Unemployment, Inequality and Poverty in Urban China $175 Although the Chinese economy is growing at a very high rate, there are massive social dislocations arising as a result of economic restructuring. Though the scale of the problem is huge, very few studies have examined the changes in income inequality in the late 1990s due to a lack of data on household incomes. Based on extensive original research, this book redresses this imbalance, examining the issue of unemployment and the problems it has brought for the people of China. Investigating the market outcomes in post-reform urban China, the book focuses on the relationships between unemployment, inequality, and poverty. In addition, the authors provide an analysis on the emerging urban labour market and its stratified structure, job mobility, profit sharing, and the role of social capital. Empirical analysis is supported by rich data from nationally representative urban household and rural migrant surveys, providing the latest picture of the widening inequality in Chinese urban society. |

”Gimme that calculator” versus ”use your noggin”: The development of standard & non-standard positional identities in mathematics. $49.99 In this dissertation, I take a multi-level approach to report findings about positional identities in mathematics of students in elementary school. Positional identities develop over time and in local moment-to-moment interactions and involve how individuals position themselves, or are positioned in relation to others in specific social contexts. The overarching research question that I examine in this study is: What is revealed about students’ positional identities in mathematics by examining students’ participation across multiple timescales of individual history, practice and local interaction ? The main purpose of the study was to highlight that each level of analysis contributes to a distinct yet partial understanding of the manner in which students’ are positioned and how they negotiate their identity in an environment that involves doing mathematics. Combining different levels of analysis supports the construction of a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of identity. It helps us understand the identities that students bring to doing mathematics, how they enact their participation in mathematical practices, and how they develop identities based on social positioning. Specifically, I highlight how positions in local interactions are recognized are based on larger cultural practices in which they are embedded. Attention to social positioning in mathematics in relation to larger practices is crucial because it implicitly determines who is in charge during mathematical discussions and what constitutes mathematics.;The information sources included students’ semi-structured written surveys, students’ group interviews about doing mathematics in the classroom, and video records of students’ participation in an after-school math club. The findings of this study suggest that students bring fairly robust identities about themselves and others to situations of learning. Despite this, opportunities to participate in varied practices over time, where students have |

”Whatever it means to you”: Ethnicity, language, and the survey response in telephone-administered health surveys of African Americans. $49.99 Many public health surveys match the race of telephone interviewers to the anticipated race of respondents. This practice may be particularly prevalent when surveying populations with a possible mistrust of health research, such as African Americans. Interviewer race effects have received little scientific evaluation in telephone-administered health surveys with African Americans, and no empirical studies have explored respondents’ preferences for interviewer race or the role of ethnic identity in survey interactions. These dynamics may have important implications for respondents’ experiences with health surveys and, ultimately, survey data. This dissertation reviewed the interviewer effects literature and considered the importance of interviewer-associated measurement error in public health surveys. It also described the results of two empirical studies. The first study explored African American telephone survey respondents’ preferences for interviewer race. This study found that respondents with Afrocentric, Black American, and Cultural Mistrust ethnic identity components preferred to interact with African American interviewers and that interviewer race was less important to respondents with Assimilated, Bicultural, or Multicultural identity components. Respondents’ preferences for being surveyed by an African American interviewer were stronger when a survey contained more racial content. The second study explored the influence of African American telephone interviewers’ ethnic identity types and the use of African American English (AAE) on the survey interaction. Interviewers with a Bicultural ethnic identity component may have been more prone to using AAE features during telephone surveys with African American respondents than interviewers with other identity components. Interviewers used AAE features less when engaged in recruitment tasks and appeared to have used them more when administering nonracial, sensitive survey items. No pattern emerged for use of AAE |

40 Years of Research on Rent Seeking 1: Theory of Rent Seeking $229 The last survey of the rent-seeking literature took place more than a decade ago. Since that time a great deal of new research has been published in a wide variety of journals, covering a wide variety of topics. The breadth of that research is such that very few researchers will be familiar with more than a small part of contemporary research, and very few libraries will be able to provide access to the full breadth of that research. This two-volume collection provides an extensive overview of 40 years of rent-seeking research. The volumes include the foundational papers, many of which have not been in print for two decades. They include recent game-theoretic analyses of rent-seeking contests and also applications of the rent-seeking concepts and methodology to economic regulation, international trade policy, economic history, political competition, and other social phenomena. The new collection is more than twice as large as any previous collection and both updates and extends the earlier surveys. Volume I contains previously published research on the theory of rent-seeking contests, which is an important strand of contemporary game theory. Volume II contains previously published research that uses the theory of rent-seeking to analyze a broad range of public policy and social science topics. The editors spent more than a year assembling possible papers and, although the selections fill two large volumes, many more papers could have been included. Our aim has been to include the most important contributions in the literature and give a broad overview of secondary contributions. The end result is a fine collection that shows the flexibility and power of the rent-seeking methodology, and the light shed on a broad range of political, social, and institutional research issues. Each volume begins with an extensive survey of the literature written by the editors and an overview of the contributions included in the two volumes. |

A Critical Exploration of Frameworks for Assessing the Significance of New Zealand’s Historic Heritage $139.98 This study argues that considerations of value and significance are fundamental to sustainable heritage management practice. It explores critical issues relating to the valorisation of historic heritage in New Zealand and considers whether existing frameworks for evaluation and assessment are effective and appropriate. The two frames of reference comprise: firstly, theoretical principles relating to the nature and qualities of heritage value and secondly, operational strategies relating to the process of assessment. The study integrates current policy and practice within existing epistemology with primary research data using a mixed methodology. A review of international policy and practice contrasts the various approaches used in Australia, Canada, England and the United States of America, and identifies effective system characteristics. Existing understandings and practice within New Zealand are considered and analogies made between particular elements of the primary research drawn from surveys of professional and non-professional opinion of the heritage assessment process. The New Zealand findings are then set against the review of international evidence and the literature to identify significant strengths and shortcomings. |

A Guide To Biblical Commentaries & Reference Works $16.95 With thousands of commentaries on the Bible available, including dozens and sometimes hundreds for individual books, it can be difficult for students and pastors (and even many academics) to keep track of the options. How do the different series and authors approach the Bible? What commentaries are critical and/or more theologically liberal in their interpretation? Which writers share a given theological approach (e.g., Reformed, Wesleyan, etc.)? Without help, students and pastors could waste precious time and money searching for the tools they need to aid their study. Now in its 9th edition, Dr. Evans’s guide is a comprehensive survey and bibliography of resources that is one of the most thorough and detailed aids available to help pastors and theological students sort through the many volumes of commentaries and reference works that are available to them. Evans surveys the vast majority of commentary series, individual commentaries by book, and other resources directly related to exegetical research and biblical interpretation. In addition, Evans includes recommendations for: a “Bare-Bones” library of essentials; an ideal pastor’s reference library; and a suggested “ultimate reference library”. Regularly updated, A Guide to Biblical Commentaries & Reference Works is one of the very few works of its kind to be conversant with recent releases. It is also the largest of its kind, and one of the few single-volume surveys that covers the entire Bible. |

A History of Libya $30.9 John Wright begins his history of Libya as far back as prehistoric times and concludes with the fortieth anniversary of the Gadafi revolution. He briefly surveys the territory’s early hunter-gatherers and the activities of its mid-desert Garamantian civilization. Then he travels briskly through the land’s successive invaders: the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Muslim Arabs, Genoans, Normans, Spaniards, Knights of Malta, Ottoman Turks, and semi-independent Karamanlis. Wright traces the routes of the ancient trans-Saharan black slave trade, which involved ports in Tripoli, Benghazi, the eastern Mediterranean, the Balkans, the Aegean Sea, and the Levant, and he highlights Tripoli’s nineteenth-century role in enabling European exploration of the desert. Wright’s modern history centers on the Italian era (1911–1943), addressing the harshness of Italy’s long conquest yet giving credit to the material achievements of Air Marshal Italo Balbo. Three chapters recast Libya’s largely passive role in the Second World War; 1951′s fairly smooth transition to an internationally brokered independence; the Sanussi monarchy, which reigned for eighteen years; the discovery and exploitation of oil in the 1950s and 1960s; and the post-1969 Colonel Gadafi phenomenon. This revised edition adds a new chapter on the events surrounding Gadafi’s fall and the early developments taking shape in post-liberation Libya. Wright has also revised his text to reflect recent research. |

A Long View of Research and Practice in Operations Research and Management Science: The Past and the Future $159 From the Foreword by Marshall Fisher, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania:As generation of academics and practitioners follows generation, it is worthwhile to compile long views of the research and practice in the past to shed light on research and practice going forward. This collection of peer-reviewed articles is intended to provide such a long view. This book contains a collection of chapters written by leading scholars/practitioners who have continued their efforts in developing and/or implementing innovative OR/MS tools for solving real world problems. In this book, the contributors share their perspectives about the past, present and future of OR/MS theoretical development, solution tools, modeling approaches, and applications. Specifically, this book collects chapters that offer insights about the following topics:• Survey articles taking a long view over the past two or more decades to arrive at the present state of the art while outlining ideas for future research. Surveys focus on use of a particular OR/MS approach, e.g., mathematical programming(LP, MILP, etc.) and solution methods for particular family of application, e.g.,distribution system design, distribution planning system, health care.• Autobiographical or biographical accounts of how particular inventions (e.g.,Structured Modeling) were made. These could include personal experiences in early development of OR/MS and an overview of what has happened since.• Development of OR/MS mathematical tools (e.g., shastic programming, optimization theory).• Development of OR/MS in a particular industry sector such as global supply chain management.• Modeling systems for OR/MS and their development over time as well as speculation on future development (e.g., LINDO, LINGO, and What’sBest!)• New applications of OR/MS models (e.g., happiness)The target audience of this book is young researchers, |

A Professional Professoriate: Unionization, Bureaucratization, and the AAUP $2.99 Starting with the question “How have professors and educational institutions responded to pressures to be professional yet act bureaucratically,” Philo Hutcheson uses federal and AAUP records and surveys and blends historical research and sociological analysis to develop a full understanding of the problem. With the dramatic expansion of the professoriate following World War II came increasing tensions between the professor’s perceived traditional status as an autonomous professional on the one hand and new role as a bureaucrat subject to institutional authority and responsible for departmental and committee assignments on the other. In this increasingly conflicted realm, the AAUP functioned as a key intermediary, dealing with such issues as tenure, salary, contracts, and even faculty strikes. Hutcheson examines how tensions between the requirements of institutional bureaucracies and the norms of the academic profession resulted in contentiousness and conflict within the national AAUP, between administrators and faculty members on individual campuses, within the ranks of faculties themselves, and even deep in the consciences of many concerned individuals. The book analyzes the association’s ability to respond effectively and to balance the values of collegial representation with the powers of collective bargaining. It thus offers a detailed and authoritative examination of the AAUP’s search for ways to sustain professionalism while dealing with the fundamental changes in the nature of the professoriate in the post-World War II era. |

A Synthesized (Simplified) Process for Urban Transportation Planning $93.64 The main aim of this work was the definition of a transportation planning methodology that was synthesized and less expensive than the one presented by the traditional process, and, more than this, which could be done without household research. A superficial analysis of several works was conducted, and four of them were chosen for a more detailed analysis, which allowed to define the proposed methodology. The method is based on the determination of trip production and trip attraction once the number of houses, shops, offices, industries, etc. present in the area of study is known, as well as their respective characteristics, and transferable rates from other studies were used. It follows the four steps model, where the fundamental difference is that, because complete data were not available, once household OD surveys were not performed, several adjusting procedures were performed, to verify the degree of compatibility of the used transferred taxes. The work is limited to traffic assignment in the road network for the base year, and to the comparison with the observed flow, and it was verified that the process leads to an acceptable result. |

This is arguably the most comprehensive inquiry to date by a sociologist on the perception of time, its passage and duration.”–Barry Glassner, University of Southern California”A highly original and colorful book, filled with compelling, real life and fictional examples.”–Jack Katz, UCLA”Flaherty invites us to the fascinating world of the phenomenology of time. Particularly sensitive to the inherent tension between the standard and the idiosyncratic, he offers a cross-situational, generic analysis of the circumstances when there is a considerable discrepancy between clock time and our subjective experience of duration such that we feel that time is either compressed (“flies”) or protracted (“stands still”). His examination of such temporal anomalies draws on equally-compelling fictional and real first-person accounts. A case study of the digital divide: A study of teacher awareness and efforts to bridge the gap in underserved communities. $69 The purpose of this research was to examine the digital divide as it relates to teacher perceptions regarding the importance of narrowing the technology gap for low-income and minority students. This research was a replication of a study conducted by Wilson in 2002. The original study questioned whether teachers were aware of the term digital divide and how closely their definitions coincided with the review of literature. This present study sought to underscore the awareness levels of teachers regarding the problems associated with the digital divide and to bring their perceptions to light on a community-level basis. Descriptive statistics were used to illustrate teachers’ responses to survey questions. Out of the 41 surveys that were distributed, 21 teachers responded, many of whom were female. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to support the following conclusions: (a) most educators were unaware of the term digital divide, (b) all respondents agreed or strongly agreed that technology use in the classroom increased student motivation, (c) all respondents agreed or strongly agreed that technology enhanced learning, (d) few teachers at the school site reported using technology on a daily basis for instructional purposes, (e) most respondents agreed that guidance in how to integrate technology into daily lesson planning was needed, (f) most educators cited time constraints as being a large barrier to true technology integration in the curricula, and (g) many of those studied would have liked to have seen more technical support from the school district. The review of literature supported the idea that staff development plays an essential role in determining teacher performance within individual classrooms. Evidence points to the fact that without proper training and adequate support, teaching practices would fail to meet the technology needs of at-risk students, most of whom are minorities from economically impoverished neighborhoods. A comparison of a high and low-performing school in the Soroti Catholic Diocese, Uganda, East -Africa. $49.99 School effectiveness is a difficult construct to explain because of the many variables present in a given educational system. Even two schools with similar demographic profiles may have very different levels of success as measured by student outcomes, exit examinations, and graduation rates. What makes one school succeed while another with a similar profile is less than successful has been studied in developed countries. However, these same questions about school effectiveness exist in the developing world as well, yet little research has been undertaken to explain the reasons for school success or failure. This study utilized a mixed method constructivist approach to account for educational differences in two demographically similar schools in the Soroti Diocese of Uganda. Participant schools were selected through examination of quantitative and qualitative indicators of school success. Once selected, the key shareholders in each school (parents, staff, and students) were surveyed using the appropriate More Effective Schools (MES) surveys. Follow-up interviews were conducted with each group. The data from the MES surveys indicated that all seven correlates of Effective Schools were present at a statistically significant level in both study schools. However, further analysis of individual questions on the MES surveys, combined with the qualitative interview data, revealed significant differences between the two schools. Most of these differences focused on three key areas: instructional leadership, a clear school mission, and home-school relationships. Further research could include individual analysis of each of these three correlates. The comprehensive picture of each school provided by the study data allowed for specific recommendations for improvement at each study school, a primary goal of this research. The study also demonstrated the importance of a multi-faceted, mixed methodology approach to school effectiveness research; in short, multiple |

A comparison of the aptitude and attitude of college students toward social and technical computer technology. $49.99 The purpose of this study was to investigate college students’ technical and social technology competencies based upon their attitudes toward computers and their perception of technical computer knowledge. The participants for this investigation were college undergraduates majoring in apparel merchandising and design and other related and non-related majors at the University of Arkansas. The research model selected for use in this study was the survey design method. There were a total of 1270 students responding to the survey with 1052 usable surveys remaining after cleaning the data for missing entries. This constituted an 83% response rate. The findings included significant effects of social aptitude by age and major, and technical aptitude by major. Males had significantly higher perceptions of technical aptitude, and both social and technical attitude toward computer technology than females. Whites had significantly higher perceptions of social aptitude toward computer technology than Nonwhites. Class standing had no significant effect on college student’s perceptions of either aptitude or attitude in social or technical computer technology. There were strong correlations between social aptitude and technical aptitude and social attitude and technical attitude. Colleges and universities as well as industry are taking advantage of social technology not only for recruitment but in the classroom and on the job as well. A strong relationship between social and technical aptitude and social and technical attitude would tend to indicate that students are ready for this type of interaction. |

A correlational study of the Tennessee Formative Assessment Program (TFAP) to the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) on fifth grade reading/language arts. $69 The approach of high-stakes testing and accountability of student learning has resulted in an increase of ongoing assessments and continual instructional adjustments by teachers to achieve maximum student performance on standardized tests. According to Black and Wiliam (1998a), formative assessments can produce significant learning gains by offering specific feedback on desired learning targets and an understanding of specific steps to improve. To equip educators with data to drive instruction, many state departments of education across the United States have purchased formative assessment programs. Similarly, the Tennessee State Department of Education implemented a scientifically-based formative assessment program through the Princeton Review K-12 Services (The Princeton Review, 2005). The purpose of this study was to determine the predictability of fifth grade student proficiency on the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) Reading/Language Arts scores based on the Tennessee Formative Assessment Program (TFAP) Reading/Language Arts scores. The sample consisted of 375 student Tennessee Formative Assessment Program (TFAP) scores paralleled with their Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) tests scores. A multiple linear regression revealed that TFAP is a predictor of TCAP (R square value = .523). Secondly, 22 teachers completed a seven question survey on how TFAP data was utilized to adapt instruction. Teacher surveys revealed that 77.3% of educators vi used TFAP data to adapt classroom instruction. Finally, implications of the research and recommendations are discussed. |

A new tool to measure the relationship between health-related quality of life and workforce productivity. $49.99 Quality of life and productivity are two important measures in health outcomes that usually require the use of self-reported surveys for accurate assessment. Measuring health-related quality of life (HRQOL) has been established as an important field in the past century, and many psychometrically validated instruments exist for both general and specific population use. Another health measure that has attracted a significant amount of attention in recent years, although there is no gold standard, is that of workforce productivity. Most productivity studies measure the amount of work loss incurred by employees in the form of absenteeism and presenteeism.;A new survey that combines questions from existing HRQOL and workforce productivity surveys, the Health-Related Quality of Life and Work Productivity Questionnaire (HQWP), was constructed and tested using a descriptive, cross-sectional study of faculty and staff at a major research university. As expected, HRQOL and work loss were found to be negatively correlated. In addition, staff were found to have statistically higher levels of absenteeism than faculty, but faculty had higher levels of presenteeism. Using multivariate regression models on several measures of productivity, including both absenteeism and presenteeism, we concluded that mental health measures were stronger predictors of productivity than physical health measures for our overall sample, as well as faculty and staff groups separately. In addition, those who work extra hours to make up for lost production had significantly lower social function scores compared to those who do not. Other statistical analyses performed include PCA factor analyses on presenteeism covariates. Lastly, we performed economics analyses on the cost savings that could be achieved through health management programs to reduce absenteeism and presenteeism levels.;A better understanding of reasons for absenteeism and presenteeism could help inform targeted workplace programs to |

A study of the relationship of three social activities and an individual’s extrinsic career success. $69 Individuals are discovering that they are now operating in a business environment different then in the past. In order to achieve extrinsic career success in this new environment, employees are finding that they need to learn and implement nontraditional business skills. The purpose of this study was to investigate if there was a relationship between participating in certain social activities and achieving extrinsic career success through the use of nontraditional business skills. The specific activities reviewed were sporting activities, volunteer activities, and drinking activities. The nontraditional business skills identified in the study were the use of networking, mentoring, political skills, and social skills. This research was conducted using a quantitative study employing an online survey. The survey consisted of four-point Likert-style questions concluding with three open-ended questions. There were 114 usable surveys which provided the data for this research study. Frequency analysis, regression analysis, and the test of independent means were the different analyses used to analyze the survey responses. There were five primary conclusions drawn from this research study. Several conclusions centered around the small amount of time spent on the three social activities and their moderate impact on career success highlighting specific activities which were of more value. Several other findings focused on the moderate impact on career success of attending social activities with work colleagues and that if more time were spent attending these functions, and using nontraditional business skills, additional career benefits would be possible. The last finding was that adjusted R2 values were consistently generated during regression analysis, albeit with small values all below .10. As the sole determinant of career success, this is not a good predictor; however, as a compliment to traditional skills, this is an important finding. Participating in these activities |

A surrogate measure of customer satisfaction in the manufacture of Printed Wiring Boards. $108 The objective of this research is to determine and develop a model that is capable of accurately measuring customer satisfaction for different industries and in particularly for the Printed Wiring Boards (PWB) Manufacturers. The new model will incorporate data not being collected or utilized by the survey method of determining customer satisfaction.;The method used is a weighted average of satisfaction among several researched categories with percentages that accurately represent the relative importance of multiple facets of the PWB manufacturers customer satisfaction.;A very common term in quality assurance is that “What is not measured accurately can not be evaluated or managed correctly,” thus customer satisfaction is a very important aspect of any business, industry, or government. A satisfied customer will do more business and recommend it to other potential customers. Thus the business will grow and more revenues result. On the other hand, an unsatisfied customer will abandon the business and encourage more customers not to get involved with the same business so the business may decline and lose its market share and profitability. The categories that contribute to PWB customer satisfaction will be determined by conducting surveys among the leaders and best in the business of the PWB industry in addition to discovery of related articles that define the categories of the customer satisfaction for the PWB manufacturers.;Once the categories are determined, the research concentrates on the weighting of the categories that most contribute to the PWB customer’s satisfaction and a measure of satisfaction is derived. The model is easily applied to any other kind of PWB business or service industry.;The model is based on empirical methods that will give an accurate measurement for the PWB customer’s satisfaction. This in turn allows organizations the opportunity for improving customer satisfaction and increasing market share. The algorithm is based on characteristics |

A to Z of Ancient Israel $48.39 For these very reasons, because Ancient Israel means so much to us and because we actually know so little for sure, The A to Z of Ancient Israel is particularly important. It examines the usual sources in the Old Testament and surveys the findings of more recent archaeological research to help us determine just what happened and when, a far from simple task. It includes entries on most of the persons, places, and events which are generally considered, and shows more broadly what the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah were like and what role they played in the ancient world, but it also defines them as closely as possible according to the latest data. |

Adaptive Control of Nonsmooth Dynamic Systems $179 A complete reference to adaptive control of systems with nonsmooth nonlinearities such as:• backlash;• dead-zones;• component failure;• friction;• hysteresis;• saturation;• time delays. These nonlinearities in industrial actuators cause severe problems in the motion control of industrial processes, particularly in view of modern requirements for speed and precision of movement, such as occur in semiconductor manufacturing, precision machining and elsewhere. Actuator nonlinearities are ubiquitous in engineering practice and limit control system performance. While standard feedback control alone cannot handle these nonsmooth nonlinearities effectively, this book, with unified and systematic adaptive design methods developed in 16 chapters, shows how such nonlinear characteristics can be effectively compensated for by using adaptive and intelligent control techniques. This allows desired system performance to be achieved in the presence of uncertain nonlinearities. With extensive surveys of literature and comprehensive summaries of various design methods the contributors present new solutions to some important issues in adaptive control of systems with various sorts of nonsmooth nonlinearities. In addition to providing solutions, the book is also aimed at motivating more research activities in the important field of adaptive control of nonsmooth nonlinear industrial systems by formulating several challenging open problems in related areas. |

Adaptive Query Processing $208.23 Adaptive Query Processing surveys the fundamental issues, techniques, costs, and benefits of adaptive query processing. It begins with a broad overview of the field, identifying the dimensions of adaptive techniques. It then looks at the spectrum of approaches available to adapt query execution at runtime – primarily in a non-streaming context. The emphasis is on simplifying and abstracting the key concepts of each technique, rather than reproducing the full details available in the papers. The authors identify the strengths and limitations of the different techniques, demonstrate when they are most useful, and suggest possible avenues of future research. Adaptive Query Processing serves as a valuable reference for students of databases, providing a thorough survey of the area. Database researchers will benefit from a more complete point of view, including a number of approaches which they may not have focused on within the scope of their own research. |
