”Safety first”: Childhood maltreatment, attachment, and cognitive processing: A mediation model. $49.99 Childhood maltreatment is a pervasive problem, with severe developmental consequences across multiple domains. A growing body of empirical evidence indicates that there are critical periods in childhood during which the experience of maltreatment has a profound impact on the developing brain. The developing brain drives cognitive, emotional, social, and psychological development and functioning; thus, understanding the relationship among environmental interactions and the subsequent impact on childhood neurodevelopment can provide insights into how the maltreated child self-regulates social and emotional experiences (such as attachment and interpersonal relationships) and processes information (such as auditory verbal information within social and therapeutic relationships). Those insights can inform the design of more effective treatment approaches for maltreated children that promise to more effectively reduce the long-term impact of the multiple developmental sequelae associated with maltreatment.;This dissertation investigates the interface between childhood relational maltreatment, attachment, and cognitive processing, specifically: auditory and language processing. A sample of 117 incarcerated male adolescents, mean age of 17, from a Midwestern detention center participated in a survey study. The central hypothesis of this study was that attachment acts as a mediator between early relational maltreatment and later deficits in cognitive processing, deficits that then have negative consequences to the social and emotional functioning.;A Structure Equation Modeling strategy was utilized to examine the role of attachment and cognitive processing deficits in child relational maltreatment. A significant relation was revealed between attachment on auditory processing as well as internalizing and externalizing behaviors including withdrawal, anxiety, social problems, and aggression. However, when attachment was held constant, the relation between child relational |

‘Scape: The International Magazine of Landscape Architecture and Urbanism $5.2 Making a well drawn design is not enough. Designers have to work with coalitions and alianties, time and process, ecology and economy. They have to be clever, with a broad vision. This new approach doesn’t need to be boring. It can make fun. And be sexy.Green metropolises: developing older cities and rural non-places into tasty green housing landscapes. Examples in Germany, Belgium and Algeria. The tradition of IBA, Olympic Games and World expo’s: how exhibitions contribute to sustainable spatial quality. Acupuncture in London: a catalogue of ideas to renew old districts. The concept of Hollands Green Heart: how to revitalise an old planning concept. American artists vs Dutch engineers. Water as the engine of change. Essay: survey before plan, design as an exploration. The changing position of the architect. Portrait: Kees Christiaanse: urban designer in Holland and China. Christiaanse seems to play with urbanism, using informal rules as a design instrument. |

A Harmony of the Arts: The Nebraska State Capitol $9.99 Since its completion in 1932, the Nebraska State Capitol has been widely recognized as an architectural masterpiece, one that justifiably inspires pride in the citizens of the state and admiration in people everywhere. Rising four hundred feet from a massive two-story base, domed with gold-glazed tile and topped with a bronze statue of a pioneer sower of grain, it can be seen for miles on the plains. This most striking of statehouses, designed by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue in 1920 and under construction for a decade, successfully embodies the union of art, architecture, and humanism.A Harmony of the Arts: The Nebraska State Capitol surveys in words and pictures the architectural achievement and the artists responsible for it. Frederick C. Luebke introduces the book with a history of the capitals and capitols of Nebraska. H. Keith Sawyers writes about Goodhue’s architectural vision, which was carried out by other artists after his death. David Murphy examines the contribution of Hartley Burr Alexander, the philosopher and anthropologist who developed the symbological details of Goodhue’s vision and invested the building’s many inscriptions with poetic elegance. Dale L. Gibbs considers Lee Lawrie’s sculpture, remarkably congruent with the general design. Joan Woodside and Betsy Gabb discuss the decorative art of the mosaicist, Hildreth Meiere. Norman Geske and Jon Nelson examine the capitol murals, painted by eight artists over four decades. And Robert C. Ripley allows the reader to see the building in its setting, as landscaped by Ernst Herminghaus. Lavishly illustrated and handsomely produced, A Harmony of the Arts presents the first survey in many years of Nebraska’s magnificent capitol and offers new ways of looking at it. |

A Spatial Decision Support System Approach for Interagency Partnership $99 There are three strategies for overcoming the spatial mismatch between jobs and home locations: (1) bring jobs closer to low-income neighborhoods; (2) bring affordable housing solutions near to employment generating areas; and (3) provide transportation connections between jobs and housing. To facilitate the planning and development of effective cross-sectoral strategies, a Spatial Decision Support System that ties together a Geographic Information System—with data from the transportation, housing, and economic development sectors—and a Multi-Criteria Decision (MCDM) tool were developed. An interview of urban geospatial data managers in relevant sectors in the Chicago area drove the data requirements of the integrated system. Furthermore, a multi-criteria survey using the Analytical Hierarchy Process methodology identified the differences in problem conceptualization. These two strategies were the foundation for the design of the Spatial Decision Support System presented in this book. |

A comparison of the aptitude and attitude of college students toward social and technical computer technology. $49.99 The purpose of this study was to investigate college students’ technical and social technology competencies based upon their attitudes toward computers and their perception of technical computer knowledge. The participants for this investigation were college undergraduates majoring in apparel merchandising and design and other related and non-related majors at the University of Arkansas. The research model selected for use in this study was the survey design method. There were a total of 1270 students responding to the survey with 1052 usable surveys remaining after cleaning the data for missing entries. This constituted an 83% response rate. The findings included significant effects of social aptitude by age and major, and technical aptitude by major. Males had significantly higher perceptions of technical aptitude, and both social and technical attitude toward computer technology than females. Whites had significantly higher perceptions of social aptitude toward computer technology than Nonwhites. Class standing had no significant effect on college student’s perceptions of either aptitude or attitude in social or technical computer technology. There were strong correlations between social aptitude and technical aptitude and social attitude and technical attitude. Colleges and universities as well as industry are taking advantage of social technology not only for recruitment but in the classroom and on the job as well. A strong relationship between social and technical aptitude and social and technical attitude would tend to indicate that students are ready for this type of interaction. |

A mixed methods portrait of urban instrumental music teaching. $49.99 The purpose of this mixed methods study was to learn about the ways that instrumental music teachers in Chicago navigate the urban landscape. The design of the study most closely resembles Creswell and Plano Clark’s (2007) two-part Triangulation Convergence Mixed Methods Design, with the addition of an initial exploratory focus group component. Phase 1 of the study included a focus group composed of urban instrumental music teachers (N = 7) that informed the development of the survey questionnaire. Phase 2 of the study involved a survey of instrumental music teachers in the Chicago Public Schools (N = 90). Phase 3 of this study was based on interviews with and observations of 4 selected instrumental music teachers within the Chicago Public Schools. The reason for collecting both quantitative and qualitative data was to corroborate results and paint a more comprehensive portrait of urban instrumental music teaching.;Research questions focused on the contextual knowledge that teachers hold regarding their students and communities, the specialized skills they rely upon to be successful, the attitudes and beliefs they hold towards teaching instrumental music in an urban school, and the challenges and rewards that they perceive from teaching in this context. Of the 22 instances where quantitative and qualitative data aligned to address the same phenomenon, there were 11 instances where the methods confirmed one another, 1 instance where the methods contradicted one another, 4 instances where the data provided mixed convergence, and 6 categories where the methods did not directly confirm or contradict one another but rather enhanced the general understanding of the phenomenon. The results suggest that instrumental music teachers utilize their knowledge of the urban context to modify their general pedagogical approach, that they believe a specialized set of skills is required for success in the urban context, that they have relatively positive levels of job satisfaction |

A model for design of globalized instruction for healthcare interventions in developing countries. $69 The use of globalized design for international non-profit organizations allows multiple communities to access instruction without duplication of effort. The WHO distance learning materials project for improvement of Blood Safety in developing countries was used to document a globalized design process through interviews of the design team members and document review. The validity of the process was established from an electronic survey of country representatives of 94 countries from four global regions. Adoption of the materials, outcomes, user opinions of efficacy and fit with audiences were used to reflect the external validity of the model. The results were used to modify processes used and to present the Emmanuel and Fordham Model for Globalized Design. The model is characterized by global, regional, local, and evaluation phases, embedded within surrounding contextual factors. The model includes an initiation phase, reliance on a design team with significant expertise and international representation, extensive formative evaluation from experts, implementation and dissemination processes cascading from a global to a local level, and contextual considerations. The graphical model has deliverables for each step to assist with project management and reporting to funding agencies. The 49% adoption rate of the materials and the reported good to extremely good fit of the materials with varied audiences supports the use of the globalized model. Reported outcomes of the use of the materials were highly satisfactory for the primary objectives of the materials; to facilitate the use of non-remunerated blood donors and to improve standards of infection testing. There were no differences in development, educational, and healthcare indicators between the countries that reported complete satisfaction and those reporting less than complete satisfaction. The sub-components that did show differences matched the needs of the less developed countries more than those with higher |
