Excerpt: The Mercurius Caledonius – Comprising The Affairs now in Agitation in Scotland With A Survey of Forraign Intelligence , founded in Edinburgh in 1660 by the playwright Thomas Sydserf , the son of the Bishop of Galloway , was Scotland’s first newspaper. Only 12 editions were published during 1660 and 1661. References (URLs online) See also (online edition) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at The Ready and Easy Way to Establish a Free Commonwealth was published by John Milton at the end of February 1660. In the tract , Milton warns against the dangers inherent in a monarchical form of government . A second edition, published March 1660, steps up the prophetic rhetoric against a monarchy. Background The 1650s took their toll on Milton, and he was already in a declining state, beginning with his wife dying during the birth of their third daughter and their son dying later in that year. As the years progressed, his blindness overtook him and he was alone. Matters were further complicated for Milton by the death of Cromwell in 1658 and the end of the English Commonwealth . The work was a final plea to try to stop the restoration of a monarchy while Milton promoted the establishment of a Republic . However, this resulted only in his being ignored and mocked. Milton began writing a pamphlet during early February of 1660 while the Rump Parliament was in session with the support of General George Monck . It seemed certain that Monck would put forth a republican form of government that Milton supported but various complications divided Monck from the Parliament during this time. On 21 February, Monck forced Parliament to readmit members that were purged in December 1648 and it seemed certain that the Commonwealth would stay in power. The tract was written in order to persuade |

Excerpt: Allentown, Pennsylvania – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The area that is today the center of Allentown was laid out as Northampton Town in 1762 by William Allen, a wealthy shipping merchant, former mayor of the city of Philadelphia and then-Chief Justice of the Province of Pennsylvania. The property was part of a 5,000-acre (20 km) plot Allen purchased on September 10, 1735 from his business partner Joseph Turner, who was assigned the warrant to the land by Thomas Penn, son of William Penn, on May 18, 1732. The tract was originally surveyed on November 23, 1736. A subsequent survey done in 1753 by David Schultz for a road from Easton to Reading, of which present-day Union and Jackson streets were links, shows the location of log house owned by Allen, situated near the western bank of the Jordan Creek, which was believed to have been built around 1740. Used primarily as a hunting and fishing lodge, here Allen entertained prominent guests including his brother-in-law, James Hamilton, and colonial governor John Penn. The original plan for the town, now in the archives of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, comprised forty-two city blocks and consisted of 756 lots, mostly 60 feet (18 m) in width and 230 feet (70 m) in depth. The town was located between present-day Fourth and Tenth Streets, and Union and Liberty Streets. Many streets on the original plan were named for Allen’s children: Margaret (present-day Fifth Street), William (now Sixth), James (now Eighth), Ann (now Ninth) and John (now Walnut). Allen Street (now Seventh) was named for Allen himself, and was the main thoroughfare. Hamilton Street was named for James Hamilton. Gordon Street was named for Sir Patrick Gordon, Deputy Governor of Colonial Pennsylvania from 1726-1736. Chew… More: |

Excerpt: Events Arts and literature Births Full date unknown Deaths A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at In 1749 a large-scale census and statistical investigation was conducted in the Crown of Castile (15.000 places including Galicia and Andalusia, but not including the Basque provinces , Navarre or the Crown of Aragon ). It included population, territorial properties, buildings, cattle, offices, all kinds of revenue and trades, and even geographical information from each place. It was encouraged by king Fernando VI of Spain and his minister the Marquis of Ensenada , and is known today as the Catastro of Ensenada .The general answers of each place to the 40 questions of the Catastro produced a huge volume of documentation that affords historians an opportunity to analyze the economy, the society, the practices of the señorío system (manorialism ) and environmental data from 18th-century Spain. It is the best statistical register of the pre-statistical age of the Ancien Régime in Europe.Today the word catastro means “register of the properties”, but the etymology comes from “enquire”. In the 18th century there was a distinction between a catastro , which was made by central officers who traveled to the places to enquire, and the amillaramiento , which was made by local authorities. The single tax The Catastro originated in a proposal for a single tax (única contribución ), studied by 16 members of the Council of Castile , the Hacienda (Treasury ), the Indies (America), the Military Orders , five intendentes (first provincial authorities) and the head of the Barcelona Court. After receiving the negative opinion of Councils and the positive opinion of the intendentes , the king saw fit to begin the survey in the interest of the Crown and the |

Excerpt: The Cape Ann Earthquake took place off the coast of the British Province of Massachusetts Bay (the present-day American state of Massachusetts ) on November 18, 1755. At between 6.0 and 6.3 on the Richter scale , it remains the largest earthquake in the history of Massachusetts. It damaged hundreds of buildings in Boston and was felt as far north as Nova Scotia and as far south as South Carolina . Sailors on a ship more than 200 miles (322 km) offshore felt the quake, and mistook it at first for their ship running aground. Many residents of Boston and the surrounding areas attributed the quake to God, and it occasioned a brief increase in religious fervor in the city. Modern studies estimate that if a similar quake shook Boston today, it would result in as much as $5 billion in damage and hundreds of deaths.Epicenter The earthquake took place on November 18, 1755, at approximately 4:30 AM. Its epicenter is believed to have been offshore, approximately 24 miles (39 km) east of Cape Ann . The quake was felt as far north as Halifax , Nova Scotia , south to the Chesapeake Bay and South Carolina , and from Lake George and Lake Champlain in the northwest to a ship 200 miles (322 km) off the east coast. Sailors on the ship reported that the quake was so strong, they had feared that they had run aground. The region experienced a number of aftershocks , the first of which was a little more than an hour after the quake. Most of these aftershocks could not be felt in Boston, affecting only the northeastern coast of the colony. Modern research has estimated that the quake was between 6.0 and 6.3 on the Richter scale , and the United States Geological Survey calls it the largest earthquake in the history of Massachusetts. Scientists are unclear on the causes of this and other quakes in |

In July of that year she took part in a fleet review celebrating the coronation of King George IV of the United Kingdom in which she was the first ship to sail under the new London Bridge. After that there was no immediate need for Beagle so she “lay in ordinary”, moored afloat but without masts or rigging. She was then adapted as a survey barque and took part in three expeditions. On the second survey voyage the young naturalist Charles Darwin was on board, and his work would eventually make the Beagle one of the most famous ships in history. On 27 September 1825 Beagle docked at Woolwich for repairs and fitted out for her new duties at a total cost of £5,913. Her guns |

Excerpt: Carl Meissner ‘s taxonomic arrangement of Banksia was published in 1856, as part of his chapter on the Proteaceae in A. P. de Candolle ‘s Prodromus systematis naturalis regni vegetabilis . It was the first attempt to provide an infrageneric classification for the genus, aside from Robert Brown ‘s publication of two subgenera in 1810. Meissner’s arrangement stood until 1870, when it was superseded by the arrangement of George Bentham . Meissner’s arrangement was an excellent survey of the known species at that time, but his infrageneric taxa were all highly heterogeneous. Background Banksia and Taxonomy of Banksia Banksia is a genus of around 80 species in the plant family Proteaceae . An iconic Australian wildflower and popular garden plant , they are recognised by their flower spikes or domes, and their fruiting “cones”. They grow in forms varying from prostrate woody shrubs to trees up to 35 metres tall, and occur in all but the most arid areas of Australia. As heavy producers of nectar , they are important sources of food for nectariferous animals such as honeyeaters and honey possum , and they are of economic importance to the nursery and cut flower industries. However they are seriously threatened by a number of processes including land clearing, frequent burning, and disease, and a number of species are rare and endangered .Specimens of Banksia were first collected by Sir Joseph Banks and Dr Daniel |

From May 2, 1992, the Serbs blockaded the city. The Bosnian government defence forces inside the besieged city were poorly equipped and unable to break the siege. Paris also hosts many international organizations such as UNESCO, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the informal Paris Club. According to the latest survey from Economist Intelligence Unit in 2010, Paris is the world’s most expensive city to live in. Paris is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.
