in particularly for the Printed Wiring Boards (PWB) Manufacturers. The new model will incorporate data not being collected or utilized by the survey method of determining customer satisfaction.;The method used is a weighted average of satisfaction among several researched categories with percentages that accurately represent the relative importance of multiple facets of the PWB manufacturers customer satisfaction.;A very common term in quality assurance is that “What is not measured accurately can not be evaluated or managed correctly,” thus customer satisfaction is a very important aspect of any business, industry, or government. A satisfied customer will do more business and recommend it to other potential customers. Thus the business will grow and more revenues result. On the other hand, an unsatisfied customer will abandon the business and encourage more customers not to get involved with the same business so the business may decline and lose its market share and profitability. The categories that contribute to PWB customer satisfaction will be determined by conducting surveys among the leaders and best in the business of the PWB industry in addition to discovery of related articles that define the categories of the customer satisfaction for the PWB manufacturers.;Once the categories are determined, the research concentrates on the weighting of the categories that most contribute to the PWB customer’s satisfaction and a measure of satisfaction is derived. The model is easily applied to any other kind of PWB business or service industry.;The model is based on empirical methods that will give an accurate measurement for the PWB customer’s satisfaction. This in turn allows organizations the opportunity for improving customer satisfaction and increasing market share. The algorithm is based on characteristics |

A survey of parent satisfaction about services for children with Pervasive Developmental Disorder. $49.99 Scope and method of study. The current study updated the results from the Howlin and Moore (1997) study and furthermore evaluated some specific issues regarding the diagnostic and intervention process for parents of children with autism. The possible correlates of parent stress such as satisfaction with services, geographical location, age and type of diagnosis were explored. 126 parents of children with Autistic Disorder, Asperger’s Disorder, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified completed the study. They completed demographic information; Early Autism Experiences Survey; and stress measures; such as Parental Stress Scale and the Perceived Stress Scale. Both, parent stress at diagnosis and current stress were measured. Descriptive statistics were reported for the age at which the diagnosis was received, and the age at which intervention services were first received. Pearson’s coefficient of correlation and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to test the seven hypotheses.;Findings and conclusions. Results showed that the diagnosis of autism is becoming more systematic and is being received at much younger ages than before. The findings in this study suggested no link between current parent stress and satisfaction of services in the sample in our study. However, it was found that parents continue to experience clinical levels of stress as they seek services. This stress was not significantly related to the child’s age of the diagnosis. This might suggest that all parents regardless of the age of diagnosis experience clinical levels of stress. Furthermore, it was found that there was no correlation between the level of difficulty in obtaining a diagnosis and parent stress at diagnosis. Parents living in rural areas did not differ significantly from those living in urban areas based on their satisfaction and stress scores. Finally, the diagnostic groups did not differ significantly based on the current |

A survey of pre-1978 households in San Antonio, Texas in potential need of a low-cost option for soil lead remediation. $49.99 A study was conducted to compile a database of San Antonio homes that may be in potential need of a low-cost soil remediation option. The database may be used as a reference guide for scientists and health officials should soil remediation through phytoremediation become available for implementation in the future. The study is valuable to the efforts being made by San Antonio’s health officials to eliminate the alarming rate of childhood lead poisoning within the city. The study will include a survey, soil sampling, and dust swipe sampling. The answers given in the survey will be analyzed in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The total Pb concentrations in soil (mug/g) and dust (mug/ft2) were extracted through acid digestion and analyzed with inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-MS). The concentration of bioaccessible Pb in soil was estimated by simulating the human gastrointestinal process in the stomach phase (IVG-S) method. The concentration of bioaccessible Pb is included in this study to show how much of the Pb present in the soil sampled is available for absorption into the human body. The results from the survey demonstrate there may be a lack of education in San Antonio about the possible hazards of exposing children to lead-based paint and Pb contaminated soil. The results from the soil and dust analysis indicate three of the seven residences that participated have total Pb concentrations in both soil and dust above the EPA/HUD thresholds for Pb hazards. This study suggests further risk assessment by certified risk professionals to determine whether or not the residences are in need of paint and/or soil abatement.;Keywords: Lead (Pb), phytoremediation, In-vitro method, soil, household dust, survey |

Accuracy of GPS Precise Point Positioning $61 GPS is effectively used in science and engineering since the release of official IGS precise orbits in 1994. Various surveying and processing methods are available for GPS, and the accuracy level depends on the method used. It is useful to predict the accuracy of GPS prior to a field survey for the purposes of network design. Today, accuracy prediction formulas are available for relative positioning that requires two or more GPS receivers. Precise Point Positioning (PPP) from NASA’s GPS software GIPSY revolutionized the GPS processing since it provides methods leading to mm positioning without a need of a reference station. GIPSY user community is growing rapidly and at this instance it would be good to provide a tool assessing the acuracy of PPP. This book targets both practitioners and researchers. It should also be a useful guide for the relative positioning users for comparing the results derived here with those of published previously. The literature review and the interim analysis results made availeble through tables for hands on applications should be interesting for graduate students. |

Algorithms for Image Processing and Computer Vision $169.68 A cookbook of the hottest new algorithms and cutting-edge techniques in image processing and computer vision This amazing book/CD package puts the power of all the hottest new image processing techniques and algorithms in your hands. Based on J. R. Parker’s exhaustive survey of Internet newsgroups worldwide, Algorithms for Image Processing and Computer Vision answers the most frequently asked questions with practical solutions. Parker uses dozens of real-life examples taken from fields such as robotics, space exploration, forensic analysis, cartography, and medical diagnostics, to clearly describe the latest techniques for morphing, advanced edge detection, wavelets, texture classification, image restoration, symbol recognition, and genetic algorithms, to name just a few. And, best of all, he implements each method covered in C and provides all the source code on the CD. For the first time, you’re rescued from the hours of mind-numbing mathematical calculations it would ordinarily take to program these state-of-the-art image processing capabilities into software. At last, nonmathematicians get all the shortcuts they need for sophisticated image recognition and processing applications. On the CD-ROM you’ll find: Complete code for examples in the book A gallery of images illustrating the results of advanced techniques A free GNU compiler that lets you run source code on any platform A system for restoring damaged or blurred images A genetic algorithms package |
