2.      If you go ahead and sign up, get an email invitation to take a survey, then you go to the site to see nothing but more offers to sign up with other vendors. That is your clue that something is not quite right.

The truth is, web sites like these are not actual survey taking companies. You will never even see surveys from them. You are not making any money by clicking away on all of those links. What you want is to get to the survey taking.

”History is bunk”: Historical memories at Henry Ford’s Greenfield Village. $49.99 In 1929, Henry Ford opened Greenfield Village, his outdoor history museum in Dearborn, Michigan. Fourteen years earlier, Ford announced that written history was bunk. The museum was designed to reshape the historical project by celebrating farmers and inventors in lieu of military heroes and politicians. Included among the structures were Thomas Edison’s Menlo Park Laboratory, Noah Webster’s home, and Ford’s Quadricycle shop. Ford used architecture and material culture to connect American progress to self-made manhood, middle-class domesticity, and the inventive spirit. Despite signs that the struggling automotive industry is responsible for Michigan’s economic decline, the site is popular—since 1976 over one million visitors have attended each year. This project examines this phenomenon, which exemplifies how publics often fail to link past and present in the same way that scholars do. The Village’s largely unexplored archives documenting its internal history are mined, along with primary and secondary sources on the histories of public history and the Detroit metropolitan-area. Chapter one studies the site’s construction and audiences during Ford’s presidency arguing that the populist public images of Ford and Edison mediated encounters with the Village. Chapter two links the site to the racial politics of the Detroit metro-area, which marked the Village as an alternative public space for whites. Chapter three draws on visitor surveys, to show how patrons’ worldviews were shaped by the politics of populist-conservativism. Chapter four explains how the appointment of an academic as president ensured the addition of progressive historical narratives, but the site’s location in Dearborn impeded efforts to draw a larger African American audience. A Landscape of Pilgrimage and Trade in Wadi Masila, Yemen: The Case of Al-Qisha and Qabr Hud in the Islamic Period $85 Archaeological excavations were carried out at al-Qisha, located on the Wadi Masila in the Mahra region of the Republic of Yemen. Situated along the Northern Indian Ocean coast, the Wadi Masila is an integral part of the Hadramaut drainage system located within the geological Hadramaut Arch. Regional surveys were carried out between 1997-2000, defining Bronze and Iron Age and Islamic period sites. Al-Qisha is an Islamic period settlement site that spans over 1 km and includes an extensive village (part of which is still inhabited), a cemetery, and a mosque. Al-Qisha as an archaeological site is enmeshed in an historical and ethnographic landscape of trade and mediation. This volume has three goals. The main objective is to present the data collected from excavations at al-Qisha, the first excavated Islamic period settlement site in the Mahra region of Yemen to date. The second goal is to examine this site in its greater cultural and physical landscape. And third, getting to the “route” of the matter, al-Qisha serves as a gateway community linked with the Ba’Abbad of Qabr Hud, the tomb of the pre-Islamic prophet Hud. This study is unique in that it presents a first attempt to integrate archaeology with the scant history and sparse ethnography of the Mahra and Hadramaut regions.

A case study of the digital divide: A study of teacher awareness and efforts to bridge the gap in underserved communities. $69 The purpose of this research was to examine the digital divide as it relates to teacher perceptions regarding the importance of narrowing the technology gap for low-income and minority students. This research was a replication of a study conducted by Wilson in 2002. The original study questioned whether teachers were aware of the term digital divide and how closely their definitions coincided with the review of literature. This present study sought to underscore the awareness levels of teachers regarding the problems associated with the digital divide and to bring their perceptions to light on a community-level basis. Descriptive statistics were used to illustrate teachers’ responses to survey questions. Out of the 41 surveys that were distributed, 21 teachers responded, many of whom were female. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to support the following conclusions: (a) most educators were unaware of the term digital divide, (b) all respondents agreed or strongly agreed that technology use in the classroom increased student motivation, (c) all respondents agreed or strongly agreed that technology enhanced learning, (d) few teachers at the school site reported using technology on a daily basis for instructional purposes, (e) most respondents agreed that guidance in how to integrate technology into daily lesson planning was needed, (f) most educators cited time constraints as being a large barrier to true technology integration in the curricula, and (g) many of those studied would have liked to have seen more technical support from the school district. The review of literature supported the idea that staff development plays an essential role in determining teacher performance within individual classrooms. When she started at the University of Michigan to study Anthropology in 1953 she embarked on a lifetime immersed in archaeology by profession and marriage. Her expertise lay in the laboratory, where she worked with materials from prehistoric sites across America. In addition to her own work, she worked on many sites and papers with her husband Dan F. Morse, whom she married in 1960, raising three sons. Her love of antiques led her to open a business in 1979 which she still operates, having retired from academic life in 1997. Anderson was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1934, and attended Crystal Lake Community High, Crystal Lake, Illinois, graduating in June 1952. She became interested in archaeology while studying anthropology at the University of Michigan. In the 1950s there were fewer women at University, let alone any who chose that discipline. She received a BA in anthropology (with distinction) in June 1956, an MA in anthropology in June 1958 and a PhD in May 1959, all from Michigan. Anderson was to meet her future husband, Dan F. Morse because she was not allowed to be the sole woman in the field. She was, however, permitted to be the lab assistant for the Etowah site excavations in 1958 with Dan. They were recruited by Dr. James B. Griffin, their mentor at Michigan and the excavation was led by Lewis Larsen. Hydraulic anisotropy characterization of fracture-dominated media using azimuthal self potential. $49.99 Increasing attention has been given to the exploration and development of fractured-rock aquifers as new sources groundwater supply to meet the demand of a growing population. Today, the development of groundwater resources includes the application of cost-effective, non-invasive geophysical investigations to solve groundwater problems in the subsurface as part of an initiative to protect water quality. Electric geophysical investigations were undertaken to characterize hydraulic and electric anisotropy at the laboratory and field scales by combining and comparing asymmetric configurations of azimuthal self potential gradient (ASPG) and azimuthal resistivity surveys (ARS) on (1) a fracture block model, (2) pneumatically-fractured compressed clay sediments, and (3) fractured crystalline bedrock at four field sites throughout the north New Jersey Highlands Province.;In situ electrokinetic self potentials observed on a fracture block model, field-scale fractures, and mechanically-induced fractures are consistent with electrokinetic theory. Linearity exists between ASPG and fracture strike density in all three fracture systems. The magnitude of electrokinetic SP scales with flow rate for any particular fracture set and the positive lobe of the ASPG anomaly indicates the flow direction. ASPG anisotropy appears diagnostic of (1) hydraulic gradient driving flow within fracture sets, and (2) fracture density (presumably controlling the strength of the streaming potential coefficient). Geophysical characterization of bulk rock anisotropy in fractures at four field sites in the New Jersey Highlands (NJH) showed ASPG captured hydraulic-anisotropy at three of four sites, whereas ARS data were dominated by resistivity heterogeneity at all but one site.;Significant advantages of ASPG relative to ARS surveys in hydrogeologic site characterization of fracture-dominated media include its (1) cost-effectiveness, (2) sensitivity to fracture-induced anisotropy, (3) capability to
