Compensation Resources, Inc. Releases Its 2008 Severance Survey
Upper Saddle River, N.J. – April 1, 2008 – Compensation Resources, Inc.(CRI) has released the results of its 2008 Severance Survey. The purpose of this study was to obtain current data on the prevalence of various practices affecting severance policies among employers that represent all sizes, locations, and industries. Data was compiled from survey questions that were developed by CRI and distributed to companies in over 18 industries, in addition to Non-Profit organizations. The survey sampled severance data from a variety of organizations, collected in February 2008.
This survey reports the different areas of severance. Some of the information reported includes implementation, updates, how often the current policy is reviewed, employee satisfaction, and paid out. The survey also reports by employee level the length of severance based on the manner in which it is, flat number of weeks and also number of weeks per year of service.
Other major points recorded in this survey are:
• Healthcare costs and coverage
• Outplacement eligibility and services
• Covenants
This survey covers the major areas of severance and is a necessity in the industry. For the price of $125, it is a must have handbook for your company’s bookshelf.
For more information or to order the survey, please contact Andrew Sellers at (877) 934-0505 x115 or visit our website at www.compensationresources.com

Cheap Options For Your Legal Needs:A Mini-guide to Prepaid Legal Services and Legal Plans So You Can Have Affordable Attorneys Readily Available To Solve All Your Legal Problems $3.99 We are likely to need legal help at least once a year, yet most of us do not actively seek legal help. This is borne out of data from a survey conducted by Leo J. Shapiro & Associates, on behalf of the American Bar Association’s Section of Litigation, which shows that close to three quarters of American adults experience some event during a twelve-month period that may require the services of a lawyer. Over half of those who needed an attorney chose not to hire one, and close to 80% of those yet to experience legal problems gave strong indications they might go down the same route. Perhaps the primary reason why most people opt out of legal coverage is because of the costs involved in hiring a lawyer. Hourly fees of $100 up to $1000 are out of reach of most people’s budget. Another major reason may be the dilemma of searching for a good attorney and the right service to expect.A legal plan may solve these problems and change the way you think of legal services without fear of insurmountable costs or inadequate service. A legal plan provides you with an attorney who is readily available at all times in cases where you need advice on anything that is of legal nature. Basic services include the drafting of your will, review of sample health contracts and writing legal letters on your behalf which are all handled at no added cost to you. Should you require further services such as divorce, custody of children and any legal representation in court, all you have to do is pay a premium and get more inclusive coverage for when you really need it. |

Handbooks in Operations Research and Management Science: Simulation $82.23 This Handbook is a collection of chapters on key issues in the design and analysis of computer simulation experiments on models of stochastic systems. The chapters are tightly focused and written by experts in each area. For the purpose of this volume “simulation” refers to the analysis of stochastic processes through the generation of sample paths (realization) of the processes. Attention focuses on design and analysis issues and the goal of this volume is to survey the concepts, principles, tools and techniques that underlie the theory and practice of stochastic simulation design and analysis. Emphasis is placed on the ideas and methods that are likely to remain an intrinsic part of the foundation of the field for the foreseeable future. The chapters provide up-to-date references for both the simulation researcher and the advanced simulation user, but they do not constitute an introductory level ‘how to’ guide. Computer scientists, financial analysts, industrial engineers, management scientists, operations researchers and many other professionals use stochastic simulation to design, understand and improve communications, financial, manufacturing, logistics, and service systems. A theme that runs throughout these diverse applications is the need to evaluate system performance in the face of uncertainty, including uncertainty in user load, interest rates, demand for product, availability of goods, cost of transportation and equipment failures.* Tightly focused chapters written by experts* Surveys concepts, principles, tools, and techniques that underlie the theory and practice of stochastic simulation design and analysis* Provides an up-to-date reference for both simulation researchers and advanced simulation users |

Home literacy experiences of children with visual impairments and multiple disabilities. $49.99 The purpose of this study was to describe the outcomes of frequent storybook reading experiences of children with visual impairments and multiple disabilities and to determine if these differ from children with visual impairments only. This study used a two-phase, mixed-method approach. First, an Internet-based parent questionnaire was distributed to a volunteer sample of parents of young children who are visually impaired who had recently participated in a program promoting daily storybook reading activities. A total of 41 parents from 23 different states completed the survey. Their children had an average age of 5.45 years (SD = 2.92) and almost equal numbers of boys ( n = 20) and girls (n = 21). Parents were assigned to the Visual Impairments Only (VI) group (n = 17) or the Multiple Disabilities (MD) group (n = 24) based on their report of any disabilities their child had in addition to their visual impairment. Second, semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted to explore specific details on the challenges, supports, and outcomes related to storybook reading experiences with nine volunteer parents of children with multiple disabilities. A comparison of the two groups found that children with multiple disabilities had less access to braille materials in the home than children without additional disabilities. The majority of parents in both groups indicated they were comfortable with their child’s use of braille, large print, and assistive devices. The parents of children with multiple disabilities reported that service providers had less involvement in their child’s literacy development, revealing the need for training of professionals in providing strategies to engage children with multiple disabilities and visual impairments in early literacy activities. No significant differences were found between the children with visual impairments and the children who also had multiple disabilities in frequency of literacy activities, duration of literacy |

Intimate strangers and estranged intimates: An investigation of the impact of instant messaging and short message service on the size and strength of social networks in Kuwait. $49.99 Information and communication technologies (ICT) have revolutionized how people experience spatial proximity, reality, and connectivity. These technologies provide inexpensive access to anything and anyone in the world. They also replicate face-to-face interaction in cyber-space and allow for participation in numerous modes of social exchange. People use Information and communication technologies to write web logs (blogs), send electronic mail (email), socialize through networking sites (such as Facebook and MySpace), text each other through mobile phone Short Message Service (SMS) and chat via online instant messaging (IM). With all these applications, a debate has ignited that actual physical communication is decreasing in favor of online connectivity, thus leading to more but weaker social ties. Previous research within the field of communication technologies has produced incongruent and contrasting results regarding the effects of ICT on human behavior and social connectivity. Additionally, only a humble body of research avails systematic representative studies tracking the sociological impact of media technologies. Such systematic research is non-existent in developing countries. Given the rarity of research in this realm and the incessant change in technology, this study aimed to examine the effects of two types of ICT, text and instant messaging, on the strength and size of three circles of social networks (family, friends and acquaintances) in Kuwait. The study also explored the potential impact of demographic characteristics on these circles. This examination was theoretically framed by uses and gratifications. Using a self-administered a questionnaire, the study surveyed a nationally representative sample of 406 IM and/or SMS users, reflecting Kuwaiti adults between the ages of 18 to 65 years. The survey was distributed to respondents in government offices, private companies, educational institutions and malls in the State of Kuwait. Statistical analyses |

Law Enforcement And The Ins, Second Edition $38 This study utilizes the perceptions of criminal investigators of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) to describe the normative structure of an organization in its social context. The legacy INS attempted to provide both a service and control function. This dual mandate made it difficult for INS investigators to fulfill their mission of interior enforcement of the immigration laws. Other problems included organizational relations, as well as notions about professionalism, which affected recruitment, retention, training, and worker expectations. On March 1, 2003, the INS separated its dual mandate and moved to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) with the intent of solving some of these problems. As a result, one might assume that the fundamental contradiction imposed by the dual-mandate structure would be resolved. The updated material in this edition discusses that prospect and includes statistical analyses of a sample of apprehended aliens, as well as the Survey of Inmates from the Bureau of Justice Statistics for information on foreign-born criminals. The data file on apprehended aliens is available for download for purchasers of the book. Current interior enforcement strategies are discussed in an interview with the Special Agent in Charge of the New York DHS office. |

Measuring undergraduate student perceptions of service quality in higher education. $69 The purpose of this study was to examine undergraduate student satisfaction with college services and environment at a large southeastern doctoral/research extensive university (target university), with the long-term intent of minimizing detractors to providing exceptional service quality, positively influencing customer satisfaction, and building loyalty intentions among students.;The ACT Student Opinion Survey (ACT, Inc.) was used to find the level of student satisfaction with the college services and environment. A stratified random sample of 468 undergraduate students responded to the survey. Three research questions guided the investigation. The study examined the general level of satisfaction with the support services, compared satisfaction levels to those of similar institutions of higher education, and examined whether satisfaction varied based on a student’s age, gender, or ethnicity. Two-tailed t-tests showed significant differences in the mean satisfaction scores of the target university and ACT national norms, and one-way ANOVAs indicated significant differences based on a student’s age, gender, and ethnicity.;The results indicated that students were satisfied with the library, and dissatisfied with parking and course availability at the target university. Students were significantly less satisfied with one-fifth of all support services and all the environmental categories, but significantly more satisfied with their library than those in the ACT national norm.;A relatively small number of significant differences existed in student satisfaction with the college services and environment based on a student’s age, gender, or ethnicity. Of the nearly 200 ANOVA analysis conducted to explore this research question, only 11 showed significant differences, and in almost every case, the differences were small. Specific student comments regarding campus parking, advising, class availability, facilities, and staff deportment are provided.;The results of the study |

Oral Health Surveys: Basic Methods $11.4 Now in its fourth revised edition, this widely used manual describes basic methods for conducting oral health surveys. Designed to assist epidemiological surveyors and planners of oral health services, the book presents standardized methodologies for collecting and reporting data on oral diseases and conditions and for estimating future demands on oral health care services. Chapters advocate use of a practical and economic sample design approach supported by a description of diagnostic criteria that can be readily understood and applied in all countries. Recommended survey methods, which have been used by over 130 health administrations throughout the world, have proved their capacity to yield reliable, useful, and internationally comparable data on oral health status and treatment needs. New in this edition are sections on the evaluation of extra-oral conditions, the oral mucosa, enamel opacities/hypoplasia, loss of periodontal attachment, and dentofacial anomalies. The book also features detailed instructions for using the WHO oral health assessment form in its updated version. Use of this standardized form, which is strongly encouraged by WHO, is supported by a computer data processing service available on request. The book has seven chapters. The opening chapters explain general principles for designing basic oral health surveys and offer advice on how to organize and conduct a survey. Chapter three describes ways of ensuring that the data collected are as consistent and reliable as possible. The importance of training examiners to make consistent clinical judgements is repeatedly emphasized. Guidelines for implementing the survey are provided in chapter four, which offers practical advice on topics ranging from the responsibilities of personnel and ways to avoid mistakes, through recommended instruments and supplies, to simple measures for ensuring that examination areas are efficiently organized. The fifth and most extensive chapter provides detailed |

Personality profiles of police executives: An analysis based on the Hogan Personality Inventory and the Hogan Development Survey. $49.99 Governments generally recruit police executives who promote quality regulatory practices, develop structures in the organization’s use of discretion, and make choices on methods achieving compliance from the general public (Sparrow, 2000). The identification of law enforcement executives possessing appropriate personality traits and dispositions capable of promoting regulatory practices to achieve compliance from the general public is one of many important factors influencing the potential success of the organization. This study examined the personality profiles of law enforcement executives from a specific agency through the use of a quantitative methodology based on survey and criterion data. The surveys used in this study were the Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI) and Hogan Development Survey (HDS) which were used to measure normal personality traits and levels of dysfunctional disposition(s) respectively. The criterion data was used to identify possible correlation(s) with the HPI and HDS. The sample consisted of 37 participants recruited from the hierarchy of a large metropolitan law enforcement agency. Descriptive statistics were performed to obtain a demographic profile of the sample as well as percentages and frequencies. Descriptive, t-tests, and correlation analyses were conducted.;The participants in this study varied with respect to their type of police duties but they generally had the same skill sets required for their jobs. The participants were categorized into two groups: Group 1 was the appointed staff ranks and Group 2 was the civil service ranks. From the research reviewed and presented in this study research questions and hypotheses were generated about the two groups relating to their scores on the HPI and HDS. Results found that one of five hypotheses was supported. The supported hypothesis stated that both groups would have low to average scores in the specified HDS scales. Additionally, the research showed varying correlations |

Secondary pre-service teachers’ knowledge and confidence in dealing with students’ First Amendment rights in the classroom. $49.99 Every year teachers find themselves involved in conflicts dealing with violations of students’ First Amendment rights to freedom of expression and freedom of religion. Students and parents file lawsuits against school districts because they feel teachers and administrators have violated their First Amendment rights. As a result, many teacher preparation programs require pre-service teachers to learn about educational law and the rights students have at school. Yet, little research exists about how well pre-service teachers are prepared to deal with First Amendment issues in the classroom.;The purpose of this study was to investigate how well pre-service teachers are prepared to deal with First Amendment issues in the classroom. This study reviews the literature regarding the need for educational law in teacher preparation, historical cases providing guidance to teachers regarding students’ First Amendment rights in the classroom, and recent court cases involving conflicts between students and schools regarding students’ First Amendment rights. Using a mixed-methods approach, the researcher investigated pre-service teachers at a large urban college of education using a survey developed by the researcher and interviews with a sample of the pre-service teachers.;One hundred and ten secondary pre-service teachers submitted surveys, and 10 pre-service teachers participated in interviews. Using analyses of variance, the researcher found that there was not a statistically significant difference between the scores or confidence levels of pre-service teachers based on their subject area or their academic level (undergraduate/graduate).;The knowledge that pre-service teachers have acquired is derived from experiences while in school, teaching, or in their coursework. In addition, when preservice teachers have a personal experience with a First Amendment issue, they are more confident in their knowledge and more likely to take action in dealing with the issue.;Pre-service |

Test and Analysis of Web Services $99 The service-oriented approach has become more and more popular, now allowing highly integrated and yet heterogeneous applications. Web services are the natural evolution of conventional middleware technologies to support Web-based and enterprise-level integration. The highly dynamic characteristics of service-oriented applications means their validation is a continuous process that often runs in parallel with execution. It is not possible to clearly distinguish between the predeployment validation of a system and its use, nor is it possible to guarantee that the checks passed at a certain time will be passed at a later time and in the actual execution environment as well.Baresi and Di Nitto have put together the first reference on all aspects of testing and validating service-oriented architectures, taking into account these inherent intricacies. The contributions by leading academic and industrial research groups are structured into four parts on: static analysis to acquire insight into how the system is supposed to work; testing techniques to sample its actual behavior; monitoring to probe its operational performance; and nonfunctional requirements like reliability and trust. This monograph is an initial source of knowledge for researchers in both academia and industry in the field of service-oriented architecture validation and verification approaches. They will find a comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art approaches as well as techniques and tools to improve the quality of service-oriented applications. |

The effect of two intervention techniques on the level of burnout among children service workers. $69 The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of two intervention techniques on the level of burnout among Children Service Workers. A total of 28 individuals voluntarily agreed to participate in the study. These members were randomly assigned to three groups, Person Centered Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Theory and a control group. The Person Centered and Cognitive Behavioral groups received information and intervention techniques, specific to each theory, over a six week period. The control group received no treatment. At the conclusion of the six weeks of intervention treatment, all three groups were post-tested using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey. Analyses were conducted on the post-tests of the dependent variables and covariates using among group multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA). No differences in level of burnout among the groups were found based on receiving Person Centered, Cognitive Behavioral or no intervention. Limitations of this study were greatly influenced by small sample size and limited treatment periods. |

The reintroduction of heritage streetcars and the related effects of community identity and social interaction with the residents in streetcar-oriented developments. $49.99 Heritage streetcars have increasingly drawn the attention of planners and transit officials as an alternative mode of public transit that complements the economic development and tourism strategies of numerous cities. Advocates have touted the benefits of heritage streetcars as a circulator transit mode while promoting a compact, pedestrian-friendly environment with many urban revitalization efforts. As a character-defining mode of public transit, heritage streetcars have been reintroduced as a redevelopment approach that enables a community to restore a significant component of its heritage while facilitating development activity near streetcar routes. Heritage streetcars advance this strategy by evoking a sense of nostalgia and fostering a new heritage tourism strategy. Less tangible are the positive effects upon the social infrastructure of the residents in the streetcar-oriented developments and the perceived effects of heightened community identity.;This study was undertaken to provide a clearer understanding of the attitudes and perceptions of the residents in streetcar-oriented neighborhoods towards heritage streetcars. Do heritage streetcars play an important role fostering a heightened sense of community identity and help build social capital among residents? What are the physical characteristics of heritage streetcars that are favored or disliked by the residents and does their travel behavior contribute to a greater sense of community identity and social interaction? As an exploratory study, the research examined these questions through a survey and follow-up interviews that were administered to a sample of residents in streetcar-oriented developments and neighborhoods within the study sites of Memphis and Little Rock/North Little Rock. Both markets have reintroduced heritage streetcar service with significant development activity including extensive downtown housing growth near the streetcar routes. A sample of British households was drawn and first interviewed in 1991. The members of these original households have since been followed and annually interviewed.
