Arkansas State University Faculty: Phyllis Morse $10 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Phyllis Morse (Anderson) (b. 1934) is an American archaeologist. When she started at the University of Michigan to study Anthropology in 1953 she embarked on a lifetime immersed in archaeology by profession and marriage. Her expertise lay in the laboratory, where she worked with materials from prehistoric sites across America. In addition to her own work, she worked on many sites and papers with her husband Dan F. Morse, whom she married in 1960, raising three sons. Her love of antiques led her to open a business in 1979 which she still operates, having retired from academic life in 1997. Anderson was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1934, and attended Crystal Lake Community High, Crystal Lake, Illinois, graduating in June 1952. She became interested in archaeology while studying anthropology at the University of Michigan. In the 1950s there were fewer women at University, let alone any who chose that discipline. She received a BA in anthropology (with distinction) in June 1956, an MA in anthropology in June 1958 and a PhD in May 1959, all from Michigan. Anderson was to meet her future husband, Dan F. Morse because she was not allowed to be the sole woman in the field. She was, however, permitted to be the lab assistant for the Etowah site excavations in 1958 with Dan. They were recruited by Dr. James B. Griffin, their mentor at Michigan and the excavation was led by Lewis Larsen. As a married couple with both doing archaeology at a high level throughout their careers, the Morses are nearly unique in the field of archaeology. Together, often with their three sons on the digs, they worked in many parts of the southeastern US. They spent thirty years in northeast Arkansas (1967-1997) at the Arkansas Archeological Surveys Arkansas State University… More: |

Ruth originally broke into the major leagues with the Boston Red Sox as a starting pitcher , but after he was sold to the New York Yankees in 1919, he converted to a full-time right fielder and subsequently became one of the league’s most prolific hitters. Ruth was a mainstay in the Yankees’ lineup that won seven pennants and four World Series titles during his tenure with the team. After a short stint with the Boston Braves in 1935, Ruth retired. In 1936, Ruth became one of the first five players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame . Ruth has since become regarded as one of the greatest sports heroes in American culture . He has been named the greatest baseball player in history in various surveys and rankings, and his home run hitting prowess and charismatic personality made him a larger than life figure in the “Roaring Twenties “. Off the field he was famous for his charity, but also was noted for his often reckless lifestyle. Ruth is credited with changing baseball itself. The popularity of the game exploded in the 1920s, largely due to his influence. Ruth ushered in the “live-ball era “, as his big swing led to escalating home run totals that not only excited fans, but helped |

Chapters: Cape Cod Canal, Middlesex Canal, Hampshire and Hampden Canal, Holyoke Canal System, Blackstone Canal, Pawtucket Canal, Lechmere Canal, Madaket Ditch, Broad Brook Canal, List of Canals in Massachusetts, Salem Beverly Waterway Canal, Broad Canal, Merrimack Canal. Excerpt: The Cape Cod Canal is an artificial waterway traversing the narrow neck of land that joins Cape Cod to mainland Massachusetts. Part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, the canal is roughly 17.4 miles (28 km) long (approximately 7 miles, or 11.3 km, of which are cut through land) and connects Cape Cod Bay in the north to Buzzards Bay in the south. The 540-foot (164.6 meter) width of the canal is spanned by the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge and two highway bridgesthe Bourne and the Sagamore. Traffic lights govern the approach of vessels over 65 feet (19.8 m), and are located at either end of the canal. The Massachusetts Maritime Academy is located on Taylors Point at the south entrance of the canal. The idea of constructing such a canal was first considered by Miles Standish of the Plymouth Colony in 1623, and Pilgrims scouted the low-lying stretch of land between the Manomet and the Scusset rivers for potential routes. William Bradford established the trading post of Aptuxcet in 1627 at the portage between the rivers. Trade with the Native Americans of Narragansett Bay and the Dutch of New Netherlands prospered and was a major factor enabling the Pilgrims to pay off their indebtedness. In 1697 the General Court of Massachusetts considered the first formal proposal to build the canal, but apparently took no action. More energetic planning with surveys took place repeatedly in 1776 (by George Washington), 1791, 1803, 1818, 18241830, and 1860. None of these efforts came to fru… More: |

Coal Mines In Lancashire $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Lancashire Coal Field was the most prolific in England, the number of shafts sunk to gain coal number several thousand, for example, in 1958, Wigan undertook a survey of old shafts and located 500. In 1980 following several years of redevelopment in the town, the list had grown to 1700 with no real idea of the total. Similar surveys in Bolton and Manchester have also produced long lists of undocumented shafts. The proliferation of mines was a result of the Industrial Revolution and the climate which was ideal for cotton mills. The coal was needed to feed the ever hungry boilers of the cotton mill towns of Ashton-under-Lyne, Blackburn, Bolton, Burnley, Bury, Darwen, Oldham and Rochdale as well as the Rossendale Valley. The first industrial revolution coal mines supplied coal to Liverpool, along the River Mersey via the Sankey Canal, which was the first canal of the Industrial Revolution era. In the Manchester area, the first Industrial Revolution coal mines were those of the Duke of Bridgewater in Worsley, where the Bridgewater Canal was built to transport coal from his mines to Manchester. Lancashire miners used terms in different ways to other coal mining areas, a mine in Lancashire refers to a coal seam, so a reference to the Doe Mine actually refers to the Doe seam. The term pit was used for the shaft that was sunk to the mine and the term colliery was used to describe the whole of the surface area including the headgear, wash-houses, offices, trams etc. An example of this would be: Garswood Hall Colliery consisting of 3 pits: the number 9, the number 2 and the number 3 working the Ravin, Orrell 4 Foot and Arley mines. In 1880, the Mines Inspector reported 534 coal pits in the Lancashire field, as of 2007, only two pits were still wo… More: |

Corruption In China $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The People’s Republic of China suffers from widespread corruption. For 2008, China was ranked 72 of 179 countries in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index. Means of corruption include graft, bribery, embezzlement, backdoor deals, nepotism, patronage, and statistical falsification. Cadre corruption in post-1949 China lies in the “organizational involution” of the ruling party, including the regime’s policies, institutions, norms, and failure to adapt to a changing environment in the post-Mao era. Like other socialist economies that have gone through monumental transition, post-Mao China has experienced unprecedented levels of corruption, making the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) “one of the most corrupt organisations the world has ever witnessed,” according to Will Hutton. Public surveys on the mainland since the late 1980s have shown that it is among the top concerns of the general public. According to Yan Sun, Associate Professor of Political Science at the City University of New York, it was corruption, rather than democracy as such, that lay at the root of the social dissatisfaction that led to the Tiananmen protest movement of 1989. Corruption undermines the legitimacy of the CCP, adds to economic inequality, undermines the environment, and fuels social unrest. Since then, corruption has not slowed down as a result of greater economic freedom, but instead has grown more entrenched and severe in its character and scope. In popular perception, there are more dishonest CCP officials than honest ones, a reversal of the views held in the first decade of reform of the 1980s. China specialist Minxin Pei argues that failure to contain widespread corruption is among the most serious threats to China’s future economic an… More: |

Not illustrated. Excerpt: Oil shale in Jordan represents significant potential resource. Oil shale deposits underlie more than 60% of Jordanian territory, and are estimated at 40 to 70 billion tonnes of oil shale. The deposits include a high quality marinite oil shale of Late Cretaceous to early Tertiary age. The most important and investigated deposits are located in west-central Jordan, where they occur at the surface and close to developed infrastructure. Although oil shale was utilized in northern Jordan prior to and during World War I, intensive exploration and studies of Jordan’s oil shale resource potential started in the 1970s and 1980s, being motivated by higher oil prices, modern technology and better economic potential. As of 2008, no oil shale industry exists in Jordan, but several companies are considering both shale oil extraction and oil shale combustion for thermal power generation. Jordan has significant oil shale deposits occurring in 26 known localities. Geological surveys indicate that the existing deposits underlie more than 60% of Jordan’s territory. The resource consists of 40 to 70 billion tonnes of oil shale, which may be equivalent to more than 5 million tonnes of shale oil. The Jordanian oil shale is a marinite of Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) to early Tertiary age; it lies within the Muwaqqar Formation and is composed predominantly of chalk and marl. The rock is typically brown, gray, or black in color and weathers to a distinctive light bluish-gray. It is characterized by its content of light fine-grained phosphatic xenocrysts, some of which is accumulated in bone beds. An uncommon feature of Jordanian oil shale is that the included foraminiferal shells are filled with bitumen instead of the usual calcite. In general J… More: |

Excerpt: The Lion Salt Works is the last remaining open pan saltworks in Cheshire, England. It closed as a works in 1986 and is now preserved as a museum. The works is situated in Marston, near Northwich (grid reference SJ670754). John Thompson Junior, a member of a family which had been making salt probably since the 18th century, started the Lion Salt Works when he built a salt pan in the coal yard of the Red Lion Hotel, Marston in 1894. During the 20th century more efficient methods of extracting and refining salt were developed and by 1960 the works was the only business continuing to use the open pan process in the country. The business closed down in 1986 when the West African markets, the major purchaser of natural salt, were lost because of the Nigerian Civil War. Salt VanThe buildings were purchased by Vale Royal District Council to prevent their demolition. In 1993 the Lion Salt Works Trust was formed as a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. In 2000 a survey showed that the land around the works was stable and during the following years money was raised from DEFRA, English Heritage, Cheshire Rural Recovery and the Northwest Development Agency to enable surveys to be completed and a conservation plan to be written. In July 2005 an application was made to the Heritage Lottery Fund and a Stage 1 award was made the following March. In March 2008 it was announced that the Heritage Lottery Fund had made an award of £4.96m towards the £7m total cost of the restoration project. Illinois Waterways $19.99 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Illinois and Michigan Canal, Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park, Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, Illinois Waterway, Chicago Portage. Excerpt: Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Hennepin canal was first conceived in 1834 as a connection between the Illinois and Mississippi River, but financial problems in the state delayed many public works projects. Pressure for transportation that was cheaper than rail convinced Congress to authorize preliminary surveys on the project in 1871. Construction began in 1892 and the first boat went through in 1907, reducing the distance from Chicago to Rock Island by 419 miles (674 km). While the canal was under construction, however, the Corps of Engineers undertook a widening of the locks on both the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. The new locks on those rivers were twenty and forty feet wider than the canal locks, making them obsolete before their initial use. In the 1930s the Hennepin Canal was used primarily for recreational traffic. The Hennepin Canal, which at one time was known as the Illinois and Mississippi Canal, was open to boat traffic until 1951 at no cost. Ice made from the canal’s frozen waters was sold during the winters to help pay the canal’s maintenance costs. The Hennepin was the first American canal built of concrete without stone cut facings. Although the Hennepin enjoyed only limited success as a waterway, engineering innovations used in its construction were a bonus to the construction industry. The canal was used as a training ground for engineers that later worked on the Panama Canal. Both the Hennepin and Panama Canals used concrete lock chambers and both used a feeder canal from a man made lake to water the canals because both needed water to f… More: |

Islands Of India $19.99 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: New Moore / South Talpatti – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The island was situated only 2 kilometers from the mouth of the Hariabhanga River. The emergence of the island was discovered by an American satellite in 1974 that showed the island to have an area of 2,500 sq meters (27,000 sq ft). Later, various remote sensing surveys showed that the island had expanded gradually to an area of about 10,000 sq meters (110,000 sq ft) at low tide, including a number of ordinarily submerged shoals. The island at low tide was, at most, about 3.5 km in length and 3 km in width. The highest elevation of the island never exceeded two meters above sea level. The island was located in the coastal, shallow Bay of Bengal immediately south of the international border river, the Hariabhanga, flowing between Satkhira district of Bangladesh and the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, India. Co-ordinates are 21°3700N 89°0830E. It is now under the waves of the Bay of Bengal. The island was claimed by both Bangladesh and India, although neither country established any permanent settlement there because of the island’s geological instability based on silt deposits in a delta which floods every year. India had reportedly hoisted the Indian flag on the island in 1981 and established a temporary base of Border Security Forces (BSF), regularly visiting with naval gunships. According to the Radcliffe Award (establishing the East Pakistan and India boundary in 1947), the ‘mid-channel flow’ principle or Thalweg doctrine is generally recognized as the international boundary on river borders between the two countries. The middle line of the mid-channel flow (Thalweg) of the Hariabhanga River established the original boundary between the states. Had the island not di… More: |
