As you unclothe yourself, reflect that so must your soul at last, unclothed of its vesture of flesh, stand before God; pray that it may be with joy, and not with grief. Let your last words be — Into Thy hands I commend my spirit, for Thou hast redeemed me, O Lord Thou God of truth. MORNING HYMNS. I. Now that the daylight fills the sky, We lift our hearts to God on high, That He, in all we do or say, Would keep us free from harm to-day. May He restrain our tongues from strife, And shield from anger’s din our life ; And guard with watchful care our eyes From earth’s absorbing vanities. O may our inmost hearts be pure, From thoughts of folly kept secure, And pride of sinful flesh subdued Through sparing use of daily food. So we, when this day’s work is o’er, And shades of night return once more, Our path of trial safely trod, Shall give the glory to our God. All praise to God the Father be; All praise, Eternal Son, to Thee; Whom, with the Spirit, we adore For ever and for evermore. Amen. Awake, my soul, and with the sun Thy daily stage of duty run; Shake off dull sloth, and early rise To pay thy morning sacrifice. Redeem thy mis-spent time that’s past, And live this day as if thy last: Improve thy talent with due care, For the great day thyself prepare. Let all thy converse be sincere, Thy conscience as the noon-day clear ; Think how all-seeing God thy ways And all thy secret thoughts surveys. Wake and lift up thyself, my heart, And with the Angels bear thy part, Who all night long u… |

An assessment of the relationship between culturally specific coping methods and occupational stress for Black male counselor educators: Implications for increased diversity in CACREP accredited programs. $49.99 The absence of Black male counselor educators in CACREP accredited programs is astounding. Out of a pool of 130 CACREP programs, only 31 have at least one Black male full time counselor educator. Although these programs are comprised of approximately 2,000 counselor educators, only 58 of them are Black men. This poses a serious problem for CACREP accredited institutions as it indicates the standards for maintaining a diverse faculty are not being met. It is important that more studies regarding specific coping methods be explored to help meet CACREP standards.;Black male counselor educators experience racism, tokenism, feeling left out, not being respected, and unfair pay in addition to rigorous faculty duties (Allison, 2008; Holcomb-McCoy & Bradley, 2006; Salazaar, 2005; Heggins, 2004). Specific coping methods must be employed to combat these specific strains. To that end, the purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the relationship between culturally specific coping methods and occupational strain for Black male counselor educators in CACREP accredited programs.;This exploration was initiated through two web surveys: (1) The Black Cultural Coping Scale (BCCS), and (2) The Occupational Strain Inventory — Revised. The BCCS was designed to explore the degree to which culturally specific coping was employed. The OSI-R explored the level of generic occupational stress Black men experienced. Results from BCCS respondents (N=44, 75% response rate) indicated Black men employ culturally specific coping with a significant high degree of frequency. OSI-R results (N=44, 75% response rate) indicated Black men experience a moderate level of occupational strain.;A correlation matrix was created comparing the relationship between BCCS and OSI-R variables. There were very few strong relationships between the variables of the two scales. This lack of relationship suggests that Black men may utilize culturally specific coping methods for culturally specific strain, |

Canals In Massachusetts $20.03 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Cape Cod Canal, Middlesex Canal, Hampshire and Hampden Canal, Holyoke Canal System, Blackstone Canal, Pawtucket Canal, Lechmere Canal, Madaket Ditch, Broad Brook Canal, List of Canals in Massachusetts, Salem Beverly Waterway Canal, Broad Canal, Merrimack Canal. Excerpt: The Cape Cod Canal is an artificial waterway traversing the narrow neck of land that joins Cape Cod to mainland Massachusetts. Part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, the canal is roughly 17.4 miles (28 km) long (approximately 7 miles, or 11.3 km, of which are cut through land) and connects Cape Cod Bay in the north to Buzzards Bay in the south. The 540-foot (164.6 meter) width of the canal is spanned by the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge and two highway bridgesthe Bourne and the Sagamore. Traffic lights govern the approach of vessels over 65 feet (19.8 m), and are located at either end of the canal. The Massachusetts Maritime Academy is located on Taylors Point at the south entrance of the canal. The idea of constructing such a canal was first considered by Miles Standish of the Plymouth Colony in 1623, and Pilgrims scouted the low-lying stretch of land between the Manomet and the Scusset rivers for potential routes. William Bradford established the trading post of Aptuxcet in 1627 at the portage between the rivers. Trade with the Native Americans of Narragansett Bay and the Dutch of New Netherlands prospered and was a major factor enabling the Pilgrims to pay off their indebtedness. In 1697 the General Court of Massachusetts considered the first formal proposal to build the canal, but apparently took no action. More energetic planning with surveys took place repeatedly in 1776 (by George Washington), 1791, 1803, 1818, 18241830, and 1860. None of these efforts came to fru… More: |

Discover the Wealth Within You: A Financial Plan For Creating a Rich and Fulfilling Life $10.99 Chapter OneDoes the Cabbie KnowWhere You Want to Go?Have you ever gotten into a cab but refused to tell the driver where you want to go? Of course not. The whole point of hailing a cab is to have the driver help you get to your destination. You tell him your goal, and the cabbie both develops the plan for getting you there and implements it for you.Financial planning operates the same way. Thus, if you don’t have goals, the planning effort is as pointless as asking a cabbie to drive you around town, with no destination in mind.I bet you can tell me what surveys reveal are the top three reasons people save money. They are:To buy a homeTo pay for collegeTo afford a comfortable retirementIf you were to expand this list, you could add:wedding costscapital expenses, such as a carcelebrations, such as a couple’s 50th anniversaryvacationsmajor medical expenseselder care costsand, ultimately, leaving your money to your kids and/or other heirs. Each of the aboveis a common reason why people save and invest. Each requires or constitutes a set of goals. And when combined, each fits into an overall financial plan. But one thing bothers me about this entire list. And I imagine it bothers you, too. You know what the problem |

Illinois Waterways $19.99 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Illinois and Michigan Canal, Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park, Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, Illinois Waterway, Chicago Portage. Excerpt: Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Hennepin canal was first conceived in 1834 as a connection between the Illinois and Mississippi River, but financial problems in the state delayed many public works projects. Pressure for transportation that was cheaper than rail convinced Congress to authorize preliminary surveys on the project in 1871. Construction began in 1892 and the first boat went through in 1907, reducing the distance from Chicago to Rock Island by 419 miles (674 km). While the canal was under construction, however, the Corps of Engineers undertook a widening of the locks on both the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. The new locks on those rivers were twenty and forty feet wider than the canal locks, making them obsolete before their initial use. In the 1930s the Hennepin Canal was used primarily for recreational traffic. The Hennepin Canal, which at one time was known as the Illinois and Mississippi Canal, was open to boat traffic until 1951 at no cost. Ice made from the canal’s frozen waters was sold during the winters to help pay the canal’s maintenance costs. The Hennepin was the first American canal built of concrete without stone cut facings. Although the Hennepin enjoyed only limited success as a waterway, engineering innovations used in its construction were a bonus to the construction industry. The canal was used as a training ground for engineers that later worked on the Panama Canal. Both the Hennepin and Panama Canals used concrete lock chambers and both used a feeder canal from a man made lake to water the canals because both needed water to f… More: |

Jimmy Stewart is Dead: Ending the World’s Ongoing Financial Plague with Limited Purpose Banking $27.95 Make no mistake, Jimmy Stewart, the honest, trustworthy banker (a.k.a. George Bailey) in It’s a Wonderful Life, is dead. And so is his small-town, virtuous bank—Bailey Savings and Loan. Today, a very different financial movie, It’s a Horrible Mess, is playing on Main Street. This economic horror show—produced by Wall Street and directed by Congress—is no Christmas story, but a tale of pervasive and massive financial malfeasance that has devastated the lives of millions of people around the globe.Though our financial system lies in tatters and economic misery stalks the land, the horrible mess is far from over. Uncle Sam, who aided and abetted the financial fraud, is working overtime to restore a financial system that’s virtually designed for hucksters, that no one can trust, and that towers on a bed of sand.Uncle Sam’s strategy is Wall Street’s—borrow short, place risky bets, make financial commitments you can’t possibly keep, and let no one see precisely what you’re doing. The sums involved are enormous and have leveraged us and our children far beyond our capacity to pay. Sam’s bluff has put our economy at grave economic risk. Without the right financial fix, the global financial plague will strike again with even more devastating force.Written by Laurence Kotlikoff—one of the world’s most respected economists—Jimmy Stewart Is Dead describes in lively, but deadly serious terms the big con underlying the big game: namely the web of interconnected financial, political, and regulatory misconduct that culminated in financial meltdown and brought us to our economic knees. It’s a tragic story that starts with our economic disaster and where it’s headed, describes its causes, identifies its architects, and then shows how to fix the system for good.Throughout the book, Kotlikoff not only surveys the disheartening events surrounding our economic collapse, but also conveys their deeper economic |

Journalism: State of the Art $30.38 A necessity for the professional journalist’s library, Journalism: State of the Art will prove a valuable resource for the student journalist as well. This book summarizes some 200 media studies many from the most prestigious journal in the trade, Journalism Quarterly. In a paraphrased-synthesis format, and using informal terms, the author arranges some of the most interesting studies of the 1980s into eight subject headings including: Ethics Law, and the Journalist; Advertising in the 1980s; Polling and Precision Journalism; and Predictors of Readership and Viewship. For many years there has been a gap between media researchers and the practicing journalist. Published research about journalism as a discipline may receive attention in the classroom but seldom gets in the newsroom. Viewing the gap between the researcher and practitioner, Willis offers comments from both sides. He surveys nearly 150 news executives on media research and gives an insightful look at what factors cause readers or viewers to pay attention to the news media. From trends in the industry to types of audiences, Journalism: State of the Art uses practical research studies presented in an accessible style. Offering the most current data available on media research, this book will prove a great instructional as well as reference tool. It is a must for college journalists, working press, and media marketers. |

Labeling Genetically Modified Food: The Philosophical and Legal Debate $70 Food products with genetically modified (GM) ingredients are common, yet many consumers are unaware of this. When polled, consumers say that they want to know whether their food contains GM ingredients, just as many want to know whether their food is natural or organic. Informing consumers is a major motivation for labeling. But labeling need not be mandatory. Consumers who want GM-free products will pay a premium to support voluntary labeling. Why do consumers want to know about GM ingredients? GM foods are tested to ensure safety and have been on the market for more than a decade. Still, many consumers, including some with food allergies, want to be cautious. Also, GM crops may affect neighboring plants through pollen drift. Despite tests for environmental impact, some consumers may worry that GM crops will adversely effect the environment. The study of risk and its management raises questions not settled by the life sciences alone. This book surveys various labeling policies and the cases for them. It is the first comprehensive, interdisciplinary treatment of the debate about labeling genetically modified food. The contributors include philosophers, bioethicists, food and agricultural scientists, attorneys/legal scholars, and economists. |

Medifocus Guidebook on: Complementary Cancer Therapies $19.5 The MediFocus Guidebook on Complementary Cancer Therapies is the most comprehensive, up-to-date source of information available. You will get answers to your questions, including alternative treatment options, leading doctors, hospitals and medical centers that specialize in Complementary Cancer Therapies, results of the latest clinical trials, support groups and additional resources, and promising new treatments on the horizon. This one of a kind Guidebook offers answers to your critical health questions including the latest treatments, clinical trials, and expert research; high quality, professional level information you can trust and understand culled from the latest peer-reviewed journals; and a unique resource to find leading experts, institutions, and support organizations including contact information and hyperlinks.Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) may be defined as a broad range of medical systems, philosophies, and therapies that are not considered as part of conventional, mainstream medicine. The use of CAM therapies has increased dramatically since the 1990s. For example, it has been estimated that in 1997 Americans spent between $40 billion to $50 billion on CAM therapies with nearly 35% of these expenditures coming directly from out-of-pocket costs borne by patients that were not covered by health insurance policies. This data indicates that more and more Americans are using CAM therapies and are willing to pay directly for the costs associated with these services.Complementary and alternative therapies are also commonly used by cancer patients throughout the world, including cancer patients in modern Western countries such as Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Data from published surveys of cancer patients in 13 countries, including several surveys conducted in the United States, indicated that nearly one of every three cancer patients (31%) have used some form of CAM. On The White Pass Pay-Roll $18.85 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:CHAPTER II CONSTRUCTION OF FIRST SECTION When our Surveyors reached Skaguay in May, 1898, they were dumped ashore, like everybody else, on a gravel flat, which filled the narrow valley between two snow-clad mountain ranges towering six or seven thousand feet above their heads. The gravel flat was called Skaguay and already overcrowded with human beings living under the conditions described in the previous chapter. Our men with difficulty found room to pitch their tents and establish themselves. All they had to do was to find the best way through those mountains to Lake Bennett, and to find it “quick.” Except the trail, the entire country was a wilderness of steep mountains, averaging higher than Mont Blanc does above the surrounding valley levels. The sides of these mountains were so thickly timbered to the snow line with small spruce that half a mile an hour was good progress for an active man, and of course no levels could be run or preliminary surveys made without clearing the line of sight. The densest ignorance prevailed as to the topography of the country. People knew where the White Pass was, and that was all. (Some of them didn’t know this and strayed into “False Pass.”) The relations of the mountains to one another in a range or where the waters in the streams had their source, no one knew or cared. Yet our men had not only to find a way through this 40 miles of mountain wilderness for our locomotives, but it was important to find the best way, and to find it “mighty sudden.” Fivesurveying parties took to the hills and vanished for weeks, and in the end we had five complete surveys covering both sides of the Skaguay River and of the White Pass as far as the Summit. The distance as the crow flies is only 14 miles from the Summit to the sea, but making the most |

Predictive Species and Habitat Modeling in Landscape Ecology: Concepts and Applications $149.08 Much research in landscape ecology makes use of spatial models to define species-habitat associations. The early years of landscape ecology necessarily focused on the evolution of effective data sources, metrics, and statistical approaches that could truly capture the spatial and temporal patterns and processes of interest. Now that these tools are well established, we reflect in this volume on the ecological theories that underpin the assumptions commonly made during species distribution modeling and mapping. This is crucial for applying models to questions of global sustainability. This book will offer a unique perspective on modeling within the discipline of landscape ecology, which complements that of other recent publications. Through chapters that focus on particular aspects of modeling, illustrative case studies, and surveys of the field of modeling, this book illustrates that we can (and need to) pay attention to the foundational ecological theories and assumptions which support model development. We show how this can be done in modeling through theory, traditional inference, and predictions. Chapter authors have attempted to critically identify, evaluate, and even formally test these ecological theories and have also written thoughtful reflections on the state of landscape-scale species/habitat modeling. Predictive Species and Habitat Modeling in Landscape Ecology: Concepts and Applications is intended to be useful to researchers in landscape ecology, as well as those in conservation biology, wildlife management, population and community ecology, and general ecology. The book will be a valuable resource for graduate students incorporating landscape ecology and/or species modeling in their degree programs.About the EditorsC. Ashton Drew is a postdoctoral researcher in the USGS North Carolina Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, North Carolina State University. Premarital Sex in America: How Young Americans Meet, Mate, and Think about Marrying $14.16 The period of young adulthood, from ages 18 to 23, is popularly considered the most sexualized in life. But is it true? What do we really know about the sexual lives of young people today?Premarital Sex in America combines illuminating personal stories and comprehensive research surveys to provide the fullest portrait of heterosexuality among young adults ever produced. Mark Regnerus and Jeremy Uecker draw upon a wealth of survey data as well as scores of in-depth interviews with young adults from around the country, both in and out of college. Digging underneath stereotypes and unexamined assumptions, the authors offer compelling–and often surprising–answers to such questions as: How do the emotional aspects of sexual relations differ between young men and women? What role do political orientations play in their sexual relations? How have online dating and social networking sites affected the relationships of emerging adults? Why are young people today waiting so much longer to marry? How prevalent are nontraditional forms of sex, and what do people think of them? To better understand what drives the sexual behaviors of emerging adults, Regnerus and Uecker pay special attention to two important concepts: sexual scripts, the unwritten and often unconscious rules that guide sexual behavior and attitudes; and sexual economics, a theory which suggests that the relative scarcity of men on college campuses contributes to the “hookup” culture by allowing men to diminish their level of commitment and thereby lower the “price” they have to “pay” for sex. For anyone wishing to understand how sexual relations between young adults have changed and are changing, Premarital Sex in America will serve as a touchstone for years to come. |

Smoke-Filled Rooms: A Postmortem on the Tobacco Deal $27.5 The 1998 out-of-court settlements of litigation by the states against the cigarette industry totaled $243 billion, making it the largest payoff ever in our civil justice system. Two key questions drove the lawsuits and the attendant settlement: Do smokers understand the risks of smoking? And does smoking impose net financial costs on the states? With Smoke-Filled Rooms,W. Kip Viscusi provides unexpected answers to these questions, drawing on an impressive range of data on several topics central to the smoking policy debate. Based on surveys of smokers in the United States and Spain, for instance, he demonstrates that smokers actually overestimate the dangers of smoking, indicating that they are well aware of the risks involved in their choice to smoke. And while smoking does increase medical costs to the states, Viscusi finds that these costs are more than financially balanced by the premature mortality of smokers, which reduces their demands on state pension and health programs, so that, on average, smoking either pays for itself or generates revenues for the states.Viscusi’s eye-opening assessment of the tobacco lawsuits also includes policy recommendations that could frame these debates in a more productive way, such as his suggestion that the FDA should develop a rating system for cigarettes and other tobacco products based on their relative safety, thus providing an incentive for tobacco manufacturers to compete among themselves to produce safer cigarettes. Viscusi’s hard look at the facts of smoking and its costs runs against conventional thinking. But it is also necessary for an informed and realistic debate about the legal, financial, and social consequences of the tobacco lawsuits.People making $50,000 or more pay .08 percent of their income in cigarette taxes, but people with incomes of less than $10,000 pay 1.62 percenttwenty times as much. Social Causes of Psychological Distress $47.12 A core interest of social science is the study of stratification–inequalities in income, power, and prestige. Few persons would care about such inequalities if the poor, powerless, and despised were as happy and fulfilled as the wealthy, powerful, and admired. Social research often springs from humanistic empathy and concern as much as from scholarly and scientific curiosity. An economist might observe that black Americans are disproportionately poor, and investigate racial differences in education, employment, and occupation that account for disproportionate poverty. A table comparing additional income blacks and whites can expect for each additional year of education is thus as interesting in its own right as any dinosaur bone or photo of Saturn. However, something more than curiosity underscores our interest in the table. Racial differences in status and income are a problem in the human sense. Inequality in misery makes social and economic inequality personally meaningful. There are two ways social scientists avoid advocacy in addressing issues of social stratification. The first way is to resist projecting personal beliefs, values, and responses as much as possible, while recognizing that the attempt is never fully successful. The second way is by giving the values of the subjects an expression in the research design. Typically, this takes the form of opinion or attitude surveys. Researchers ask respondents to rate the seriousness of crimes, the appropriateness of a punishment for a crime, the prestige of occupations, the fair pay for a job, or the largest amount of money a family can earn and not be poor, and so on. The aggregate judgments, and variations in judgments, representthe values of the subjects and not those of the researcher. They are objective facts with causes and consequences of interest in their own right. This work is an effort to move methodology closer to human concerns without sacrificing the scientific grounds of research as such. The auth |

Social Research In Developing Countries $61.95 This paperback edition of an established text aims to deliver key information on social research methods in developing countries. It deals with the particular problems of carrying out social surveys and censuses in the Third World, which differ significantly from research in Western Europe or North America.; This book makes the difference clear, particularly in the areas of research design, sampling, data collection and the social context of research. The contributors are social scientists from a range of disciplines in 12 countries, all with firsthand practical experience of research in Asia, Africa or Latin America. They provide a guide to the pitfalls and possiblities of empirical research and pay attention to methodological marriages and to ethical and political problems. The formulation and implementation of policies for development depends on information as much as on social ideals or political objectives. This volume offers an account of social research methods and practice which facilitate the effective collection and productive use of accurate information.; The book is designed to appeal to students and teachers in development studies, sociology, economics, geography, political science and social statistics, and in applied fields such as planning, agricultural economics, education, health, housing and social welfare. It is also aimed at research workers in government, academic institutes and the voluntary sector in the Third World. |

Soul Searching: The Religious and Spiritual Lives of American Teenagers $17.95 In innumerable discussions and activities dedicated to better understanding and helping teenagers, one aspect of teenage life is curiously overlooked. Very few such efforts pay serious attention to the role of religion and spirituality in the lives of American adolescents. But many teenagers are very involved in religion. Surveys reveal that 35% attend religious services weekly and another 15% attend at least monthly. 60% say that religious faith is important in their lives. 40% report that they pray daily. 25% say that they have been “born again.” Teenagers feel good about the congregations they belong to. Some say that faith provides them with guidance and resources for knowing how to live well. What is going on in the religious and spiritual lives of American teenagers? What do they actually believe? What religious practices do they engage in? Do they expect to remain loyal to the faith of their parents? Or are they abandoning traditional religious institutions in search of a new, more authentic “spirituality”? This book attempts to answer these and related questions as definitively as possible. It reports the findings of The National Study of Youth and Religion, the largest and most detailed such study ever undertaken. The NYSR conducted a nationwide telephone survey of teens and significant caregivers, as well as nearly 300 in-depth face-to-face interviews with a sample of the population that was surveyed. The results show that religion and spirituality are indeed very significant in the lives of many American teenagers. Among many other discoveries, they find that teenagers are far more influenced by the religious beliefs and practices of their parents and caregivers than commonly thought. They refute the conventional wisdom that teens are “spiritual but not religious.” And they confirm that greater religiosity is significantly associated with more positive adolescent life outcomes. This eagerly-awaited volume not only provides an unprecedented |

The Ways of Religion: An Introduction to the Major Traditions $14.33 Revised and updated, the third edition of this highly acclaimed anthology surveys all the major religious traditions–Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and African religions–and also covers Zen Buddhism, Shinto, and the religious experience in America. Ideal for courses in world religions and comparative religion, it introduces the unique claims, hopes, and wisdom of each tradition in its own voice, through substantial excerpts from its scriptures, prophets, and authors. “I have tried to pay heed,” Eastman writes in his Preface, “to A. C. Bouquet’s warning of many years ago that the study of religion may sink to the level of collecting dead insects or pressed flowers, which in the process lose all their color and reality. There is not much excuse for a dreary book about a subject as inherently interesting and provocative as the world’s religions.” The following selections are new to the third edition: Diana L. Eck’s “Frontiers of Encounter,” Barbara Stoler Miller on Yoga, R. K. Narayan’s story “Chudala,” Julia Ching’s “Confucianism in Perspective,” Thomas Merton on Chuang Tzu, Joseph M. Kitagawa’s “The Way of the Kami,” Ian Reader on Shinto, Vincent Mulago on African Religions, and “A Personal Note” by John Hick. |

Using Surveys To Value Public Goods $52.95 Economists and others have long believed that by balancing the costs of such public goods as air quality and wilderness areas against their benefits, informed policy choices can be made. But the problem of putting a dollar value on cleaner air or water and other goods not sold in the marketplace has been a major stumbling block. Mitchell and Carson, for reasons presented in this book, argue that at this time the contingent valuation (CV) method offers the most promising approach for determining public willingness to pay for many public goods—-an approach likely to succeed, if used carefully, where other methods may fail. The result of ten years of research by the authors aimed at assessing how surveys might best be used to value public goods validly and reliably, this book makes a major contribution to what constitutes best practice in CV surveys. Mitchell and Carson begin by introducing the contingent valuation method, describing how it works and the nature of the benefits it can be used to measure, comparing it to other methods for measuring benefits, and examining the data-gathering technique on which it is based—-survey research. Placing contingent valuation in the larger context of welfare theory, the authors examine how the CV method impels a deeper understanding of willingness-to-pay versus willingness-to-accept compensation measures, the possibility of existence values for public goods, the role of uncertainty in benefit valuation, and the question of whether a consumer goods market or a political goods market (referenda) should be emulated. In developing a CV methodology, the authors deal with issues of broader significance to survey research. Their model of respondent error is relevant to current efforts to frame a theory of response behavior and bias typology will interest those considering the cognitive aspects of answering survey questions. Mitchell and Carson conclude that the contingent valuation method can obtain valid valuation |

What Happened to Art Criticism? $12.95 Art criticism was once passionate, polemical, and judgmental; now critics are more often interested in ambiguity, neutrality, and nuanced description. And while art criticism is ubiquitous in newspapers, magazines, and exhibition brochures, it is also virtually absent from academic writing. How is it that even as criticism drifts away from academia, it becomes more academic? How is it that sifting through a countless array of colorful periodicals and catalogs makes criticism seem to slip even further from our grasp? In this pamphlet, James Elkins surveys the last fifty years of art criticism, proposing some interesting explanations for these startling changes. In What Happened to Art Criticism?, art historian James Elkins sounds the alarm about the perilous state of that craft, which he believes is ‘In worldwide crisis . . . dissolving into the background clutter of ephemeral cultural criticism’ even as more and more people are doing it. ‘It’s dying, but it’s everywhere . . . massively produced, and massively ignored.’ Those who pay attention to other sorts of criticism may recognize the problems Elkins describes: ‘Local judgments are preferred to wider ones, and recently judgments themselves have even come to seem inappropriate. In their place critics proffer informal opinions or transitory thoughts, and they shy from strong commitments.’ What he’d like to see more of: ambitious judgment, reflection about judgment itself, and ‘criticism important enough to count as history, and vice versa.’ Amen to that. –Jennifer Howard, Washington Post Book World |

Workers in a Lean World: Unions in the International Economy $5.08 Used – This is a comprehensive study of current labour relations worldwide. It surveys both sides of the picket lines, and provides an assessment of multinational managements’ strategies to downsize, introduce flexible production and compel workers to accept less pay for more work. The book argues that despite frequent h |
